What coaching qualifications does Coppel have, Crawely does appear to be a well run club that had moved forward in recent years. Not a bad sign if he's played a role in this.

If he apologises Ill buy him a beer :)

Steve Coppell? Currently Director of Football at Crawley Town but he's never coached outside the UK as far as I know.

Mentioned by Telfer as a name he'd heard.

If Telfer said it we can count him out.

Possibly

Probably being spruiked by one of the 82 old guard who he gives so much airtime to.

A: it's Telfar. Considering his chat with Smithy, he is in negative figures for football credibility.

B: Coppell would command a bomb. Considering he has left teams because of lack of funds, no stadium plan and no promotion in this league, why would he come here?

C: he would be a fantastic coach to get a hold of but most our squad is decided. I hope this had been pointed out to our next manager so they know what they are getting into

This topic thread is so much fun I am kind of sad the club will eventually appoint a new gaffer and the thread will come to an end.

Crikey - Steve Coppell! As a Crystal Palace fan from way back I have a great fondness for Coppell. He took Palace to within a few minutes of beating Man U in the FA Cup final, won the club promotion to the old first division and finished third if I recall rightly. A legend at Selhurst Park. It would be quite amazing to see him coaching the Phoenix.

Is there really any truth to this rumour?

Interesting to see he has Man City (Same time as Greenie) and Tranmere rovers connections.

I can't believe I've managed to start a serious rumour re: Steve Coppell!

I always loved him as a player.

Surely he  has better options than the Nix?

On the other hand, he's currently a DoF at a League One club, which is a bit meh. He's also the kind of guy who I think has quite a worldly and intelligent perspective on things (I'm pretty sure he has a degree in Economics). He supposedly retired from football mgmt citing lack of passion for it and he has been critical of foreign owners at the top levels of English football. Maybe the idea of coaching a club on the other side of the world appeals to him as a way to get back into management but without the intense pressure and bullshit that comes with the top flight in the UK?

No promotion/relegation, an emphasis on playing style and player development. It might be attractive for someone who is slightly disillusioned with how money has affected the english game.

Could lead to some interesting clashes with Uncle Gareth if their opinions on economic theory don't line up

I'm sorry.  Could you explain the connection between "intelligent perspective" and a degree in Economics?

Like Keegan, Coppell bottled it when the times get tough. Ask Reading fans, and surely Palace fans must remember the 2nd coming...and going? Bristol City fans can also testify to this.

Hmm, I've been doing a bit of research into this and the internet seems confused about whether he has a degree in economics, economic history or economics and social history. He got it from Liverpool University anyway.

All joking aside it's obvious he is regarded as one of the smarter people in football in the UK, but also something of an enigma.

Close J82. T.V ' s  portable hotspot is on the blink so he's on hold waiting for mobile faults, while JV got a bit angry with the rep who promptly transferred him to the far queue.........an overseas call centre, I believe....

Fantastic player I was gutted when he hung his boots due to injury even if he was a Manu player.

He has struggled with the stress that media attention brings to the job of manager.

Is Crawley a bigger club than Phoenix? - probably not, would he want to risk the stress by being in a more high profile role in an envirnoment he does not know??

Can't see it myself.

It's quite obvious that you didn't attend many classes there as it is spelt "Woolloomooloo".

You sure your Degree is real or was it offered to you cheap via someones email in Nigeria?
