In fairness to the reporter, he didn't write the headline. It may well have been someone who didn't see the match and took grabbed the one line and went with it, I don't know.
Putting aside my Herald hat, it seems all media have a few more Nix stories at the moment. It's probably because it's the rugby and league off-season, but I'm enjoying having so many good football stories to read from everybody (but of course mainly from the Herald

Yeah it's the sub-editors that write the headlines if it's not a major story. They're usually newbs and fairly clueless from what I've been told by a couple of people I used to know who worked for various papers,
Not necessarily. As far as I'm aware they are mainly ex-reporters with years of experience, although they may still sub stories about subjects they know little about. But others have little background in reporting. It probably differs between newsrooms.
