If he is making our squad better, and increasing the chances of us finishing the season higher up the table we should be welcoming him with open arms.

Some of us - apparently naively - thought there was some truth in "Same old aussies - always cheating".

But no, looks like we're lowering ourselves to the ranks of the cheats too.

It's understandable to hack at an opposition player in a moment of red mist, but to attack a match official is assault and he should have been sent to jail.

1) a) Racist b) Untrue c) People from all countries cheat
2) What cheating has Griffiths done that a Phoenix player hasn't?
3) a) Why is it understandable to hack a player who annoys you but not a referee? b) No, no one gets imprisoned for a one-off sack-tap.

1) Er, race has nothing to do with it. Australians are a different nationality, not race.

b/c) Has NZ done anything as bad as the underarm incident?

NZers may cheat as well but we don't condone it. Remember the disapproval from the croud when Daniel used to dive in 2007 - season 1. He cut that out of his game.

2) See my example above.

3) a) Because in sport, you are fighting against the opposition. The referee is neutral. And the referee doesn't lunge in with a nasty tackle.

b) OK, that was hyperbolic of me ...

Pro sport is unscripted theatre and Griffiths is the archetypal villain. Saying you'll stop going to games because of him is a bit melodramatic though. We just need to stop looking at him as a bad guy and start looking at him as our bad guy. This is the necessary evil of wanting success - a Faustian pact with Beelzebub in exchange for future glory.... some of our fans are too afraid of the darkness to accept this development.

My other beef would be that he feels like a Ricki signing, not an Ernie signing.

Y'know, proven A-league player, past his best, discarded by another team.

Appiah was more of an Ernie signing.

And it's particularly weird given that Ernie's been saying how our search for a striker was over since before the season started,

We currently have all 5 visa slots filled. Can someone explain to me how we can now sign Griffiths? I was under the impression that Aussies were a visa slot for the Nix?

Nope, neither Aussies nor kiwis count as imports for the Nix

It's our one advantage we get both Kiwi's and Ausies as non visa. Everyone else only has Ausies as non  visa.

The way I think it is, he's a gap fill.  We have lost Brockie and Boyd is not getting played.

When we release one of our imports at end of season, and presuming he can find what he wants on the market, he'll be replacing Griffiths with a longer term import signing.

I cant believe the reaction by some people to this both here and elsewhere.Dont get me wrong im not that happy with it as he isnt one of my favorite players. But if he scores the goal that confirms our place in the finals or scores a goal that takes us to the next round of the finals you bet i will be cheering loudly.End of the day its about the TEAM not individuals and Ernie is a  better situated to decide whats right over this and Boyd.

Ricki signed his fair share of young, discarded Aussies - Troy, Pav, (a different) Griffiths, Tsatallios, Downey etc.

He also made a lot of good signings, so not sure why it's bad for Ernie to pick a similar player if he feels he can contribute. Kind of weird to say one of Ernie's signings doesn't feel like an Ernie signing.

You know we belong together...

Wellington United jokes aside I find it a little strange that people curse the signing of a player like Griffiths when we have the likes of Muscat and Siggy in our side already. Those two have had their fair trot of run ins with opposition and refs but they are both highly competitive and effective professionals. Both would be quite unpopular with other clubs' fans but are very good players in this league. If Ernie thinks he can get something out of a proven player like Griffiths why is it such a bad signing? Particularly given the relatively low risk signing that it is...

Fuck this stupid game

My theory is that Moosecat and Siggie are seen as aggressive and competitive - if they get into trouble it is in the context of an overzealous tackle that had to be made at the time. In contrast Griffiths is seen (in my theory) as a player with a careless streak, and more of a "loose cannon" prone to do a stupid unnecessary thing when none was called for just to wind up the opposition.   Others may disagree.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Manny and Siggie have slogged their guts out for us in many a legitimate situation, being the last line of defence, and scored a few winners. They have worked hard for coach and team, and are physical defenders.

Griffiths has been a petulant Twit who punch a lino in the nuts and kicks out when something doesn't go his way.

I'm looking forward to the Joel Griffiths signing being completed. He offers us something diffrent up front and if hes at the Nix I'll be supporting him.

There is also the allegation that I've seen bandied around by a few folks across the Tasman that Mr Griffiths is someone who has a bit of a knack of being a disruptive influence in the dressing room. Don't know whether that's true or not. Don't really care.

I'm not particularly happy we've signed him, but I can see and understand why we have. Once he pulls a stripey over his ugly, whining head he'll get my support, albeit grudgingly. Bottom line is that he's a Nix player so, whether we like it or not, WE have to deal with it.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Yes, but Brockie wanted to go to South Africa, we didn't actively shop him around to try to get him out of the squad.

Me, from 25 February 2015: Nutcracker ..... Sweeeeet!

Historical histrionics aside, I think he could do a job for us.  I welcome the variations he offers.  Good signing.

ok, this pisses me off. Strikers should never wear a shirt number below 7, in much the same way defenders should never wear numbers between 7 and 11 and no player should ever wear a shirt with a number over 50.

Eto'o at Everton wearing 5, Gallas at Arsenal wearing 10, El Shaarawy at Milan wearing 92 - fudge off the lot of you.
