I don't get it, its just a plot of grass - most of which will still be there, but with a great facility accompanying it.

If they were against it on the basis of disturbing local residents because of noise, traffic etc then I'd understand.

But this just seems like typical NZ being against something for the sake of it.

People having opposing views. Fair enough. It is over to Gaz and co to convince them of the benefits and explain how issues such as parking traffic ets will be mitigated.

I suspect every third Petone household owns a cat. Unfortunately.

All depends what the plans are around parking. Something needs to be done and that remaining green space must look inviting to the designers.

But if they weren't planning on touching that, and it really was left green to be used as it is now, then what's the problem?

The stadium's basically an enhancement isn't it?

Similar in some ways to the Fraser Park situation in Lower Hutt - there's quite a large fenced off main pitch area with a stand there where Avalon premiers and other sides play. What's to stop Petone premiers playing in the new stadium with one stand open?

Great place for premier club football, rugby and rugby league finals too.

In regards to parking, from what I've read it seems there is a real lack in the area. I think Welnix should consider constructing a parking building somewhere nearby considering proximity to Weltec and Jackson St. This would help parking in the area and game nights but also add a revenue stream during the rest of the week also.

I would suggest right in the middle of a field somewhere just to really give the locals what for.

Not a bad idea...I'm led to believe the money westpac make from their car park is quite crucial for their running costs.

Fuck this stupid game

Don't wanna be the dampener but free parking for work in petone is not an issue for most... not sure a parking building would be sustainable if it needs to be filled during the working week

We never use the carpark as $30 is a major pain. But we have used it for most games this season as $10 is reasonable.

Because it only cost $30K to hire the stadium?

lol

we should chip in and hire it for a YF kickabout and p*ssup

Assume topleft was referring to westpac hiring out the stadium carpark during the day. At $9 each (last I checked) it's easily the cheapest all-day parking in the city and always sells out. I can imagine that being a pretty substantial revenue earner.

I can understand that people don't like the Phoenix Arena in the front of their yard, it could be worse, I grew up close to a nuclear power plant, someone has to bite the bullet.

I seriously dont even think it's that bad. This isn't a very tall stadium and the only houses right alongside the planned stadium site are on the western side - behind the existing stand.

There is a small street on the southern side that has an entrance at the end of it - those people would be the most affected I would think, but they are already on a main thoroughfare for the existing fields and weltec.

The eastern side is Weltec, with some houses to the north end of it, but they are alongside the fields that will stay.

Interested to hear what HN and other Petonites think about the surrounding resident impact. I don't think it's much at all.

I for one wouldn't mind my house backing on to something like this. That is if I owned a house...

I'm guessing the concerns are more about the noise and the lights for night games, which obviously affects a wider area. But of course there'll be plenty of people opposed to it just because they think they should be

I live about two blocks away. Obviously I'm massively in favour, but if I put myself in the shoes of my non-football-mad neighbours I can imagine them having some reservations.

Which is why I think it's really important we (Fever) do our best to engage reasonably with those concerns.

I'm going to head along to the NIMBY meeting on Monday night just to listen.

A few peeps (*looks in the direction of Surge*) have been trolling their Facebook group and I don't think that does us any favours at all.

I'm curious. What size are A-League fields? And how big would the playing surface need to be at any new stadium to accommodate other possible sports?

A number of UK grounds are shared between League and Football but they tend to have small in goals for League. Stands at the ends may have to be a little further away than the sidelines.

How far is the back of the net from the goal line? That's deep enough for the eggballers to put the ball down. :-)
Screaming fans only a couple of meters from the goalie...now that's a football specific stadium!

Some of the locals felt they got a bit shafted when Weltec underwent expansion a couple of years ago. Weltec were allowed to count street parking for their increased numbers in residential streets that already seemed tight on parking. HCC have also developed a reputation for allowing developers to steamroll over local residents concerns lately and this could provoke some backlash. The are other arguments ongoing in Lower Hutt too, such as around the demolition of the old council building.
That said I haven't heard much yet apart from seeing the Facebook page. So I am not yet sure what the general public feeling is.

I wouldn't say I've been trolling exactly. To quote another Smith, in one instance... "that's a bit harsh" (and I did remove that post which could be considered that. But as someone who also lives two blocks away I deserve a say too. But meh - I'm off on holiday this week so hug your favourite nimby for me.

One of the LTTE in the DomPost on Sat was from ppl who opposed the carpark rezoning and yes, they're a bit shitted (understandably), another couple were from people I know - who don't live near the Rec yet the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Hence my "trolling" as to who exactly is behind the Bookface page and, what the agenda is for Mondays meeting. Not unreasonable I wouldn't have thought. Of course others disagree and good on them.

Thought you were talking about the Tamil Tigers for a moment. Thought it was odd they would have an opinion on carpark rezoning in Petone.
