exactly this, the stadium was built nearly 30 years ago! back in 1996 cricket and super rugby were going gang busters and continued to do so for a number of years. stadium was built anticipating this would continue to grow, the lack of a roof impacted the cricket and concerts, but you can thank the thorndan NIMBYS for stalling any chance that a roof would be useful as they limited the cutoff time for any event being held at the stadium.
Not sure if they have that much sway now, however. But retrofitting a roof would cost more than a rebuild.

My suggestion re the Basin was based on a relatively cheap fix to provide a stadium of 10 - 15k. In an ideal (and affordable) world Welly has a stadium that size and leave the Tin for big events. In an ideal world unconstrained by cost pull down the tin and rebuild a football dimensioned stadium... Just dont feel the unconstrained financial world is viable right now.
As much as I love cricket Im a realist in that it's dying. Kids just dont play it more.. Especially past the age of 13. I don't know the attendance number for last year's test match but I'd wager your average Nix game draws a bigger crowd... I could be wrong.
The Basin is a prime spot to place that size ground for games people actually go and watch. Such a plan would have to have a suitable relocation plan for cricket.
I agree with the comments that it would have been nice if the tin had been this or that but dwelling on the past isn't going to help. We need to explore and push ahead with plans for the future... Our chance of influencing the future is infinitely bigger than the past.
A smaller rectangular stadium is what Welly needs...for Rugby and Football all year around. I feel if we had say a 12k stadium we would fill it for nix and canes games and it would create atmosphere. For big games we could go the Tim.
