In terms of hit outs, I do wonder if getting through to the next round is really all that great for us. Would it be better to have another FFA Cup fixture (given we will have to travel) or try and tee up a couple more over here before the start of the season?
If the club decides that they want to give a good account of themselves in the Cup and try getting through to later rounds then great, but if we are just treating these fixtures like warm ups for the league season, then is there much benefit in winning?
Of course it would be much better for us to get through and go on a cup run. We are still more than two months out from the season starting, that's a long time to be training week in week out with the odd friendly against a central league or Handy prem side. Are you seriously suggesting it would be better for the team to play friendly games against weak opposition for two months rather than in knockout games against much better opposition that actually mean something? What do you think would be better for the squad, a hit out at Weka Park against some amateur/semi-pro ensemble or a Ro16 or Quarter-final against another A-League team? The FFA cup games are still spread out anyway, it's not like the boys will be burnt out by the time we get to Round 1 if we go on a cup run, if anything it'll mean they're more ready to play together in competitive games. Plus in any case it is only the semi finals and finals that are remotely close to the season starting, with the final the only match played while the A-League is on. Maybe others see it differently like you, but the more competitive games we play against good opposition in what is a ludicrously long preseason, the better.
I suppose my comment was based around us seeming to treat the cup like a training exercise in the past. That may not have necessarily been the case, it has just felt that way. I therefore wondered if a one off game against an Aussie State side - where we might have played reserves and still have all the travel etc - would have been better than staying in camp and organising games here.
In saying that, I didn't realise it was only the final that was in-season. Never paid a whole lot of attention to the cup as the Nix have never seemed overly bothered by it (plus I'll likely never see a game live). According to the Marinovic interview, Talay wants a deep run in the
cup so hopefully they put out a strong side and do the business.
