To say the truth, I have not been very happy with the Phoenix recently. I think that they do struggle to take criticism. I heard an interview with Herbet earlier in the week and he was pretty evasive, basically refusing to give any straight answers.

I think that the Dom Post has been getting carried away with Serepisos. Still, though, he owes a lot of money to a lot of people. If he wants the paper off his back, he should pay his bills in time.

Generally, the dom post do do a good job with the Phoenix. I'm sure it's more than the Herald ever did for the Knights. Either way, whoever is right or wrong, the Phoenix need to restore their relationship with the dom post. They would find it hard to survive on their own.

Cheers Jr, I'd make a dreadful journo as the subs would always be harping on about the need for clean copy. Looks like I got excited with the copy, paste function there.

The journo'ing by the Dom post is average at best across the whole range of sections - this is just consistent. If the DOm wants to attack Terry - then expect Terry to be cautious in his engagement - common sense isn't it.

Lesson for the Dom is - don't bite the hand that feeds and raise your own level of professionalism before pointing out others lapses in it.

From that opinion piece it looks to me as if the players are being asked questions that they aren't able to answer. What good would it have been to talk to Simon Elliot? They would've asked him why he isn't being picked, whether he still thinks it was worth coming to the Nix, whether there are disagreements between him and management etc, and anything he could've said would cause futher problems. Sounds to me as if they were trying to stir up trouble.

Well done to Jonathan Millmow. Relations between the Dompost and Phoenix will get better with that dribble you've written.

Here is our public pledge: We will always cover the club, but the reporting will be without fear or favour.

Where the hell were you for the Phoenix vs Team Wellington game???

Interesting.....
"The players were upset that we sought their reaction to owner Terry Serepisos being pursued by the taxman, including allegations that their own KiwiSaver entitlements had not been paid."

So one of Millmows criticisms is that the players were upset that a reporter tried to find out details in regards to  private financial information?

Millmow you are a a joke.

We have a significant number of members and mods on thsi YF forum who are not only stauch, also blinded to the point that "No one should criticise our WP". This seige mentality is unhealthy especially when WP as a club has been struggling on and off the field of late. Players are like entertainers and they need to put their enthusiasms through media like Dom Post and hopefully, this will draw in more supporters for the club. Personal denigrations, insults and name calling are the norm from some YF members and forum members here. Have another good look in the mirror!

Setting aside the Doom Post vs Terry issues for a moment it is interesting to reflect on where you get your football news these days. Personally I get news from this forum, 4-4-2 website, radio and the club. The club news is typically via Face Book. From a football perspective newspapers are far less about news and more about commentary these days. There has been the odd decent analytical piece in the Doom Post and the Herald but I personally find the best commentary to be on radio - we are very fortunate with the quality of the local radio team covering football.

The media access the club has to supporters is also interesting to think about. The club has 32,000 Face Book friends, 1,000 Twitter followers and this site has 7,000 members.

Just observations.

It's a sententious, pompous sort of piece with, as someone mentioned earlier, more than a whiff of emotional blackmail about it. Having said that, I agree with Zinidane's comment that there is no point getting all hot under the collar about it. Both parties should just simply sit down and lay out some ground rules without rancour. It's hardly a North v South Korea situation.

I think the Phoenix are missing Tony P real bad. There's a clear lack of leadership off the field where establishing healthy working relationships with sponsors, media etc is so important. Closing down a major outlet because the Dom asked questions about Terry S not paying taxes is pathetic.

Totally agree with what Flash Harry said

I have read the Dom article a few times and there is some truth in it. And some speculation.  I would have thought that a journalist would have had a few chats with the media people at the Phoenix before going to the extent of publishing it. The footballing relationship  between the 2 organisation needs attention, we are certainly missing Tony P.

I notice there are not any football articles on the YF news from the Dom Post. If it is a deliberate policy, I think it is misguided

i think the phoenix's PR this year has been diabolical. And Herbert needs to start answering questions, some of the rubbish that he's spoken this year has been unacceptable. You can't evade questions forever.

The hpoenix need to start managing these stories so that the first thing we hear about terry going under isn't on the front page of the dompost and so that the players aren't put in the position of having to answer questions.
millmow shoots from the hip and I think this is a bit childish really. but it does show that the phoenix aren't managing relations well, not with the media, not with the generl public and not with the IRD.

can I ask what there is for the paper to be positive about? The results are poor, the football isn't great, off season signings have been awful, crowds are down significantly, the manager is increasingly defensive, and the owner is having major financial problems. What are the paper supposed to write about?

You can. Example. I was only replying to Azevo/J82's comments about who the Phoenix ARE talking to. They probably have no problem talking to Sam Worthington about the game tonight but Millmow has no interest in writing about such things. As I said, it's probably not his job to. He's more likely to pick at something negative about the club.

At the risk of bailing back into the boat, I agree.  The Dominion Post hasn't been positive, but it's been a poor season on and off the field.

Yep, because it's news.
Millmow should realise that the club does have protocols like he mentions which the players must adhere to whether he likes it or not and regardless of the Doom Post's protocols. The Phoenix are their employers, it is in their contracts, so if it says the players can't speak to media regarding the phoenix unless if goes through John Mitchell then that's what they have to do. Either that or face the boss in the morning.

My problem with the paper is not about the coverage not being positive - it is about the coverage not being objective, factually based, balanced and to a standard applied equally to all sports (i.e. issues covered and tone of coverage).

I have few issues with the coverage of the Nix on the field but many issues with the coverage of Terry's finances - especially the tone and paucity of facts.

I hope that the paper and the Nix can re-establish a working relationship but there is clearly fault on both sides and how any one can think Milmow's piece is going to contribute to finding a positive way forward is beyond me.

An open and frank conversation behind closed doors I would have thought would be far more productive.

I don't think that anyone believes that piece was dedicated towards the DP & WPFC doing a hug-and-share-and-cry routine.  The paper is essentially saying, "If you think we're being hard on you now, just imagine our articles without any comments from the club."

The "positive way forward" for the Dominion Post is that the Phoenix do as they're told.

The Dom Post's arrogance is incredible. This is so obviously a power trip - 'how DARE you not give me an interview?'

A newspaper has the right to publish stories on pretty much any topic, and they have the right to criticise whoever they want short of defamation... but one thing they don't have is the right to interview someone who doesn't want to be interviewed.

It's the one thing they know they don't have automatic access to, so it drives them crazy when they can't get it.

Well, this will help the DP if they want to do a follow-up on the Yellow Fever getting too big for their boots.

For lack of anything better to do at work on a Saturday morning (curse you Japan), I felt the need to vomit opinion all up in Stuff's feedback system:

"Just felt the need to give my two cents regarding the "Time for Wellington Phoenix to look in mirror" article by Jonathan Millmow published on 27/11/2010. As there was no space for comments on the online article I'm doing so through here.

First of all (as I'm sure you're aware), a great range of opinions on the article (some intelligent, others not quite so) are available in a forum topic dedicated to it on the Yellow Fever website.

As far as I'm personally concerned, while being miffed at the team deciding to take a No Comment approach suddenly is warranted, writing an article on it (regardless of how fairly it is worded) is right up the street of the so-called "negative attitude" they're talking about. Though I think a better word for it would be "destructive attitude".

Reporting "without fear or favour" is a noble mission statement, but in the end I'm sure you're aware that what a publication chooses to report on and what not to, what language it chooses to use, inherently contain bias. There's no such thing as a neutral press, despite anyone's best efforts.

Trying to get to the point as I realise it's going to get a bit lengthy, but at times the points The Dom Post has chosen to highlight or the people whose comments you choose to print on a subject, for me, have been a bit beside the point or skewing the feel of a story.
eg.
-How is asking (and reporting the response of) Leo Bertos about Terry's situation valid? Why should he or Chris Greenacre be fully informed of the financial workings of the club? Saying "Bertos isn't sure if his paycheck's gone through" only provides speculation that makes any reader jump to the conclusion that he PROBABLY hasn't been paid. While trying not to resort to name-calling, it just feels a bit like a tabloid gimmick.
- The reporting on Herbert dropping Simon Elliot from the squad for 1 game again felt like it was asserting more than was necessary of straight news. I think the phrase "fell out of favour" was used at some point - again, language that conjures up imagery of Ricki personally unhappy with Elliot. The fact that much talk has been made of how Herbert probably needs to shuffle things around in response to the recent poor results was never paired with the talk of dropping Elliot, adding to the assertion that his dropping was some scandalous mystery.

The Dom Post have indeed written a lot of great articles about the Phoenix, both when they're winning and when they're not (though the jibes about the crowd size were a bit biased, especially when not much was made of the Lion's dwindling crowds of late). It's just at times the spin, how an article reads to the average joe, does get a vibe of "the Nix are doomed to failure", something which none of the fan club nor team believe, and a vibe that does nothing but greet those who may well become supporters in the future with the warning "don't waste your time". At least that's how it feels, and while the line taken by the Phoenix is hardly deserving of any medals either, I can relate to their sentiment."

In the end it's kinda pointless and I missed out a bunch of disclaimers for the sake of brevity, but damnit why should Millmow be the only one who can spout BS

Nice use of assumption.

Do you know there are any issues with sponsors ?  Last time I checked Revera and Export 33 have both come on since then ?

Also, you assume that this is the clubs policy regarding the DomPost, I would say that the fact that Ricki and Co have been in the paper that perhaps this is a decision by individuals or the player group and not official policy of the club.

Tony did a great job for us but at this stage I'm seeing nothing to say that Nathan has dropped the ball in any place (within his control) and I was one of those cynical about his appointment.

How's my driving? - Whine here

 Agree with the above.
The distinction between the DP's criticism of the on-field Nix performances and the DP's coverage of Terrys affairs is everything, imo.

No problem with the sports reporting. Fred was fine..Sam does a good job, as far as Ive seen in the past.Haven't seen lately as I chose to do without the DP, as others here have.

Millmow's petulant opinion piece however seems to have spawned from a place near the lair inhabited by Messrs Kitchin and Burgess,...a  place bathed in the sanctimonious light of journalistic integrity, hard work and pursuit of the truth ...undoubtedly.

I agree with Hard News. What makes Millmow's whinge all the more annoying is that it appears to motivated by not much more than some of the players simply declining interviews this week (and/or being sick of being asked about Terry's finances). Big deal, so your Phoenix story didn't write itself for once.

Sure, it's very nice if the Phoenix are cooperating with the press and giving them lots of access and information. But I thought this was a professional news organization? Write about the news. Don't turn your relationship with that organisation into the news.

I cancelled the Dom Post when they gave appalling pre match coverage to the All Whites game. It is quite clear they don't give a toss about football.

And my experience is that local papers have a natural disposition to be supportive of the local team -the likes of the Ipswich Express and Norwich chronicle (names made up) will always tend to have blue/yellow tinted glasses on. This isn't the case for Dom P. That's the way it is, they see themselves as some higher being that reports "without fear or favour". Let them have that dream.

In the meantime, what jolly wee chants will we have for the Dom Post tonight?

I know, I know, its serious!
