300 candidates and the best we could do was Merrick.

Sorry. Will really stop moaning now.

I think the A-league is so different to many other leagues around the world, with very little transfer money, that a coach with a record in the A-league was always going to be the best bet. I reserve my judgement on whether he will be a success but he is a good pick.

No idea whether that is about the coaching appointment (he applied) but it coincided with the announcement time.

If he is referring to the Merrick appointment then he's just proved with one tweet why he's not ready to be an A-League coach

Miron?  He is a bit of a maverick, and while football is his passion he has other things he can do for a living. Heck, he was even a fully fledged colonel (or equivalent) in Israeli Navy, which is not a bad thing when it comes to enforcing discipline among the unruly players:-)   My main concern with him would be that he is what you would call "mercurial". Ricki may have his faults, but being fickle and temperamental ain't it. Miron may stick around for a season but would be itching to do something else soon after that.

My own preference would be Ernie Merrick. He has just finished his stint as the national coach of Hong Kong (late October last year) and I am not aware of him signing anywhere else at the moment. Superb tactician, and similar in temperament to Ricki Herbert - reserved, quiet, not flashy, and always respected by the players. May not agree to work with Ricki as Director of Football and him as a coach, but you never know. If Rickipromised not to meddle in tactics, we may be on to a winner. And Wellington is closer to Melbourne than Honkers.

And there we have the winner.

There first one in this thread that posted pushing Merrick.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

Yeah, kind of negated by mentioning Miron first though!

It sounds like it was just an unfortunate coincidence. He has now congratulated Merrick and talks about decisions regarding pitch problems.

Excited by the new coach... yeah nah

Kind of feel let down by the owners, they talked up over 300 applicants, coaches with experience in Europe etc etc and then give us Merrick.... in the end the whole process was nothing but a 3 month cock tease.

He will need to make a couple strong signings between now and the season proper to get some momentum and fan confidence behind him.

Good luck Merrick.

I've got a question for those unhappy about the hiring.

Are you disappointed because you don't like Merrick as a coach (and subsequently think he'll do a bad job) or because we were rumoured to have better replacements, yet settled on Merrick?

This may have been asked before but I can't be arsed reading 20 most-likely depressing pages.

Yes, looks like Chris was referring to local pitches and funding problems around the sport in Aucks, rather than about Merrick being appointed

His timing is brilliant! Sam Worthington will probably turn it into "local coaching community outraged at Merrick appointment" anyway.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Finals = Top Six? If so, not having that goal would be pretty piss poor.

Getting in a coach who has not only made the finals but won the competition doesn't help our aim of finishing in the top 6?

Can't say I see how that logic works.

As a goal, it was dismissed last season

maybe that was the problem, tried to run before we could walk because "on paper it was our best squad yet".

In before someone points it out... I did say it was 100% not Ernie Merrick but that is what I was told when i asked my source "is it Merrick?" after he said he saw the guy being shown around the stadium. #badsauce I just hope the players respond to the new coach well and we develop a winning culture. Think that's where it went stale with Herbert. A few new signings should help that.  I also think that Merrick may not have been the first person offered the job. Every possibility that they had one or two (or even a handful) of applicants that didn't work out for whatever reason. Could explain the delays too. Either way I'm sure next season will give us more to cheer about than the last.

Glad to have a coach in place now. Not the "wow" factor to grab the non-phoenix public attention but is a stable and soild pick with good history, not likey to turn the nix into a freak show.

Not sure what more of a "wow" factor could grab the non-phoenix public attention to be honest. At least the media are portraying him as the Leagues most successful coach ever. Plenty of wow for Joe Average i reckon. I think its a good signing. Im happy
