further questions

- do all clubs have fan forums?

- when does the next season start?

- why isn't everyone happier we came third and beat 7 other teams?

1) Most A-league Clubs, if not all do.

2) July/August. Can't remember if they are starting earlier or ending later to accommodate the new team.'

3) Because if we came third it means there are 2 teams we didn't beat. No ones knocking the lads though - great season. Just a bit gutting to get so close.

Actually I think most people are VERY happy with coming third.

We are just grumpy because of the 2nd goal and the blatant dishonesty around it.

(PS Just for you Stefan - Sydney were the better side.

PPS But i still hate the f*ckers now)

World Cup build up for those in the squad(s)

Costa off to Roar.  Reddy & Caceres still to formally sign things/discuss with the club.

Ferrante & Mulli??

That goal AND people on here generally just love to complain  I remember on the live chat with Greenacre reading John Mitchell lament "You lot are never happy are you? "

I resent a lack of distinction being made around here between fair weather fans and fans from abroad/rest of the country who have to pay more than the price of a season ticket (in some cases) just to get to one game.  And obviously these individuals in question would rather go to a semi-final than a round 4 clash with the mighty Fury or whoever.

That rant has tired me out.  Thankyou.

Avoid the so called top four. Everyone goes for them and they are so predictable. Win, win, win. Look further down the table for a nice little boost to the blood pressure every Sunday morning. People pick their team for all kinds of reasons. Dad told me to, Neighbour comes from there. I like their shirts, etc.
One things for sure. NOW YOU'RE IN, YOU'RE IN FOR LIFE.

I don't see the attraction of EPL teams to be honest. Yeah, my Mum is English, and I've lived there myself, but it's not my football, like the Nix or the All Whites are.

Agreed.. I enjoy watching it (the EPL) too but could never find a team to "latch on to" as a supporter. I think it means more if the team is your local, no matter how woeful. Eg, my sister-in-law supports Ipswich passionately because thats her home town and she still lives near enough to Ipswich (actually Chelmsford which isn't that near) to get along to regular games. Thats dedication for you ( and suffering). But she reserves the right to complain about Ipswich to the cows come home but she still loves them.
Thats why the Phoenix are so important to the football-starved in New Zild.

Obviously if you have a local/geographical connection with a club it creates a connection that can be strong.  But that doesn't mean that others can't support teams that they have not been living close to (I was surprised to find out that Beckham travelled with his folks to Manchester from London every weekend to watch ManU).  Lots of NZers here support overseas teams but have probably not been to seen them live.  Doesn't make them any less of a fan.

My ties are geographic (Toon, Spurs, Nix) but there are also places that I have lived for a long time and feel no affinity for that would translate into supporting a team (ChCh, Palmy, Beijing).  Conversely I have never lived in Guangzhou but could quite easily support the team  if I had a) the money and b) the opportunity (e.g. was back in China for a spell).

However if your sister-in-law lives in Chelmsford I can fully understand why she would support Ipswich (Runwell/Basildon FTW)!

Hmm... doesn't make them any less of a fan if there is not connection with the town the club represents? It means something doesn't it?

I remember when Perennial strugglers Liverpool were in their prime and came down to visit Brighton for a league match (when we were in the top flight - sigh). There were definitely two sets of Perennial strugglers Liverpool fans - the travelling support from Perennial strugglers Liverpool and a smaller isolated group. Whenever the latter tried to sing, the Liverpudlians would drown them out with, "you're just one match a season" and "on your own, on your own." The Mancs I know also complain about the day-trippers turning up at Old Trafford. The fans of the clubs that attract those type of "supporters" hate the glory hunters just as much as the rest of us.

I had to laugh when talking to the husband of my wife's friend a while back. Perennial strugglers Liverpool fan. From Crewe. Why Perennial strugglers Liverpool? He can't produce an explanation (not wanting to state the real one - when he was a kid they won everything) and tried to bluster with supporting them through the hard times? Hard times? WTF - during his entire life, they've never finished lower than 8th and have only finished out of the top four seven times. What hard times is he talking about? Fine, take pride in that if you're a scouser and that club is representing you and your community - but don't kid anyone that it's anything but being a glory hunter who turned his back on the team representing his community because there wasn't enough glory for him.

If every football fan became one of those "fans", we'd have a league of just four teams and no other clubs at all. Doesn't make them less of a fan if there's no link to the club? Try telling that to a real fan of one of those clubs.

This is where I am at. I've been a football fan since I played as a kid, but never identified with a club. When I started watching the EPL a few years back I latched on to Perennial strugglers Liverpool, it was just after their Champions League win, but my interest in them has understandably wained. I don't identify with the team at all. My mum's from Leicester, but considering their games aren't televised it is hard to form a connection with them.

Then along come the Nix. I didn't really follow them closely for the first two seasons, but after the AW v Bahrain game I wanted to get involved. So the Yellow Fever made me a Nix fan. I wanted to be like you guys! Real supporters, through thick and thin. Like a family. Count me in. This OUR football and our team.

Yes of course it means something (I stated that at the beginning.  But there seems to be a setting of "criteria" for the in crowd  here.  Why would people support a club with no local connection?  Because they FEEL some connection.  That's exactly what is happening with the Nix (admittedly in the absence of other NZ A-League teams).

I guess this "I'm a local, you're not therefore you're not a real fan" arguement smacks of either elitism or xenophobia.  Take that to the end point:  Man U and Man City should have a fan base that equates to half of the greater Manchester area each (plus those Manc living in exile).

Thing is every football fan doesn't support just the big four.  Some even support more than one team that aren't.  Everyone has their own reason for forming a connection with a team.  It doesn't make them less of a fan as far asI'm concerned.

Quite. Sorry, I should have qualified my statement better. I was only talking from a personal perspective and wasn't inferring any judgement about other people's preferences.
My brother has been a  Perennial strugglers Liverpool supporter since the mid-1970s. He's never been to  Perennial strugglers Liverpool, ever. I don't consider that makes him worth less as a fan than an actual scouser.

Different things attract different people to a team and often its more than one thing. I'm not even a proper Wellingtonian having spent the last 14 years in Chch. And i was born in Auckland.

I think what i was trying to say was that for me it was the NZ connection that was important to me. Having been to games in the UK and seen the passion and camaraderie of the fans there, I decided that was what I wanted; a home side.

HA! It did again!! From now on I will have refer to them as the Liver-boys!

a team like Wycombe Wanderers could be considered f**king hopeless.
But being 5th in the EPL probably doesn't rate to the same level of retardedness.

That's because he's a gooner so has to make himself feel better by slagging off other teams.
