Looks good.

Still not too keen on Covs but we can give him a shot

The only thing I really don't like is that damn Johnson, time to remove him (even though he played ok last week)

Two changes.

Muscat out, Durante in and IIIMMMRRAAYY on the bench.

WHEN the final whistle blew at Westpac Stadium last Sunday, Andrew Durante was elated.

Suffering from the flu, the regular Wellington Phoenix skipper was confined to home, forced to watch the Phoenix-Sydney FC clash on television.

With a raft of changes forced on the Phoenix, it was something of a makeshift side that took the field against Sydney. But what a job the team did, beating the Hyundai A-Leagues glamour boys 2-1, with goals to Shane Smeltz and Tim Brown securing the confidence-boosting first win of the season.

It was fantastic, Durante said. I was at home watching it and I was on the edge of my seat. We started a little bit slowly but as we grew in confidence we pressed all over the park and showed a lot of heart and character. When Brownie got that second goal, mate, I was jumping all around the living room it was great.

Then, once the elation wore off, something dawned on Durante. Would he be able to force his way back into the Phoenix lineup to play the Newcastle Jets on Monday after the superb performance by the Phoenixs back four against Sydney?

As a team its fantastic that the players who stepped in for some of the guys who have been playing regularly really did a great job. That shows the depth in the squad and that no ones position is safe.

Fortunately for Durante, he has proven to Phoenix head coach Ricki Herbert this week that he has sufficiently recovered from his illness and will line up on Monday at Energy Australia Stadium against his former teammates.

Herbert has opted to stick with the bulk of the squad the beat Sydney FC, with Durantes inclusion one of only two changes. Manny Muscat drops out of the 15, while Team Wellington goalkeeper Phil Imray gets a call-up to the big time. With regular No 1 stopper Glen Moss still bothered by a minor injury, Mark Paston will start in goal against the Jets. Imray makes the bench in place of last weekends backup keeper Jacob Spoonley.

While the Phoenix are taking a steady approach as they search for their first ever back-to-back wins in the Hyundai A-League, the Jets have some significant personnel problems forced by injuries and representative duties.

Theyve got some key guys out, Durante said. Its probably a good time to get them but also a dangerous time. Theyre the sort of team that when everythings against them they can lift and, especially being at home, theyll have the crowd behind them.

And how does the hero of the Jets championship-winning side last season expect to be greeted by that crowd on his return to Newcastle?

A couple of people Ive spoken to over there are telling me I should expect a pretty friendly welcome. I dont believe that, of course, but well wait and see.

Mondays match kicks off at 3pm AEDT (5pm NZDT) and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 2 in Australia and Sky Sport 1 in New Zealand.

I haven't seen a lot of Imray so could someone explain why Imray is in for Spoonley?
It is just reserve goalkeeper but I thought Spoonley would be more than adequate cover

Jacob has an O-League game for Auckland City on 1st November against Waitakere. If Jacob takes the field he then has a 30 day stand down which would mean that he wouldn't be able to play. Phil's first game for Team Wellington isn't until 9th November in the NZFC.

You missed Draper. Pisses me off when people do that.

Imray had a trial at Hibs earlier this year right? Is there any deeper reason as to why Spoonley isn't on the bench, or is Ricky just sharing the bench duties around the greater Wellington keeping community?

Sorry, missed oyur post before I posted Ollie... that explains things nicely

Muscat out? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Johnson again? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo
And I'm also not sure Covsies performance warranted another start, but everyone is saying that 442 is the way to go so, whatever.

Oh and another thing, still no Costa or Drapes...
You know we belong together...

We won last week, so this week we should change it on the off chance it comes off.

Well, I for one am happy with the (lack of) changes... backs up what I've been saying (and typing) all week.

Good luck boys!

Mulligan to central midfield for johnson!
Will give the creativity we are missing while still having the holding midfielder in brown!

mulligan might have to come off the bench and prove himself before he has any hope of gaining another start , whether at either right back or in midfield tigers2008-10-03 22:39:36

Not convinced Mulligan has done enough to get a spot in midfield...let's see him walk before he runs...

What do people think of seeing Plodder getting more of a run in midfield? Thought he was excellent when he came on last week and we haven't (as i can remember) seen to much of him in what i presume is his preferred position

plodder played a nice first touch volley in a one two in the the sydney half and of course he scored for the AWs

so maybe ricki's new cunning plan of playing people in their usual position might pay dividends for christie ....and dodd and siggy and kwasi and...

yep that'd be the thing. has it been announced?

Imray Ferrante Plodder Daniel

or Bertos and McKain somewhere?

Go back a page Martin.  Leo and McKain are not in the squad.  The only changes from last week are Durante in for Muscat and Imray for Spoonley.

You'd expect that I guess, three midfielders on the bench is a bit dull though.

Radio Sport said this is the side:
                                       Paston
Durante          Sigmund            Dodd           Lochhead
                         Johnson            Brown
Gao                                                           Kwasnik
                 Coveny              Smeltz

... so just one change, Durante for Muscat.

Looks good to me.

Ricki on the Phoenix hour said Siggy would have played Right Back last week if Durante hadn't been broken so I suspect he's likely to be there this week.

Someone suggested plodder, hes worth a go off the bench at least to start with i think...may force his way back in to the squad

Allegedly

Aussie holiday.

Muscat did ok last week. Looked ok pre-season too. I think he was judged on a poor game v Melb. He may develop well.

The line-up looks good to me. I hope it is the beginning of winning streak. hard to change much with last week performance as it was very significant factor. Tough call on McKain but with only four subs on the bench and plenty of defence & midfield make shift covers with the great turn around performance last week really made the decision very cut-throat IMO.AllWhitebelievr2008-10-05 23:17:35

I'm interested to see how Bertos reacts to trying to force his way back in to an already very competitive midfield, and Daniel for that matter!...To think that last seaon Daniel was a PR dream with the kids, but now is struggling for a place.
