New Zealand representatives Tony Lochhead, Tim Brown and Ben Sigmund have signed two-year contracts to remain in Wellington, while fans favourite Daniel has also committed to the Phoenix for a further two years. Playmaking midfielder Michael Ferrante has signed on for another season in the Hyundai A-League

Meanwhile, the Phoenix have parted company with Chinese midfielder Leilei Gao.

Pignata said the club had worked hard to help the Gao settle in.

As a club we did everything in our power to accommodate his needs. However, it got to the point where it was clear to us that we could no longer work with him and it was decided to let him go to pursue other opportunities.

 for me tipping Gao as one of the signings of the year in my pre-season predictions.

Gao didn't look the part - had a few glimses of talent but good luck to him elsewhere. Daniel might get some more game time now he's moved on.  Pleased to see those 5 re-sign - strong players who always look like they want to be here. Good news.

I think NZ citizenship is 5 years, so would need an extra year after those 2

i was under the impression it was four but i thought they had some special deal or something for sports people who want to be in an NZ team approved by the coach of the NZ team or wahteva

I think it doesn't matter FIFA set their own rules im pretty sure, so a government can't just fast-track a player, HN would probably know this for sure.

He might have the same grandmother as Nathan Fein, that would speed it up

I'm fairly sure the FIFA rule is they just have to be a citizen, no set time-frame which is why top European clubs where citizenship takes 5 years send players who can't get work permits to places like Belgium where it takes 3.

I always thought it was 3 years in NZ, but it could be 4...

Actually I don't.

I have asked a number of people and getting a definite answer is a nightmare.

Good news is we now have friends in high places now.

Hope they do... Ferguson would kill him in North Queensland and Newcastle deserve his whining Prima-donna displays.

Great News! Especially Daniel and Lochead. Two very quality players who I hope we see more from this season and beyond.

Credit to Feverish and Wilso for the image.  They had it done pre-election, but we decided at that point it was too much of a political maelstrom to use it.

Now however...

I was going to chip and say f**k off to Gao, but I'm totally focused on the players we have left.

in regards to Residence..it really depends, there are several categories. I think it's at least 3 years if you're working..or perhaps he should marry a kiwi chick [whistles and acts as if he didn't know anything]..that will speed it up!!
However, there is always a special clause for professional sportsmen...so i'm sure it could be done pretty quickly.
Think how cool if we played out WC qualifier playoff at the RoF with our beloved Daniel on the pitch...

Full credit to all those who resigned. I'm very happy about the Sea Captain (Siggy), Locky-head, and of course DANIEL. I reckon Tim Brown might have ripped us off a little, given his form and age..but hey, he can be pretty useful at times

ahaahaha hey wtf do you expect from a bloody foreigner as myself! tell you a funny story. Was at a work bbq a couple of months ago and wanted to put some more sausages to cook so I asked my boss if he could pass me his thong instead of thongs..thank God we're on familiar terms.

Besides, he didn't seem to mind. Should I be worried?

Anyway, WE LOVE YOU DANIEL. It takes a man to turn down more lucrative contracts abroad and stick with a team where he's not even a regular starter (this season).

Finally some good news on the re-signing front. We now have a core of a team to work around.

Especially pleased to see Daniel sign. Thought he might be on his way out after sitting on the bench recently. Got to love the guy.......committed to the club and the city even though he knew he probably had an excellent chance of a good contract with one of the other new A-League clubs. We need more players like him in the Phoenix. Sure hope he has a chance to play his way back into the starting lineup.

So who is left....Coveny, Johnson, Muscat, Kwasnik all come of contract at the end of this season. Chances are we will see none of them next year in a Phoenix shirt.

He was a Knights player... a much better player for them than for the Phoenix.

as for Daniel.............

First of all he needs to apply for residence of NZ as I think he is
still on a work permit, he would qualify under the special International
sports player programme, and then once he has residence, he needs to
wait for 5 years from the date his residence is granted, at present it
is around 6-12 months processing, but am sure that his would get done
faster, and then he can get citizenship after 5 years, so it depends on
whether FIFA will require him to have residence or citizenship.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, however can grant citizenship in
extraordinary circumstances if he does not meet the 5 years. But he will
still need to have residence first, by Immigration.

I believe he could be granted residence some time next year and virtually citizenship soon afterwards (if Internal Affairs wish to help)
