Dear 'Nix fans,

AFC President Mohammed bin Hamman just had an interview on the SBS World Game show, and he was asked what the A-League needed to do in terms of becoming more professional (to meet the AFC Pro-League criteria).

He advised two things:

1) Promotion/Relegation system.

2) To remove the New Zealand presence from the A-League by 2011.

If the FFA has to make the decision between AFC Champions League and Wellington Phoenix, I dont think it will be a hard one for them to make.

Not good news for the 'Nix and their license.

Phoenix won't be removed, he just advised it plus we are one of the more better run teams around.

The a-league won't go Promotion/Relegation. So nothing to worry about.

This is also a reason why we won't be getting into AFC anytime soon, looks like they hate us. Can't wait till we best them in the World cup playoff game...wellyphoenixfan2008-11-16 19:52:03

Watched the interview and overnight SBS normally load the TWG stuff might take some finding ... but he was fairly clear ...... No NZ team if you want extra places.

Big Big call and lots of work needed on your side of the ditch ......... my suggestion for what its worth as I did not see this coming ..... is you become an Australian team playing out of Wellington rather than a N Z team playing in the A-League.

Wait whats the difference between a NZ team playing in the A-league and a aussie team playing in Wellington?

I don't see how that would 'make the A-league more professional'

I'm guessing small but important things. For example Kiwi players would be classed as imports.

We have every right to play in the A - League, the reason they gave the licence to us was because they WANTED the NZ presence in the A - League

If the Nix had to play in the NZFC we would win hands down - seeing as we beat the champs of the NZFC 7 - 0 with our 2nd team it would be unprofitable to play there. What an an arrogant thing to say from that man.

I also think Australia had an obligation to leave oceania in a good state when they moved into Asia, and they did this by giving NZ and A-league licence

I think if he did try to eliminate the Nix from the A-League there would be a 6,729 person strong protest outside his office!!!

That mongrel.  I thought all Asians bar Pol Pot, Hussein, and bin Laden were nice enough - I was clearly wrong.

I hope he has some reasons because we are more professional a franchise than half the other teams and we are by no stretch of the imagination a detriment to the league.  If he's concerned about the quality he should get rid of Perth.

Maybe if you guys win the league before 2011 the FFA will change their minds? Portillo2008-11-16 20:46:14

The only way to have promotion/relegation (with more than a miserable 8 teams per division) would be to give NZ more teams.  Otherwise the Australian talent will be stretched so much it'll still be above the NZFC (obviously) but far below the current league.

Which is exactly what Tony P has argued before that we are - we are franchise holders of an australian league team that happen to be based in NZ.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

Guys do not  buy into this as it will never happen.

I will seek clarification from FFA as to what actually was said.

In terms of Fifa we are an Australian club as our players are all registred in Australia and that is why we are not allowed to qualify via Oceania for the World Club championships.

No need to write to AFC or do anything like that.

We were going to have a youth team based in Canberra, but the cost and timing to set it up made it impossible at the time.

Let hope our license is renewed and not thru the NZFA like it is presently.  Once the FFA renews our license I will be much happier
