Landon Donovan is retiring at end of MLS season. He said he enjoyed the Wellington game. Convince him to come out on a guest stint as a final low key hurah while subversively convincing him to stay for rest of season.

Do a reverse Hingert and poach Thurtell while he's still on trial with Brisbane.

You miss the point entirely. The point is that Ernie doesn't want another striker, for whatever reason.

There you go angst about that some more.

Presuming that we get the youth +3 spots and some kind of reserve team who could we sign of Aussies and kiwis who could be an extra striker? The +3 don't count towards salary cap correct? So we could free up somewhere between 120-150k? Is there anyone good we can get on those dollars? Anyone off contract from other clubs?

It'll free up some salary cap but we still have to have 3 youth players in the 23 man squad. Currently we have 4 youth players (Fenton, Boyd, Ridenton & Rufer) so the +3 spots would have to be 2 youth players, leaving room for 1 extra senior player.

Another thing to be asked is are Welnix keen to fork out the extra wages for the 3 youth spots? Because I don't think FFA would cover them.

I don't think that is necessarily true. Earlier in the off season there was talk of signing a striker, that dried up and we ended up signing midfielders. Ernie seems fairly happy with that result but I don't think our lack of an international striker was necessarily for a lack of trying.

Ernie has said that he will sit with the squad he has for 5 weeks or or so and see what he needs, if this trend of missed opportunities in pre-season continues Ernie will know what he needs and be wanting to sign a solution.

Presuming the more pessimistic of us are correct then this will be the case and presuming either that we get these +3 spots and free up some cap space or somehow don't get McGlicnchy and free up more then we would be in the market for an Aussie or Kiwi striker.

In spite of the fact that we have a full squad Ernie is still considering making additions which suggests that one of those two are possibilities. So seeing as this is transfer speculation I was wondering if anyone had any possible targets besides maybe Watson to speculate on?

I mean given one of the above circumstances is there anyone we could sign who would actually improve our strike force?

Edit: Also I don't recall Ernie saying that he didn't want another striker, I think he said that our search for striker was over, presumably because we missed our targets.

I guess when you look at who is up front now and whom is available:

From an NZ point of view, Brockie and Boyd are up top already whom are AWs (or fringe) and not really 'strikers'. Kosta is much the same and settled in Melbourne, Wood is not coming back and Smeltz signed in Sydney and his missus has him under the thumb. The only Kiwi striker options that would potentially have an impact would be Kris Bright whom I really do not rate or everyones favourite god botherer Rory Fallon. Those are probably the only realistic striker options that would be worth signing. You can sign Hamish Watson, but is he going to be an upgrade on whats there or score the goals that are not being scored right now? When you think about the level he is at, he is the not the player you sign to solve the problem, he just fills a squad place. When you look at Rory and Kris, and evaluate those options for what they are, then there really is not a Kiwi option.

It would need to be an Australian.

Good strikers aren't exactly thick on the ground and, even if there are any options, they are very unlikely to be Kiwis. So, unless something bizarre happens, we're stuck with what we've got. I'm sure Ernie is aware of the situation and will hopefully tailor our style of play to accomodate that. As for Rory Fallon? I'd rather we signed his Dad. He'd be just as useless, but at least he'd give us a few laughs and something to talk about.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Hamish Watson offers:  ability to hold the ball, beast-like strength, great in the air.  I'd sign him but then I'm heinously biased.....

Against Upper Hutt he was playing in a #10 role. Ernie just doesn't seem to want an out and out striker for our set up, so can't see us signing another striker even if we get the +3 spots.

I don't think it is correct that Ernie does not want an out an out striker. He did mention he was looking for one earlier in the year when he went to Europe. However the reality is that why would any half decent striker want to come to the arse end of the world to play for a club that had finished bottom and 2nd bottom of the A-League two years in a row?

Every pro club on the planet wants a decent striker.....we would be near the bottom of the pile. Marseille's big summer recruitment was a 21 year old Belgium kid from Liege. The OM fans all went..."who's he????"  the OM manager replied that that is the nature of the global market. There are now plenty of Middle eastern and Asian clubs with cash to hoover up anyone who can put the ball into the back of the net.

The  problem we have is that we have recruited Krishna as an import striker and he does not get played much. We all know what Brockie can do...or can't do yet Ernie keeps starting him. I would like to see Krishna get  starts in preseason so we can see what he's got. The guy is a natural goal scorer at ASB Prem level......we need to find out if he can do it consistently for the Nix as well

he does alright with the website at the moment while at the same time trying to get $1200 worth of viewing out of sky. So doubt trying to get his money's worth for $150 will affect the website too much.

I suppose the question is: if no McGlinchey then who else can we try to sign? It would have to be a New Zealander/Australian although theoretically we would have coin to chuck at them. At least winger is a position where we have plenty of depth so we wouldn't need to replace McGlinchey like for like.
