Why do people think we play 4-2-3-1?

We more often played 4-2-2-2 with the box midfield last year. The only time we seemed to play 4-2-3-1 was with Brocks spearheading the line.

I think most of the season it was a slightly lopsided 4-4-2 diamond, or a slightly llopsided 4-2-2-2 box midfield (maybe a parallelogram? Is that right word?). Basically Riera stayed back at all times and WeeMac stayed forward all the time, while A-Rod/Lia mostly stayed  back and Roly mostly stayed forward. We also played a 4-2-3-1 with the Griff a couple of times

I don't think the parallelogram is our best formation. We should move to a pentagram.

The 2-3-1 in a 4-2-3-1 is kind of a pentagram. Or were you thinking an inversed one might suit us better?

Finger four formation.. Works a treat.

Inversed pentagram. But struggling to see how we would fit Jeffrey into that.

Bad idea. Carry on.

On the other hand, our current setup doesn't really utilise crosses well, so maybe a fresh approach is needed

Our senior defenders just let in 5 goals., friendly or not. Can we please have a good youthful centre back ?

While I love Ernies optimism unless there is some strengthening at the back I really fear just how many we are going to leak. If he is relying on the young guys then he and some of you guys are expecting some dramatic improvements from what has been shown so far. Big difference from the odd 10/20 minute good display pre season to turning it on week in week out in the league.

I expect us to make at least one, hopefully 2 (or more) significant defensive signings before the start of the season.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Okay, wild arse conjecture here...

I was thinking about defensive players you might consider from the ASB Prem. The only one I thought could make it was Ross Haviland from Hawkes Bay. I thought he looked better than most when I saw him vs Team Wellington last year. Agressive(!) and fairly quick.

Perhaps Andy Boyens. Still got some skills, but to be honest he looked a bit slow.

I don't think it will happen (as I think we would have had trials by now) but in the absence of any speculation happening I thought I would chuck it out there.

I'd be happy with a good CB and a good FB*.

Why can't we get Brindel-South back?

I always thought whenever he played he put in a solid shift

Roar just lost Brattan because of unpaid Super, so might be a few more players hitting the market soon.

He would be perfect. We want someone who is young enough to take over leading the backline when Durante leaves.

Have heard a lot of reports that he's slow, though - so wouldn't be an upgrade on Siggy/Dura presumably. Still, would be good to have backup.

Not any slower than what we have. At very least deserves a go.

Eager is worth a look.  Really composed on the ball...suits Ernies style... I think we had the Eager debate at exactly this time last year (a time when we had boxall and Loius was not marked Fragile)

With the arbitrator's decision on Brattan, effectively meaning all the roars players that are owed money are free agents, does that mean other clubs are free to approach them? And how ethical would it be? Could Donachie be approached now?

The player has to submit a notice to the club citing contract breaches, the club then has 14 days to fix it or it goes to arbitration and they declare you a free agent.

Im sure if there is interest in Donachie, his agent will know this and get him to submit the notice.

He's the new Clapham.

Quite possibly but the new rule changes makes it much less of a risk of grabbing someone from the Aussie state leagues now.

I had a bit of a look at off-contract Australian or Kiwi defenders on transfermarkt. It's pretty slim pickings, especially if you want to keep an eye on the future and sign someone under 30: Taylor Regan, Sam Gallagher, Jesse Edge, Brent Griffiths, Reece Caira....

Aside from Eagar and Adams, are there any state league or ASBP defenders who look like they've got the goods?

ASBP players dont qualify for the Mature Age Rookie spot. You have to be playing in Aussie.

I was thinking more just as a regular squad member - we've still got a couple of spaces on our roster don't we?

I didn't know Taylor Regan was a free agent. You'd think he'd be an okay squaddie - possibly not the long term answer for us at CB though. Remember pace was an issue.

Was Member's player of the year (or something like that) for the Jest last year.

That's the problem we now have - we are barrel scraping for a CB.

Is Eager the new Clapham? I guess you can say yes if you are being objective. The thing with Clapham though was that he talked loudly about looking for a pro gig and has not got one where as Eager has not. There was a story that the Phoenix wanted to trial him but he didn't want to get his ass to Wellington. He expected to be signed from Christchurch while he was hosted What Now and not go through the effort of trialing. Not sure if thats true but that seemed to be the story at the time.

So can we get a list of every player that has actually left the team?

Burns

Boyd

Brockie & Grffiths

Boxall

Who have I missed?
