Yeah, but they are jumping on because it's (potentially) bad news. I'm waiting for all the hype surrounding a game this week and a certain player, where's that? There's no way Deaker would be interested in that stuff - he probably doesn't know the season is still going.

Try hearing it first then before making comments.

I heard Deaker talking very positively about football yesterday, he was totally enthralled with the Womens U17 world cup, the organisation, the standard, the excitement, the way the crowds had embraced it.  Comments like that from him attract people to fooball, and can only be good for the game here

To give Beaks credit... he spent an hour last night on the U-17 World Cup and it was positive to the point of being OTT!!!

I was shocked and dismayed!

Interesting article in the SMH today on this subject, it has wheels and needs to be taken seriously at all levels

For all Brendan t***er's flaws he was one of the commentators back in the early eighties for the home matches in that famous qualifying campaign, and even this morning he was needling Andrew Dewhurst about the Phoenix result over Waitakere as t***er's sons have made him an Auckland City fan.

t***er was at the Phoenix game on Saturday, and the Womens games on Sunday.  I can guarantee you that Murray Deaker was nowhere near them although Deaker did mention the Phoenix issue last night as well as his bit talk up of the U-17's.

OK, it wasnt clear.

With Brendan's family following football he gets drawn into it, and hopefully with some success will be won over. He is a typical Kiwi Rugby lover though, so will take some time.

If one of the Nix was a good golfer and took him out for a game, we'd be halfway there

I'd rather listen to Brendon than Deaker any day. I agree with what HN says above.

Radio Sport reporter Brenton Vannisselroy talks with Wellington Phoenix CEO Tony P about the clubs A-League after worrying comments from the Asian Football Association boss.

The good news is that with Fred, this, and the Moss story everyone is talking about the Phoenix.  We just need people to finish any comment with, get out and support the Phoenix this weekend.

Best way to put one up the doubters is to get 12k on Sunday.

Tell your mates there are no excuses this weekend.

One thing this whole drama should do is sort out exactly where the Phoenix fit, and which Champions League they will be eligible for. This is something that always needed to be sorted, and this gives the FFA, the Asian Confederation, FIFA and New Zealand Football a chance to sort their sh*t out.

The guys probably already pissed that Aussie will take one of Asia's WC qualifying spots. The prospect of NZ taking another by way of the play-off has probably got him blowing his lid.

Another possibility has to do with the fact that this guy is not actually Asian himself! He is from Qatar. The talk of the OFC merging with Asia has possibly got him scared sh*tless.

Everyone I've heard talk about this has assumed that if this happened that FIFA would split Asia in 2. There is another possibility worth considering that FIFA might consider a more radical realignment. There has been talk for the last 2 or 3 WC's about how many strong teams there are in Europe for the number of qualifying spots.

So how's this for a theory, OFC joins the AFC and at the same time the Middle East is split off to join with some of the Southern and Eastern European countries to form a new confederation. Imagine Qatar trying to qualify from a group including countries like Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, any number of countries ending in "stan". Perhaps even Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary and Ukraine. All countries far closer to Qatar than places like Japan and Korea.

Of course this is probably just the rantings of a lunatic (me).

In that I/V, Tony P says the Nix have an A-League licence till the end of next season. They're currently working on getting a 5 year extension.

Agree with News. One way to show how much we can bring to this league is by turning out in big numbers for all the remaining home games, starting with the next one.

Wellington should be able to muster 12K or better. If every Wellington based fan brought along a couple of mates - maybe shouted them the tickets - the ROF should rock.

Any chance of the club doing a special on tickets - 2 for the price of 1 (or better) to pump up the numbers and the enthusiasm?

But the best way to prove our worth is to win the majority of our remaining games. Score goals. Make any team who beats us know (to use a boxing analogy) they've gone 15 rounds with a serious contender.

If we can up the tempo and become an increasingly competitive team that can not only win games, but start pulling bigger crowds here and in Australia - i.e. make us a better money spinner for the A-League - it will make us harder to axe. The money will talk. Loudly.

And with all the fuss at the moment, we can't wait till next season to start gathering that momentum. This week's game is going to be watched with interest by a lot of parties - those who support us and those who might secretly want to do us harm.

if the Phoenix was treated as an Australian Club, based in NZ, and eligible for the Asian Champions League, all the kiwis in the team would be counted as overseas players for that right? How many are you allowed for the ACL?

Last year when Cardiff did progress in the FA cup, they would have been granted an exemption to play in the UEFA cup as an English side. But as had been said the issue here is the different confederations.
Permalink Permalink

the whole issue has been caused by Aussie defecting from Oceania to go to Asia! there wouldn't be tjhis problenm if the Aussie's had hung arouind and tried to help Oceania build a solid footballing tradition. Now we have to fight for everything ourselves, being the "strongest" nation in Oceania but with no clout as Oceania is pitiful as a confed.

Maybe FIFA need to spend some time and re-organise all confederations, a general shake up or spring cleaning

Tahiti - French Cup.End.

Also, Cruz Azul and other Mexican teams (maybe America? can't remember now) playing in Copa Libertadores.

So there's definitely precedent if there's a will.

MLS clubs have never played in the Copa Libertadores...although I think the US national team (and Japan also) have played in the South American champs (can't for the life of me remember what's it called right now).

Or remove the import tag on the NZ players, remove restriction on squad numbers but allow salary cap per player rather than per squad, enables competitive player negotiations and game time vs bench so creating more player turnover.

But really, anything can happen by 2011 and the new AFC president may even be Aussie.

I can see the AFC honchos being very happy with that solution...

I guarantee an Aussie will NEVER be president of the AFC.

I think people are also under estimating how important the NZ TV market is. Theres not many aussie comps that New Zealand arn't involved in that are professional, the only one I can think of is Aussie Rules. Even the provinical aussie rugby comp was closed down as not enough money was being made through it.

If the Phoenix were kicked out of the A-league it would be the end of Oceania football and probably force FIFA to restructure the confederations. This would waste massive amounts of time and money so it would just be easy if they kept the Phoenix in as it is a short term fix and wouldn't waste time or money.

Political lobbying is never a problem especially if NZ decides to move to AFC. . .

What am I talking about, AFC hates New Zealand, it all started after the Tokyo Olympics. . .

Don't underestimate how important Asia is to the FFA and Australia in general.  We are by no means untouchable.  Notice how the FFA hasn't made a public statement yet?

The whole thing's been pissing me off all day. The Herald Sun over here had a short article about it which managed to make the club sound like a dead man walking. The worst thing is that this is not going to be resolved any time soon, and unavoidably it's going to colour the way people think about us.

btw, nice article, jd.

If it is correctly handled I think it could be a blessing in disguise and force everyone to clarify the situation of the club, potentially putting us in line for the ACL.  If poorly handled I think we are gone.  Extremely depressing.  Thanks for your kind words Stop Out!
