Interesting that the crowd was less than this. Poor walk up crowd?

I reckon about 3,000 people bought tickets, then heard about Dane Rumble playing and didn't show up.

Why complain all year about players not getting their chance. then when an oportunity comes up you MOAN.

I don't have a problem with resting Ifill or Lia or about other players getting a chance. If that is what the coach wants to do, its fine by me. In fact some fresh legs in there might be just what the team needs. What I have a problem with is the coach undermining the marketing of the game.

The marketing people and the coach and the captain should all be singing off the same sheet.

Durante had it right...he said we really need to win this because we need to get back into a winning mode before the playoffs and its important to perform in front of the home fans etc. This is the sort of stuff that people who buy tickets want to hear. People have lots of options on how to spend their money.....

Ricki should have said the same thing....if he wanted to rest Ifill and Lia then he should have made an announcement on the morning of the match that they won't be playing because of injury/flu etc. I know its slightly dishonest but its done all over the sporting world.

People understand players getting injured....they don't understand when they have to pay full price for what they percive as a lesser product.

So you'd rather Ricki lied to the media and public?

What total bullsh*t. That will work precisely once and then Ricki will get a reputation for never being straight up, which will have much more serious long-term implications.

I realise you are anxious about crowd sizes etc, but advocating lying as a marketing strategy?

I agree that telling a lie is Bad Bad Bad. But in professional sport how often do players/coaches/managers lie? All the time IMO. How often in interviews do people tell the truth? Its all spin and media beatup.
Ifill was in bed with the flu all week.....so if they did not want to play him is it deception to say he had not sufficiently recovered from his illness and needs more recovery time?

As it turned out the whole thing was pointless because Ifill and lia both played.

Pax got just over 13k. My theory is that McDonalds had 3 whole gates dedicated to the Treatme deal and that no where near sold out. 3 gates ~3k, idk about the rest :D

From this interview with Gareth, there was supposed to be an initiative today

The finals are run by the FFA, I hope they get their act together and help promote it.

I thought the structure had changed this season and the club actually gets a say in the matter this time, or is that just a share of the sales? Either way, the Nix should still be promoting the sh*t outta this.

Looks like all of the supporters who will ALWAYS be at the game, no matter what, have all purchased their tickets. Time for the rest of Wellington to buy theirs.

It was a fantastic day, and I assume the Basin was packed full? There's probably a few sports fans who like to go out and watch both Cricket and Football - however international Cricket on a good day in Wellington only happens once or twice a year.

10 tickets brought at 1pm today 4395 to 4404
Had no issues at all with ticketek, though had to wait for the public sales as I needed 10 tickets but could only purchase 8 during members sale.

Can't wait, please bring me a win Phoenix!  Will be an awesome belated bday pressie.

I'm not worried, sales should rocket up now that they are on sale to the public.

I hope so Patrick. Drove past RoF yesterday eveing, still had Stripey Sunday Billboard up, No Flags on Lamposts yet no banner on overpass.... I know it is "an FFA Game" and everything but I would have loved to see things ramped up a fair bit in that regard.

Yeah get the feeling at the moment unless your a big fan, you wont really know its all go on Friday. We need to find the extra 14K+ that were turning up to our first finals. Hopefully FFA at least get some ads organised for tomorrow!

Marketing liek that is up to the FFa though.  Nix can only arrange so much (eg, player interactions)

End of an era.  Vinnie - It's over.

^ Why would they pay to promote our game when WP could be a potential irritant in the finals...??
Think AFC issue...   and     " Oh no, not another NZ team taking OUR Aussie trophy!"..... first the league, then the basketball.....where will it stop??

They will take our money all season, do little to promote this game here and they'll just hope Sydney do the business, normal transmission will be resumed come grand final Day, its (hopefully for them) an all-Australian affair.

The mission, EVERY season, for the Wellington Phoenix is to go all the way and really stuff that tidy scenario up for them...why not start on Friday, Nix?
GO YOU GOOD THINGS!!

Don't think we've ever taken the league title, the Warriors have made the grand final twice but never won it.
