Where does this leave #NorfolkClucks4Nix ??

Pro football is a cut-throat game.

Lee Norfolk will be doing a press conference outside KFC in order to distance himself from this cooked chook of a candidate.

I can't believe that once again the club is not using the interest in this process to get some positive attention for the club.

Why not tell the dompost (for example) - we're interviewing 5 candidates, 1 is from overseas, none is NZer but there is a clear favourite.

That gives away almost nothing, but is the basis for an interesting story as opposed to where we are which is no-one knows anything so no-one has anything to talk about.  Fans speculate, the media gets more interest.  This is just PR 101, this doesn't even need a media manager, it just needs someone with a basic understanding of how to keep up interest in the team over the off season.

Good point. I could only conclude that there are four New Zealanders, one overseas applicant and they are all much of a muchness.

Oh that's a given. I can tell you that whom ever is signed, there will be people calling for him to be sacked before he arrives.

The simple fact is some people are never happy. Speaking of Steve-O....

As a former hack myself I couldn't agree more. They should be milking this to keep the club profile in the news.

Don't agree, rugby and league often get a lot of media coverage out of it. Why should football be the wallflower? We have to learn to get media coverage where-ever we can in a crowded sporting landscape. This is a big story, use it.

Sorry, perhaps I should make my perspective clearer.

For us in football, yes it's a big deal. For anyone else (and in NZ that's the majority including the scribes) it's a non event. Hence no coverage.

It's a  non event because there is currently no story.  Give them a story and it becomes an event, it's simple

Would need something like a media manager for that to happen.

Any indication of when we might have a new gaffer? I'm sick of waiting! Has Hugo Sanchez put his TV up on Mexican trademe or anything?

To be honest, it wouldn't matter if we had new players either. Billy Harris has told us that we need a new venue if we want to win. I just like the illusion that a new coach will make a difference.

In all seriousness though, I think a new coach with 2 or 3 signings could make a big difference. CCM and WSW aside, when we played well this season we looked as good as any other team in the comp. We just need the new coach to be able to get the best out of our squad.

Of course I'm willing to concede that this attitude of mine is purely misguided early preseason optimism....

new coach could well lift the current players attitudes and hopefully give them a lift to train harder and play more enthusiatstically - much like brining in an apparent star player like hernandez. The new coach will have to deal with a large number of the current squad but he will have at least 5/6 spots to fill with exisating players or new members.

At least the Sanchez thing has gained the Nix publicity all over the world. The ESPN and goal.com stories have been picked up far and wide.

This is what they're saying in Indonesia: http://soccer.sindonews.com/read/2013/03/15/59/727666/wellington-phoenix-incar-hugo-sanchez

"Namun, seperti dilansir ESPN, calon pelatih Wellington Phoenix adalah legenda Real Madrid, Hugo Sanchez. Kebetulan, pria berumur 54 tahun itu sedang tidak melatih klub lain setelah menukangi Pachuca tahun 2012."

Exactly!

Hundreds of references in Spanish of course: Search "Hugo Sánchez, candidato para dirigir al Wellington Phoenix"

https://www.google.co.nz/webhp?sourceid=toolbar-instant&hl=en&ion=1&qscrl=1&rlz=1T4GGHP_enNZ433NZ433#q=Hugo+S%C3%A1nchez,+candidato+para+dirigir+al+wellington+phoenix&hl=en&qscrl=1&rlz=1T4GGHP_enNZ433NZ433&ei=TvNrUZ7vH4n2iQLplYGgCQ&start=0&sa=N&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&fp=f2b169560604df12&ion=1&biw=1099&bih=497

This English language posting on a Russian football website features the worst English and so is quite amusing. They have a hazy idea of geography and think the Phoenix are an English team! Also they seem to have a thing about "physical education instructors" in Russia and I like "meddlesome empty Wellington Phoenix conduct coaching post":

http://soccer-picks.net/mexico-legend-hugo-sanchez-in-running-for-wellington-phoenix-role-25005.html

Home / English Football / MEXICO LEGEND HUGO SANCHEZ IN RUNNING FOR WELLINGTON PHOENIX ROLE

"Former Real Madrid genius as good as ex-Mexico physical education instructor Hugo Sanchez is reportedly penetrating upon apropos Wellington Phoenix’s latest coach.

Legendary former Real Madrid as good as Mexico striker Hugo Sanchez is believed to be meddlesome empty Wellington Phoenix conduct coaching post.

A day after halt physical education instructor Chris Greenacre ruled himself out of requesting for a role, Sanchez has emerged as a claimant to fill a upon all sides combined by Ricki Herbert’s abdication upon Feb. 26.

Sanchez’s festive personification career enclosed 207 goals in 287 appearances for La Liga hulk Real Madrid, as good as stints with city opposition Atletico Madrid as good as multiform clubs in his homeland.

The European Golden Boot leader in 1989-90, he incited to government after his personification

retirement, spending time during a helm of a Mexico inhabitant group as good as then-La Liga bar Almeria.

Sanchez’s final purpose was a reduced army with Mexican outfit Pachuca, which finished in November.

Goal Australia understands Australian-based group ETI Sports Management have been doing Sanchez’s A-League interests.

Wellington Phoenix ubiquitous physical education instructor David Dome declined to endorse if Sanchez had practical for a role, saying which a routine to fill a upon all sides would be confidential.

A impression well known for his eccentricities as good as volatility, a 54-year-old has yet valid his coaching eagerness by winning titles in Mexico as good as saving Almeria from relegation from La Liga in a 2009-10 campaign.

Sanchez is a single of a highest-profile names related to a Phoenix role, with a likes of rarely rated Central Coast Mariners partner physical education instructor Phil Moss additionally believed to be in a running."

Sanchez Wants the Challenge
Published March 15, 2013 | By Adam Howard
OS Aussies is able to confirm that one of the candidates for the Wellington Phoenix coaching position is former Real Madrid and Mexico international striker, Hugo Sanchez.

The man voted the 26th greatest player of all-time, has enjoyed some success coaching at club level in his native Mexico, winning the Apertura and Clausara with Pumas de la UNAM in the Mexican Primera Dvision. The former Madrid star known as Pentapichichi, also had an 18 month stint as Mexican national team coach.

The Australian agent handling the deal, Tony Belica of ETI Sport Management told OS Aussies exclusively,

“Hugo sees this as a challenge. It is unchartered territory for him that he wants to conquer.

“He believes it is a good challenge for any experienced coach.”

The asking price for Hugo Sanchez is thought to be a little higher than an average A-League coach, which is to be expected from a big-name coach, but is said to be up for negotiation.

The 54 year-old has a 34.18% winning record in coaching and prefers to play a 4-2-3-1 formation which is similar to the Australian national team.

If Sanchez gets the job he’ll become the only foreign coach in the league currently, with Adelaide and Perth yet to confirm their coaches for next season.

Just for the sake of keeping things bubbling I would suggest that if Hugo S is not appointed as the new manager, and whoever the new guy is doesn't succeed in Nix making next year's play-offs, then Nix management and Nix supporters may end up kicking themselves for seasons to come. The guy is a legend, and not only amongst the Spanish speaking world football fraternity. Nix would instantly gain worldwide credibility with all the benefits this would accrue in terms of overseas player interest, promotional possibilities, merchandising, etc.  And the guy CAN manage - check out his Wiki CV - even if he hasn't been all that successful of late. It's not as though he's a brown David Beckham, superstar player but unproven as manager. And he comes a lot cheaper. Possibly not as cheap as Lee Norfolk, but hey, think of the buzz.

I have never heard of Hugo Sanchez until his name popped up here so to me, he is a Neville Nobody.

When I look at his record, he hasn't coached any big name clubs and his record doesn't go 'ooohhh pick him' so unless he survives the interview process as the best candidate, then I wont be making the prediction you have sir.

Then again, Kosta left here doing nothing and was a star at Brisbane so football does show itself to be an unpredictable one.

Hugo Sanchez was a Real Madrid goalscoring superstar, the Christiano Ronaldo of his day, the first Mexican to hit the European bigtime. To the Spanish speaking world he's as big a name as D Beckham to us Anglos. This could be put to use off the pitch in ways that could benefit the Nix immensely, e.g. as I've posted above. Plus possible/probable invitations to tour the club in Central & South America, even Spain.

so just cos you've never heard of him - he's a neville nobody, his playing career is pretty decent, better than anyone who's on the current coaching roster at least. On that alone he's got to be worth a look. Given his coaching record I'd wager he was worth a crack.
