would just add too that just coz "we're gonna  score in a minute" gets sung under certain circumstances 13,000 miles away, that doesn't mean that in Aotearoa we can't sing it any bloody time we like, i'm not interested in impressing other people with a slavish adherence to other nation's cultural expressions - I'm interested in making some noise for the Phoenix -

BTW you might want to pick up a football mag called FourFourTwo and read Ross's article (see the News forum thread).

Now lets get this right then, as a chant dosnt originate from NZ we dont try to adapt it or use it.Im guessing  but are you saying all overseas clubs fans use only their own original chants.Sure dosnt seem that way when i watch games on the box.
Seems you may have forgotton that the team and fans started way behind all others.

Despite some rather feeble attempts to lesson the achievements of both the team and the fans  by some, fortunately you are very much a minority.Does make me wonder how many will be swinging off the coat tails when things do start to go right.

From adversity comes strength.

Ballane - great post.  I think what you've said probably applies to a lot of the Phoenix fans.
We have only had five home games so I'm guessing a large part of the Nix supporters may have only ever been to a Phoenix game.  We're all learning - and it will only get better.

So Daniel's got his Wellies mixed up, big deal. At the risk of being branded a "cnut", I'm with him and Ginger Eejit on this one.  Where's the creativity and humour in the chanting?  Where's the topicality?

Sure it's early days but we can do better.  And yes, "stand up for the Phoenix" is a mess without the Go West tune.  Yes, the team needs to up their game but so do we.  Let's not just be content with what we've got cos that's when complacency sets in.  It's called constructive criticism boys - stop reading your own press and wallowing in self congratulation.

So that's three of us who can stand together.  Does that justify a zone of our own?

In my view, and it's only my view, anyone who sees differently either has little football experience (I suppose that could be called education) or doesn't want to face reality.

What reality is it that we need to face?

That, out of all the previous attempts to get an NZ based team going in these leagues have failed miserably, but the 'Nix have exceeded expectations (which weren't much) both on and off the pitch?

That Wellington has gotten behind the 'Nix to the extent of having arguably the loudest, proudest supporters in the League after mere months of existence and regardless of results we're trying to look on the bright side of things?

That Wellington has got a pretty damn decent (IMHO) football team competing on an International level on a weekly basis and, while not winning to the extent everyone would like, are playing some damn entertaining football at times?

I could  go on, but I'll probably descend into uneducated personal attacks that would obviously run of the back of such a football purist as yourself.

I bet you're from Auckland...

Humour: I think sometimes we're moderately funny - where appropriate.  I thought Seagull was hilarious, more so because apparently it was supposed to be something else!  I also think that "we're going to score in a minute" just after they have is both supportive AND a giggle.

Creativity: fair enough - get contributing!  Coming along on the day and being a lone voice with a new chant isn't going to do it.  You need to sort out a group, and posting on here would be a good start.  We all want to hear ideas for new chants, that's why there's a thread for it!

Topicality: not clear on what you mean here.  Your established European teams have chants that are historically topical.  We have one: We're not Auckland any more.  But we're still very young, so those sorts of chants will take time.

And just to be clear, what dan'sleftbollock posted wasn't constructive criticism, it was inciteful vitirolic garbage.

Just thought i would add this that feverish has posted elswhere. Its from an article in 442 in which they interviewed Ross.

<!-- Start Member Post -->

"Ross talks about club supporters in his latest piece.

He says he is loving the support, in particular getting clapped off even when they have lost. He says Yellow Fever challenges for the best supporters group outside Melbourne (stick that up ya John Chanter)

(He also mentions when we ran him through a few of our chants after the Sydney away game)

nice one Ross - you are a credit to the club"
So guess we must be doing some things right.

There are plenty of people in this boat, but if two start a chant and it's overrun by something else what can you do  ?

Of course, now seating is being enforced the chances of gathering a critical mass to try something new is pretty much screwed anyway.

if you don't like the chants, make up some yourself... if the people people that put a lot of effort in supporting the Nix not up to your glorious standards, make up your own webpage and do it properly...start up your own zone in the stadium, you can call it the we-can-do-it-better zone.

If you're referring to Frankie then I think it's a bit mean to call his level of abuse pathetic.  That's the highest level of abuse of which he's capable.

I have to say I agree with Daniel about 50%. I like the crowd to be spontaneous, but sometimes some chants seem to be a little out of place (but I sing them anyway).
Don't agree with Daniel about the 'we got the best keeper in the league' bit because:
1) we really DO have the best keeper - it's the defence, in case, that at times is caught a little off couard
2) Even if the had the crappiest keeper in the league, it's always good to encourage your player - read my other posts re: Cleberson, and I seem to be saying the same things over and over.

Now back to my point.
I guess one thing I'd love to see in the YF zone is to have 1 or 2 'leaders' (maybe one by the front rows where I sit and one higher up) who start all the chants.
Now this might already be happening, and if it is I apologize for how dumb I am. I usually like to watch the game, not ugly mugs like those of you people! :D

So yeah, if we had a couple of keen lads, maybe with some sort of audio-device, we could all follow the lead, and that way it'd be easier for more people to learn all our chants and it'd be easier to make up new ones as well...

what'd ya think?

I think its pretty tough to try to be original with the chants- they have to stay simple so everyone can join in- its all well and good having original chants, but if 20 people are being creative I'm pretty sure the rest of the crowd (and YF) won't join in cos they won't know what the hell we are singing about, and there will be not atmosphere motivating the players on the pitch. But in saying this, best of luck with starting up your own 'special different chants'.

BTW- fantastic call on the danielsleftnut spray- seems to be all that is coming out of his mouth.

Im pretty sure that this is not going to be a popular post but here goes anyway.

Id like to talk about the chanting in the Yellow Fever section of the stadium, but before I do Id like you to know that without a doubt the atmosphere at the Phoenix games far surpass any sporting atmosphere Ive seen in NZ.  However, it seems to me that a vast majority that sit in the Yellow Fever part of the stand are more intent on acting like a football fan than actually being a football fan.  By this I mean there are a lot of people that sing and chant to create what they think is a great atmosphere, unfortunately without understanding the game they have absolutely no comprehension of the meaning of the chants.  Here are a few examples of what I mean:

Score in a minute, were gonna score in a minute in the rest of the football world this is a chant normally used when your team is completely dominating the game, have maybe hit the woodwork a couple of times and there is one way traffic on the park.  Not in Wellington, we prefer to sing it 2 minutes into a game and it normally results in the Phoenix going one nil down.

Youre sh*it and you know you are Again normally reserved for when youre 2 or 3 up against a team that are struggling in the league.  Not in Wellington, we like to do it when were third from bottom and drawing to the top of the table team (who go on to beat us).

Forget the ball, break his legs Really? Come on, when has there been a game at the cake tin this season that has been agro enough to warrant this?

Weve got the best keeper in the league Not sure if youve noticed but weve conceded more goals than anyone else in the league, compare our leekage of 16 goals to the CCM of 5 and I know which keeper Id rather have.

I guess what Im trying to say is that crowd reaction is more spontaneous and appropriate when its reacting to something thats happening on the pitch, not being orchestrated by some 16 year old wanna be hooligan with no clue about the game.  In the end it makes the support for the Phoenix appear naive and uneducated.  We have so many decent chants that support the team and dont make us look like complete idiots, and there are always going to be games when we get to use the fun ones think about it.

Oh yeah, and when are we going to stop giving the team a standing ovation regardless of what happens on the pitch, applauding the players off the park after a game like Sundays means that as fans were happy to support a team that defends like schoolboys and has less firepower up front than the average Sunday pub team.

Just one more point Is it only me that thinks that impending arrival of David Beckham and the LA Galaxy Rangers Rovers United City County FC is turning football into a circus.  I mean 24,000 turning out to see a performing seal.  Not to mention that were putting a double header weekend of football right in the middle of our season, this is all about making a little Greek bloke a little richer.

Rant Over

Yes Danielsleftball I understand exactly where you are coming from and it is good to read a post which is obviously from a fellow football Cognoscente. BTW very amusing forum name you have, maybe I could change my to Danielsrightball oe something?... ermm....

Anyhow. Yes the Chants/songs are shocking... I proposed this one and it was completely ignored:

Moss! Moss!
You never play dross!
Looking at you I never tire!
Cuse unlike a certain vampire!
you never fear a Cross!

Moss! Moss!
In goal you are the boss!
Don't ever call me a liar!
Or I'll set you on fire!
when I say you are handsome as Matt Goss!
That guy we all loved out of the former boy band Bros!
Moss! Moss!

Yes you are probabily stunned as I was that no one understood this genius. I thought it would be very fine singing this song along to the tune of "Girlfriend in a Coma" by the Smiths.

I would not listen to that little oink FrankieMac as he obviously knows nothing about our great game rugby.

Mr Herbert contacted you about your opinion on tactics yet? Yes I Know he is not in the same league as Arsy or Sir but we must help where we can.
