Zura peeled off from Durante, who just sauntered back and became a spectator. Dod didn't pick up, and Paston hesitated. All 3 at fault. Pity to see the centre backs at sea like that. I was hoping those days were behind us.

Also thought they were creating more on our right when Christie came on. Have to admit I was a bit nervous when he came on for Sigmund.

What was the story with Gao's head bandage and the referee insisting on it? There was no claret that I saw.

Loved the commentators remark that the rain pouring down was "Wellingtonesque..."

Quality call......

There are two comentators, and the one with the major Australian accent is dreadfully biased, but the other one is fairly level-headed.

You're talking about Andy Harper. Sometimes makes perfect sense, but is usually blinded by his bias toward the 7 Australian-based teams. Twists his interpretations of situations to suit himself when the Phoenix are involved. Pity, cos he does appear to have a decent football brain, but just can't hide his bias.

They were quite open about their Australian bias today... even apologised to us for it. Which I thought was a nice touch after he had gone wild after their second goal

The other commentator, Mike Cockerill, is actually an ex-pat kiwi.

Adam Kwasnik

Does he gel with the rest of the team?

He hasnt scored yet...

I'm reasonably happy with a point. Dodd and Lochead played well and I thought Sigmund went alright as well. Kwasnik was marked absent and Leilei Gao  is Chinese for Waste of f**king space.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Thought that Gao was better than Kwasnik. Did win us the penalty as well. He was also one of our best players last week so I think you're being too harsh.

I don't see anything wrong with local radio bias. Good for a giggle.
I was running late to a game in Newcastle a couple of years ago & was relieved to find commentary on my car radio.
Leave it the tele presenters to be bland & "appropriate".

If we lost it was a 6-point game today. So a draw is fine.

That's the problem though Traitor. We're saying the tv commentator (Harper) is biased.

Yeah Gao and Covs, both were useless BUT both scored us a couple of penalties. Does that justify their starting positions?

Who else would take their positions? I would like to see Draper or even Costa get a run ahead of Coveny. I think Gao is still an asset though and has played better than Daniel.

Both penalties were clear cut.

Coveny cleverly put himself between defender and the ball and got clobbered. Fair play to him. Diving - no, looking for penalty - possibly.

Gao was just rugby tackled, no doubt about it.

Shocking play from the defenders in both cases.

Smeltz did brill to finish both off nicely.

'Cement shoes' Paston - well he's still very dodgy in my book. Bring back Moss please.

Apart from that , most of the Phoenix players put in a decent effort. Kwasnik and Coveny were a bit moderate, and Johnson and Dodds distribution was occasionally iffy.

Referee - excellent, missed some things, but overall a good performance I thought.

TV commentators - appalling. I dont mind a little bias if they want one team to win, but they talked crap throughout.  Do they know anything about football?

Good result though, although a win was on the cards.

Fair result IMO...

Tough day to play, very hot and humid...with lots of players cramping. For the Phoenix guys coming from freezing there arses off in Wellington to play in that was tough. Thought they would fold in the second half but they toughed it out.

Jets goals one off a deflection and the other was off side(crap defending though by Dodd and Durante off a long ball)

Jets played three accross the back. We had problems working it through midfield. We seemed to play most of the match in the middle zone of the field. Kwasnik had a very quiet game and Bertos must come back in. Coveny has a big heart but time is really catching up with him. Brown was good again...cracking shot. We finally have a midfielder who can shoot. Siggy ran all day but looks a better central defender. Gao needs a boot up the arse....he really got on the wrong side of the ref with his constant diving.

Ferrante,Christie and Daniel subbing on livened things up a bit but TBO you did wonder were the goals were going top come from. Biggest disappointment was the lack of accuracy in some of the passing....guys not under pressure hitting it out...really basic skill level stuff.

A point away is OK and it still keeps us there abouts on the table. But this team desperately needs a creative midfielder(come back Felipe all is forgiven) and another quality striker.

Harper has a stutter.

Was good to hear one of the commentators mention that they had a chat with some Phoenix officials who reiterated their desire to get a youth team into the National Youth League.  And both commentators supported the idea as well.

If we could we should try and get Song to come to the Nix.....
He had a decent game!

Actually I thought the ref was a bit too officious today. Pulled everything up, and it broke the flow of the game a lot.

Although I haven't seen the game, I wonder if the CB combination is not as tight as it should be?

Dodds and Siggy was a good CB combination last week and Durante and McKain was a good CB combination. Was Dodds and Durante combo, an improvement over McKain and Durante combo?

Is Siggy better than Durante at RB? Or should Durnate been at RB and the CB combo should have been Dodds and Siggy?

How did Johnson go today?

Lochy had a good game, eh? But it sounds like there was more attack against Siggy than against Lochy. Did he stepped up or was it less pressure on him today?

How did Daniels go as sub?

Christie sounds a better RWB but then he was fresh legs against tried ones that thought they were on the win. Did he go OK?

Where are your guys player ratings for the match?

Dodd looked more comfortable with Sigmund last week than today with Durante. I was interested in hearing that McKain wasn't playing today due to 'personal reasons.' Thought he was injured.

Yeah.. does that mean that hes benched or that he has had a family member die or what?

Ref pulled everything up today but was fairly consistent.

Johnson did quite well.  Nobody did badly at all I feel.  Kwasnik was shut down a lot by their defenders but he worked reasonably hard and made a few good runs.

The best thing was that they showed a bit more fight the last 2 weeks, so that's a positive sign. Heading in the right direction hopefully.

And Pastons kicking out on goal kicks!
Permalink Permalink

Mind you, Moss is not the best kicker of the ball either. Better shot stopper overall, but Paston probably better in the air.

Meh, either way i still prefer mossy!

Paston has always (by always I mean since the Knights days) grimaced when he takes a goal kick.  It's irritating!

Decent result overall, could possibl have won if we had buried a couple of chances earlier on.

Both penalties were pretty much stonewallers for me, ridiculous challenges by the defenders in both cases. No way did Coveny dive as stated earlier on this thread.

Newcastle's goals were very poor defensively though - 1st one was due to a complete lack of closing down, the guy had all the time in the world to hit the shot, got lucky with the deflection though. 2nd one, although offside, was still a ridiculous goal to lose. The keeper should've had it, and Dodd should not have let it bounce.

Daniel looked ok when he came on, Gao still doesn't get involved enough, and sometimes overall the team don't look sharp enough, and sometimes slow to get to loose balls.

Definitely lacking a creative midfielder who can play the killer pass. Quite a few times we get in good positions, only to squander possession through a total lack of imagination.

But, things ARE looking up and hopefully we can go on from here.
