Contracted Players - Return of the Long Pins
Is it possible that it was an automatic extension deal? Like if he played a certain number of games he could extend his contract

Wild speculation:
The new coach is Ramon but they're waiting to after the OCL to announce. He's agreed to Lowry getting an extension though, but Lowry went and tweeted about it when he wasn't meant to.

He's a decent player. We do have good CB stocks in Rossi, Lowry and Fox coming through. Dura will be kept on his toes.

Rossi is already a far better player than Dura ever was. Lowry and Fox are definitely in the running for a starting spot next season imo, Dura has been average to poor for the last 2 seasons and Lowry and Fox have impressed me at every turn.

I think Lowry had a shocker one game this season too, early on. Or maybe I'm imagining it

Update: Club say Ryan Lowry triggered a two year contract extension at the end of the season. https://t.co/hpVitu4wP8

I'm all for retaining him, there isn't a great many CB options floating around but a +2 year extension for playing 8 games is a rather strange one.

I think he showed enough in the games played so far to be a good long-term option for us.
Better 2 years than none - we truly need to build a stable squad.

I think Lowry was ok as a guy floating round the fringes of the starting XI, never looked dominant. Doubt he will ever be a consistent starter but an ok option in a few different positions

Hm, not sure I would agree. He was a new guy and reasonably young, so I am not worried about him being slowly eased into the first team and not thrown in at the deep end, as long as he was seen as a long-term prospect rather than as a one-season-quick-fix-wonder.
In the past season we had Tratt and Doyle as fullbacks, Dura and Rossi as our first choice CBs with Fox a first choice backup and Parkhouse in the mix. However, Dura is, with all respect to a senior player, on his last legs, Tratt's gone home and Rossi won't stay here forever - he'll be off after another season or two. Who are the defenders you want to build the new defence around for the next two or three seasons?
I am happy for Lowry to have made the commitment for two seasons, based on the above, unless you really fancy our chances in the transfer market. I would rather we keep our spare change to get a decent replacement for Roly, unless you reckon our midfield is sorted?

For me he's a potential Siggy type player. Except he's a decent amount shorter. Sig is 187cm, Rossi 188, Dura 182 and Lowry 181.
He strikes me as genuinely hard working and fairly athletic, and seems to have that hate to lose attitude.
But with his height he doesn't have the complete physical package to be a Siggy styled player (I guess there is a reason Sig popped up for those headed goals and generally commanded in the box in the air) and Lowry would need to add something in the way of footballing skills and leadership and organisation if he is to take a Dura role I think. Not impossible, but I've not seen it yet.
(And I think Rossi is another level again. Physically has the goods, seems to be able to organise when Dura is out, and shows some great judgement and footballing skills.)
But, even if Lowry ends up only a decent squad utility, I think he's still well worth having for the next couple of years, and I would imagine definitely value for money.
But I agree - I'd definately also be looking for another young CB talent to come into the squad for sure.
Shame we lost Tratt, as you say. I hadn't quite realised he had played a lot at CB. Had the height at 190cm. Plus I just read he captained the Sydney FC U20 side to the 2014 National Youth League title, so he had leadership skills as well. A real shame we've lost him, for now at least. So we loose CB cover and versatility with Tratt as well.
I'd keep him, but you have to be very good and athletic to be a 180cm centre back and I don't think he is. Distribution is ok, not really an attacking player at fullback so in my mind we have better players in the squad in those positions hence my comment he'll be more of a backup.
Normo's coming home
Has anyone heard of any player playing for any club in the world who has activated a two year contract clause?
One year sure (Totori) springs to mind but two?
Classy stuff by whomever negotiated and signed of on that one (dome?)

It does seem unusual given he signed from the state league so we should have all of the power

We had a few, better than Totori, who activated one year extensions.

One contract at Nix I heard of had the extension triggered based on starting games. With AW duties and injury Lowry could have got enough starts to trigger an auto extension. ( may well have been 2 Yrs) Normally an average bench player would not get the starts, so no major concern .

Wasn't Fox signed on for another two years after having only played a few games in his first season?

Lowry got 8 games of which 7 he started. Two of the games you could say he got the start because of the AW games. (v New Caledonia in November and Fiji in March) http://www.ultimatealeague.com/player_detail.php?p...

Lia posted on linkedin he is a Free Agent and still selling stuff on Vic Deals.

Hm. I would've actually kept Lia considering Moss is going.
a.haak

Pretty poor for the club not to formally announce that he is not being re-signed. Communication by the club can be quite haphazard
Normo's coming home
Isn't it more that he's in a state of flux until the manager situation is resolved? A new manager might well offer him a deal.

You can't blame Lia for wanting to shop himself around, but there's no decision for the club to formally announce...
