Aussie u17 - coach Alistair Edwards

Aussie u20 - coach Paul Okon

Aussie u23 - coach Aurelio Vidmar

These are the current Aussie age group coaches. Edwards is now in charge of the Glory, Okon is heavily linked with the Adelaide job. So that leaves Vidmar if you want someone that knows the current Aussie youth players. Previous to those appointments Jan Versleijen was in charge of the u17 & u20 from memory.

Postacoglou was in charge of the U20s for 7 years 2000-2007 and they never did great. 2009 he signs for Brisbane and boom.

I would also ask that what proportion of those U23 players are based overseas and signed already? What does Vidmar then bring to the table in the form of being able to attract Aussie talent?

I'm not sure how I feel about Aurelio if he threw his name in the hat.

I never liked Vidmar. Maybe it's just the name, sounds like a vampire.

Most of the u23 squad are established A-League players and couldn't even score a goal in their failed 2012 Olympic qualifying campaign. Vidmar might have something to prove after that maybe?

If we wanted someone who knows the Aussie talent pool, Okon would probably the one to look at.He is quite highly rated by Aussie football people.

Not suggesting we should try for Okon or Vidmar, but these are the guys who were in the positions Ange & Arnold were before taking up their A-League gigs.

You would imagine that some one like Vidmar who has extensive A-League and Oz youth coaching experiance MUST have a fairly good handle on what players might be available for him to bring to a club if he became manager. As an Oz age group coach he must be getting the gossip from a network of local coaches regarding potential talent....it would be part of his job. He certainly would have better knowledge of potential local recruits than say someone from Europe(not that I would have anything against a European coach)
It is interesting to note that the current trend in the A-League is to appoint local coaches. It is also intertesting to note the success of the "new breed" coming through. Guys who have had a background as assistants are now starting to make their mark. Edwards at Perth has turned around a train smash of a season. 4 wins out of six and they are playing much better football than under Ferguesson. I thought they were really unlucky in the playoffs against Melbourne V. Same with Mulvey at the Roar. He took a little while to adjust but he too turned their season around and they are a good shot at making the Grand final. Also Popovich at WSW came virtually out of nowhere.
Again I have no particular preference about where our new coach comes from but certainly if you get an Aussie you can guarantee that they will already be well adjusted to the unique aspects of the A-League....long international  travel, salary cap, import restrictions, finals playoffs, summer season etc.
It all really comes down to getting the right person....if they are good enough then  where they come from should be irrelevant. However I believe in the short term a non Oz coach would struggle a bit on the recruitment front. They will probably be able to get only one new import and then have to find possibly up to six players form Oz/NZ. Tough ask for someone new to the region . He would have to rely on Gould and Greenacre, if they are still at the club....and neither of them have much experiance at  recruiting.

As an aside when are we going to hear from Ricki about his reasons for "resigning"?  I'm surprised no-one has chased the story it would be a pretty good scoop for someone.  Doesn't reflect that well on him that he hasn't even thanked the club and the fans for a pretty generous send off

I think this might have something to do with the "technical football advisor" role Ricki took up. Welnix are paying him a little bit of money on the side to do this essentially meaningless job, which in turn keeps him quiet about his time at the Nix. Quite an astute little bit of business from Welnix's perspective.

Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with that.  But even if it did I don't understand why no-one is keen to hear why he resigned out of the blue mid-season.  I'm really interested to hear from him actually, I'd like to know his perspective on what went on

We all know RH won't be getting anywhere near the Wellington Phoenix again.  He's not being paid to do anything, they decided to preserve his dignity and give him some meaningless title.  Are you suggesting he has some sort of confidentiality arrangement?

When Russell is finished washing, drying Ironing folding and putting away all the kit, he is going to write a new book, "The Life and Times Trials and Tribulations of an A League Kit Man"  It will include a final section written by Ricki giving his full side of the Story.  Is due to go on sale at $34.95 at Ryos in around 6 weeks times. Should be a fascinating read.

I don't think there will be any until the new coach is announced. And that is probably the way it should be.

Couldn't they have a reporter sitting outside the interview venue letting us know who's getting seen?!

The interviews may not neccesarily be taking place in person. My bet is that they are doing the majority of the overseas applicants over video conference.

Umm Jeff, the correct hashtag is #NorfolkClucks4Nix

How are we meant to get this trending if you keep making these simple mistakes?

Hopefully that means Okon will have put his name in for the Nix job. Not saying we should hire him, but he is a highly rated Aussie based candidate.
