I do agree the basin is an iconic venue in Wellington.
Such a mistake they made the cake tin a cricket oval when NZ cricket was already catered for.....
Should have made Hnry a rectangle and built a bigger stand at the Basin like the SCG or Adelaide Oval.
Very easy to say in hindsight, and I wish it was the case.
However, I was around at the time, and peripherally involved. In the mid/late nineties when the Stadium was being proposed, one-day cricket was huge and drawing very big crowds and was therefore critical in making the stadium work financially (big income days, commercial partners & and ability to sell long-term memberships to help fund the stadium). A multi-use (cricket & rugby) stadium was very much the norm as well. As it truned out the early one-day matches were fizzers (lots of bad luck weather-wise) and its popularity faded.
The stadium got big crowds in it early days for rugby - full houses for Hurricanes and even the NPC team used to get 20k+, so the defficiencies on a non-rectangular stadium took a while to become clear.
Can't turn back the clock unfortunately - but it is remains the ideal site for a rectangular stadium.
I know, I know, its serious!
