I must say, even though he's only scored twice this year, Tyler Boyd must be up there with our 'most improved'. I reckon he will be one of the key attackers for us next year and will hopefully bag a lot more goals.

The rate he's improved makes me think that investing in youth is certainly the way to go. If Matthew Ridenton can do the same next year in his second season we could become significantly better with the same players.

Both of them made a real impact on Sunday. Awesome.

Also, if Boyd does become our main attacking, with Brockie off the bench, does that mean we look at keeping Krishna?

I hope that can be said of all our youngsters, which we have a few.

Given that the Fijian Flyer has made the 442 Player of the Week, are those comments about him being a "flat-track bully" in need of any revision?

I never understood what that meant, myself. In cricket, it means a batsman who can plunder the attack on a docile pitch but is helpless on one which moves around more. What does that mean in football? What's a "flat track" in this connotation?

P.S. A Pareto optimum is "a situation where no-one can be made better off without making someone worse off". More or less a "win-win" situation. I'm not sure how negotiations between a club and a player where both sides like the deal can be anything else - it's not as if an agent can make anyone do anything without the other actor's consent.

Basically means that they dominate one level but struggle to step up.

It's used as an idiom for non-cricket related examples.

I am sure Clapham is a great guy and a good player for the Dragons but he would probably struggle at the A league level.

For all that is worth, Russel Kamo is probably a better player than Clapham, IMHO.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Krishna on a two year deal. I like it. Boyd will be better next year. Gutted for Ifill as this is likely his spot. But now what for Stein?

Krishna signing on for two more years. I think its great news for all involved, except waffles...

True.

I love to see Ifill back. With his class and experience, Ernie should use him as deluxe premium impact player, a player who can change a game in the last minute. After coming back from his injury, he will be strong minded, like playing his last game, minute. With Ifill we WILL win the grand final next year! Oh. OK, I got a bit excited.

How long until Krishna is a naturalised kiwi? Just thinking that the 2nd year of his contract the HAL is scheduled to drop to 4 imports, big call to commit until then.

What a horrible signing. Im on record as saying this is an epic waste of an import slot. Especially considering it drops down to 4.

I could imagine him possibly being signed to a 1 yr deal close to minimum wage, if not I will proposition him to join my cap10 team.

However, Krishna's New Zealand residency application was granted earlier this month which means he is now unable to spend extended periods outside New Zealand. New New Zealand residents need to spend a minimum of 184 days in the country across the first two years if they wish to be granted permanent residence, a requirement that the 25-year-old would be unable to fulfil if he was signed by Derby.

From Jun 2013 - http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10887895

But I don't know enough about these things to know if that will get him classed as a local after next season. I'm under the assumption it will and that would explain the 2 year deal.

No he will still be an import. He needs to have citizenship or be in the process of applying for it to be classed as a local player. Normally you can't get citizenship until 5 years AFTER you get NZ residency, although it can be reduced to 20 months if you can prove exceptional circumstances.

Very interesting that the consensus of this forum is so massively against Krishna. But it was against Kenny C. until he got his act together about 10 games in.

The other possibility is that if we are signing Roy this may open up funds for spending elsewhere as I'd hope and imagine that they haven't signed him on the same coin as Iffy, say...

Still not 100% sold on Krishna, but he's given us more of a lift than Brockie, but hasn't been as great at tucking the ball away...

I think Ernie has proven a few of us wrong

I think this is an odd signing. They wont give Stein a two year deal, who is a proven import in the league, over a guy that is still hit or miss (personally I think miss)?????? I think this signing here means the end of Stein.

Its a big call especially in light of his second year with only 4 imports. Next year is Riera, Carlos, Kenny, Roy +1. Ifill will be naturalised.

Ernie tends to like fast nippy players. He now has the guy up front that has pace that he kinda wanted. I really hope this works for us.

This
It seems like the standard default setting for players is that the YF forum trashes them immediately. However once the player settles in and starts to find some form then people start saying how they might be OK after all. It happens to just about every player. Boyd was rubbished, so was Stein, Kenny was meant to be no better than Totori, people had doubts about Riera etc etc. Why people think players will automatically play to their full potential immediately is beyond me. Some players adapt in a few games others take half a season. I have seen enough of Krishna to think he will be an excellent  A-league player. I certainly trust Ernies judgement more than most on these forums.

That is part of what makes me wonder about Krishna will be an import in his second year. Carlos, Kenny and Riera have 1 more season left and we are only offering Waffles a 1 year deal. Maybe we need to ask Piney to clarification for us.

I'm fairly excited about this, guys with pace do tend to do quite well in this league and he's shown quite a bit in the last few games.

Realistically, why would we re-sign Ifill to rehab with us?  Surely you wait and see whether he can play again before making a decision - I think the likelihood of him appearing for us if very slim.  I'm a massive fan of him but I think it's very unlikely.

I hope we leave a roster spot open for him. Give him the pre-season to prove he is still up to it. He wouldn't be a 90m player but with the larger benches now, he could give us a valuable 20-30m spell when we need some inspiration.

Look at where we are right now with injuries, you need your squad - I just don't think you can carry a player who can't play 90 minutes.

Our injury problems are at fullback and we have a massive lack of depth in the midfield. We have 5 roster spots (4 if we re-signed Ifill) to fix those issues. Timmins, Gulley, Burfoot maybe are options for those.

But up front we have a lot of depth with Boyd, Brockie, Krishna signed up and we are trying to keep Huysegems. So if we did retain Ifill he would be the 5th choice and we don't need 90 minutes from a 5th choice option.

Yes but a contracted player is one less player you don't have in another position.  You could argue that we don't need a 5th choice striker in a squad of 23.  Anyway, let's see if he can get back to match fitness, then think about whether we offer him a contract.  He can rehab on the PFA cash!

Back to Krishna, I feel genuinely pleased for him.  He seems like one of ours even those he both not a kiwi and an Aucklander

I've never seen krishna play until his appearances for the phoenix, and on the basis of that alone I would say he's worth this deal.

I just don't get the criticism, it seemed fairly obvious there was some spark there, and his first game was the only one where I thought he wasn't that great. Each appearance since then has shown at least a couple of moments of real quality, which is enough for me to think that Ernie can get that out of him consistently over time.

His two year deal might well have something to do with Carlos being jettisoned after next season when the import quota drops too.

I thinik signing Krishna is actually a good thing, is he really a 5th choice striker, Stein may well be gone, which leaves Brockie, Boyd, Ifill? All Kiwis for next season. I could actually see Krishna starting with Ifill as a great option with Boyd and Brockie scrapping it out for the bench.

Queenslander 3x a year.
