I'm of the mind that if A-Rod does not fit into our First 11 consistently, we need to let him go.

A-Rod is fine, he is ready to be a better Lia, they both do massive work in the midfield, the unnoticed dirty work.

Who should replace them?

I don't disagree that he's better than Lia, but not sure Ernie thinks so. Perhaps it just depends on the game. I haven't seen anything to make me think that Ernie actually trusts him, especially with Riera gone.

110% off to tardsville, and you know what, sweet, Kosta is better than Marco now so there is nothing to fear as long as we get more defense in place.

I don't know if Melbourne will work out quite the same for Marco without Archie there to humbly feed him....

Yeah he has signed a 2 year deal with Victory according to Facebook, phoenix tried to get him and Merrick not happy they didn't.

Im happy about this.

Whomever made the point that Kosta is now better, is correct.

You don't want all this cash sitting on the bench when you've got weakness across the back, just silly.

Plus if he plays well, then one more AW we wouldn'tt have during the breaks. If he doesn't play well enough to make the AWs then we wouldn't want him anyway.

If we consistently let in goals because of holes in our backline then we won't score as many either.

Our real weak spots (RB, possibly CB, on a bad day LB) would not be fixed by better attackers alone. Quality of service would still be an issue (distracted midfield constantly having to plug holes, lack of support from the besieged defence, etc).

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

With squad size limited and a salary cap though it isn't as simple as signing any player who will improve your team. We already have Kosta and Krishna in the sort of role Marco would play and they're among our best players. On top of that, it's not entirely obvious how we fit those two plus WeeMac, Gui, Roly, and A-Rod all on the pitch at once already, let alone if we added Marco to the mix. Meanwhile we only have one specialist fullback. I'd rather we kept our hypothetical Rojas money in our wallet to entice the best possible options we can find at fullback, especially RB, rather than adding another small attacker and starting the season with a jerry-rigged back line.

In the book 'The Numbers Game: Why Everything You Know About Football Is Wrong' they found:

"that football is a “weakest-link game” – although it’s nice to have great players in your team, it’s more important not to have rubbish players. Games are typically decided not by the Wayne Rooneys but by oafs such as Zurab Khizanishvili, a defender whose blunders in a play-off in 2011 arguably cost Reading promotion to the Premier League.

Anderson and Sally crunch some of the new data on individual players to estimate that upgrading your weakest link typically improves your team more than buying a new superstar would. Despite this, managers, being human and wanting to please fans and journalists, usually prefer the superstar."

http://www.newstatesman.com/culture/2013/06/how-sp...

So we should get more benefit upgrading our weakest positions than upgrading Roy or Kosta with Marco

Interesting stuff. Anyone read that book? Makes complete sense and underpins the need to find a RB pronto. Great post.

has Ernie actually said he intends to use A Rod or Lia to cover the DM role Albert played? I thought he said he was trying to recruit into that spot.

Albert screened the back four well and made up for Durantes  major lack of pace. Lia's lack of wheels were highlighted in the FFA cup game for all to see so he isn't an option. A Rod is more of an 8 than a 6.

So I'll add a FM to the RB and General Nutcase (ie mr versatile).

Dissapointed De Vries wasn't picked up having seen park house highlight reel (if ou can call it that).

Ernie's seen him live and obviously he offers something a little different. I'd guess fullback cover and a left peg at minimum dollars.

Have you considered maybe that DeVries was asked and said no? Better offers, doesn't want to live in Welly?

De Vries doesnt qualify as a mature aged rookie (assuming we use that salary cap option for Parkhouse)

Random speculation but what about James Holland for the DM role? Currently without a club

De Vries would not be an import, because he (I think) has passport/citizenship in NZ.

But De Vries and NZ is just one huge clusterfudge from whichever way you look at it.

Good call. Well worth a look. You'd hope that someone from the club would be trying to talk to him.

Take him 100%. Sure he's not as good as he was 2 years ago, but we're not in a position to be turning down Australian defenders, especially ones with pedigree like his

Also might be good for our young fullbacks to have an experienced pro in their position in the squad to share his experience and knowledge of the role

Would be an absolutely fantastic pick up, honestly. May not be the quickest anymore, but having a FB that can actually defend would be great.

Terek Grozny

After playing for the Grozny (top club in Chechnya) it might be less than exciting for him to play in good ol' Wellington, although late Saturday night antics in Courtenay Place can sometimes be eeringly similar to the late night action in Grozny

The lack of millitary checkpoints everywhere as well metal detectors and sniffer dogs will be quite convenient in Wellington. I haven't been to Chchnya but i've been close and it's a severe pain in the ass (less of a pain than being kidnapped by terrorists or blown up by a suicide bomber though).

Bentdner tried to get hi self a contract at QPR the other day and after his speach Jimmy Floyd reputedly said to his face that he was a cock. Nheard this from a guy whose wife works at the club and was present. Hthe Nix could always try for Junior Toilett err Hoilett but do we need another winger, striker?

I saw Wilshire in taxi driving into town. He was on the phone and as far my lip reading goes I think he told someone Phoenix, training and Saturday. He looked extremely very fit for his age.
