Well we have gotten a lot closer..

C'mon - you support Bolton. You should be used to watching a team with a lack of creative spark :)

We have the personal. Although that changes next year with the loss of Moss and Smeltz
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

And actually, no, we don't. I actually think Ricky's done well to turn us into a competetive unit given the players at his disposal.

True. Just thinking that today, and part of the reason I'm not distraught about losing to Sydney.

Let's face it, our squad is not exactly brimming over with exciting match-winning talent. Probably just Bertos, Daniel (arguable) and one ruthless striker who thankfully manages to put away 4 out of 5 clear chances he gets. Frankly we're bloody lucky Smeltz has been mostly injury free or we'd be down there with Newcastle.

Much as I admire them the rest are just grafters and battlers.

Daniel hasn't shown any of what he did last year in his limited appearances so far this year, has lacked energy completely

One of the commentators stated during the game that the first thing Ricki said to him before the game was "Well we're not going to win the wooden spoon this year!". Does that seem a little defeatist to others? Surely he should have been concentrating on the game ahead and the vital need for 3 points rather than on an empty victory.

and if he said he wanted to kill someone, would you actually take that at face value too?

I agree. You watch the Perth/Melbourne game after ours, and it was far more exciting.
I am rather disappointed with how we play fpr much of the time. When we are trailiing with 10 mins to go, then suddenly we often start playing as we should the whole time.

The defence and Smeltz finishing has been really good this year, but we need to improve in other areas, and God knows what will happen when Smeltz is gone.

Oh, so it was a commentator-led conspiracy to undermine Ricki Herbert and the Phoenix?

At the start of the year wasn't this squad going to take us to the finals?
Whats happened to make them now  just grafters and battlers?
Didn't Ricki get to choose his players?
Sorry mate he hasn't done well at all

Well we all know you have a vendetta against RH, so your opinions don't carry much weight.

I don't think many people expected us to cruise into the finals, especially when we realised we wouldn't be signing a partner for Smeltz.
Top four was the goal, but its the goal for every team, every season.

Your funny too Lemon, a Vendetta?  lol till it hurts.
Mate I just know Herberts been found out so many times this season, its no longer funny.
Yes he did state top for this year, as is every teams goal, but hasn't coached like it.
Don't think hes able.
No one EVER said it would be a cruise.
And its only because Welly and the club deserve more, not any vendetta.

Auskiwi, serious question. Apologies if it's been asked before. Who would you have coaching the Nix instead of Ricki?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I suppose it comes down to what you are willing to accept ....5th out of 8 is mid table and not a bad effort I suppose. If you were the owner of the club, were getting big crowds, and making money - you could live with the situation maybe?  I would imagine that Terry wants an improvement all round that will result in more bums on seats. The only way to do that is to get a team that performs better than the one he has. How will he decide to do that?

Definitely better players.
Maybe a good marquee?
Maybe a new coach?

RH should be under pressure to keep his job because the results haven't been that great. I'm not sure if you give him another year or get someone else in. Comes down to how much confidence you have in him to improve things. I'm leaning towards getting someone else in to run the show.

Under your reasoning we would see four coachess lose their job each year.

I don't think now would be the time to drop RH, I think this season's effort has earned him the chance to be the coach at the start of next season. As a brand new club it is all the more important that we have stable leadership, and what we need is to strike the balance of reasonable results and building a good squad. In my mind Ricki deserves the chance to get strong players in this winter and try and improve next season. If we do no better, then we need to look at the coach.

Well said Napier Nix. I think 5th is a fail and the crowds won't come when the team plays like a rabble.

Bloke standing next to me at the Perth (I think) game suggested we get Colin Tuaa in.

Colin Tuaa who just got the push from Auckland City and left the NZ coaching set-up to head the Samoan FA ?

Auskiwi - 5th a fail???? finishing 5th is a damn sight better than 8th, which is where every other NZ team has finished in the current format of the league. After being in existence for two years I think the Nix whilst aiming for a top four spot would be happy to be 5th, with that target of pushing on to highwer honours third season running!

changes need to be made, but I think its more of a case of getting the right squad on the field and then look at the coaching.

Queenslander 3x a year.

We're not close to guaranteed 5th yet.

Rumour says squad politics, but form isn't grand for a club that see themselves as the best side in NZ.  Any Auckland City coach that goes a couple of games without beating Waitakere is always going to be questioned.  Loz or Ted would have a better insight.

I've heard some very loud noises, from some reliable sources, about how certain players at ACFC may just have had a lot to do with it.
