So, the game in Christchurch is against Perth on November 9.

Question #1: what part of the ground should we sit in?

Here is a map.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Question #2: Where do people go out in Christchurch these days?

(This goes to the next question which will be: what part of town should we stay in?)

As per last seasons warm-up game in chch, Speights Ale House at Tower Junction is probably the only real pre-game candidate.

In terms of a night life, I'd suggest Merivale is probably the only "cluster" of pubs you could fashion a night out at.  Just ask Jesse Ryder.  There are also heaps of motels in and around Merivale, anything on Papanui road is walkable to Merivale, and, depending on your fitness, Bealey ave.

Can I suggest an Ahmad-style block booking for YF?  Last years game was a shambles in terms of a fever zone.  Ticketek nominated a fever zone but in reality it was no different to any other section of the grandstand.

Oh, and sections 3 - 10 are on the sunny side of the ground so I'd go for that

Good information.  Thanks.

Definantly need an Ahmad style booking. I got hurled some pretty nasty abuse last year to attempting to stand.

When I went down to Chch for the All Whites game the Speights Ale House was a disgrace. Having to wait 20-30 minutes for a drink is not much fun and the staff were rude and generally seem disinterested.

This.   I had liaised with them prior to the game and they seemed real keen to get on board but when we arrived they were less than helpful.

End of an era.  Vinnie - It's over.

I agree that the Speights in Tower Junction is a bit slack.

That's what happens with no real competition in that wasteland that is Tower Junction.

If the weather is good one could almost consider a walk to the ground all the way from Riccarton, where there are more bars to consider.

A  bit of a long walk down Clarence St to the ground afterwards - it all depends what your idea of a long walk after a couple of cold ones is.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Points taken re: Ale House service etc, but with a lack of any suitable alternatives we might be stuck between a rock and a hard place?  Has anything of any size opened up down Lincoln Rd recently?

Robbies Riccarton is the 'Home of Football' in Christchurch. I'm taking over from Tim Madden this year with the organisation of the Christchurch fan club. Looking at basing ourselves at Robbies.

Riccarton to AMI stadium is a 20 minute walk straight down Clarence St. Get everyone together and march to the stadium?

Permalink Permalink

get them to make 27-37 standing (ie: non family zone) - we ended up there last year with a few of the welly faithful and it was solid!

If Speights Ale House is a no go then something like Robbies or the Fox and Ferret would be good. Easy walk to the stadium from there.

For those looking for a night life there are pubs in Merivale, Riccarton and Lincoln Road that tend to get a few people going. There will probably be a few more places central city by then as well.

Could be worth looking down Lincoln Road as well as that is close

I'll be there, as it is often faster to walk that way than to drive, especially pre-game if the usual turnout is expected.

Agree ,very disappointing attitude from the pub ,it was a football World Cup qualifier after all and they didn't even have any football on the numerous telly screens just what looked like 2nd 15 college rugby!staff grumpy as well which was pretty average considering the pub probably had 85+ percent more people in it than it would normally  !
After the game Christchurch was closed apart from the casino ,it was midweek though so hopefully be a bit better this time !

The answer to life's problems are rarely found at the bottom of a beer glass - but it's always worth a look.

I've booked my flights! I agree with gings with the fever zone. 27-37 was a good spot.

Was that behind the goal?

We did this for Heart in Dunedin in March, worked bloody well. We had Nixie and a band and was really good.

Update:

Fever Zone will prob be behind the goal.

Like the march to the match idea. Will suss that out with the Nix.

Western stand is completely uncovered and very close to the pitch. Quite small but was pretty good last time.

its not the fanciest stand, but its one where the families mostly wont be, and there was four fifths of security around there too - they let us stand and get rowdy. 27-37 for standing

Given our direct engagement with venue management I don't anticipate standing being a problem this time. Wherever we are.

Hey guys, Thundersticks has just been in contact with me and said she is passing my details on to stadium management to help with promotion of the game and organising the Christchurch Fan club for the match ect. Should I mention that the Fever are keen on the Western Stand and possibly ask about group bookings?

Permalink Permalink

on ya lee, may I suggest to everyone one of the ends of each part of the ground. Last years pre-season we ended up heading down to where seats 34 etc are placed. Its very close to the pitch, however the only real problem is you dont get a side view. The only real problem with the side stands is that you're always going to have families, part time fans and 'drunks' coming (especially due to it being a one off event) who don't understand the concept of the yellow army. plus the inconvenient placement of the support beams can block the views of some viewers. As for a place to drink, I would recommend Robbie's Riccarton, always a friendly place and not too far from the stadium. If you get bored of Robbie's then you can head across to the other bars/restaurants which are all in a 100m radius.

Ask about group bookings, but I believe that the Fever is in direct contact with VBase so you shouldn't need to do too much to do with telling them where we are going to sit etc. Think Smithy has that under control.

Damn support beams and their holding-up-the-roof ways.  How dare they??!!

Smithy, Turlough just gave me a ring about the match and to get an update about how the Christchurch Fan base is going.
He said he's been trying to get in touch with you and if you could drop him a line that'll be great.

Also for pre and post match drinks I'm about to talk to a bloke who's opening up a bar at Riccarton raceway who sounds very keen on hosting the Christchurch supporters group this season. Literally 5 minutes walk from AMI stadium. Could be a good watering spot.

Well, he hasn't emailed me since June 24th. That would have been a good place to start.

I've been on holiday, so he may have called me. But my voicemail says I'm away.

So, in summary I call bullshit.

I will flick him an email now though.

So. Having spoken to Turlough we are confirmed at the EASTERN end of the ground in the stand there.

The western stand he originally had us in is being used for corporate hospo.

Next step - find a bar. Sackofspuds I'll be down during August...shall we catch up for a pint and if you've had preliminary chats with some bloke opening a bar then let's flesh that out...drop me an email: smithy@yellowfever.co.nz

Think you mean Addington Raceway, also if that falls through  -if looking for a bar, after bad experiences at Speights Ale House suggest you consider Lincoln Rd which has a large amount of Bars only 5minutes walk away from the ground - namely - "Pedal Pusher", "Morrell & Co", "the Miller Bar" also "Sullivan"s irish bar that used to be in town is opening at the old Bedrock bar site any week now, - these are all  closer than Robbies in Riccarton.

Whoops yeah I meant Addington. I'm meeting up with the guy on Tuesday for a chat. Sounds like they are very keen to host the Christchurch Supporters club on a weekly basis and keen to host the November 9th festivities. Dropping ya an email now Smithy.

Official update.

Have just got off the phone with the VBase crew. They are all over this like white on rice, helped by the fact that Alice sounds like she knows every barman in Christchurch.

We're going to:

1. Lock down some accom for Fever to book.

2. Sort out a bar on Lincoln Road - there are a number of options. Liam - Thurloch is going to call you as it would be good to have you come along with us.

3. Possibly do a flight deal if Air NZ are willing.

There will also be some pre and post match awesomeness that I'll keep secret for now.

VBase = awesome to deal with. Gold star.
