I believe Ifill is a better player than Fred, and must be kept at all costs.
Fred would definitely fill the central playmaking hole in our squad.
I don't think it has to be Fred though.I would be equally happy with us pinching McGlinchey off the mariners.

Honestly, I don't think we *need* Fred - he'd just be bloody nice to have in the team. So wont be too worried either way.
The current attack is still too one-dimensional, a central playmaker of Fred's quality would be the change from a good A-League team to an absolutely splendid one, right across the park.

Still haven't heard where we would put him and how he would fit in properly.
He can either play central and replace Lia/Brown in a 442 shape

                Lia/Brown
                            Fred
Ifill                                              Daniel/Bertos

               Costa       Greenacre
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or play wide in a 442

                        Lia                Brown
 Ifill                                                                  Fred

                 Costa        Greenacre
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or  in a 433

                       Lia                 Brown
                                 Fred

        Ifill                                            Costa/Daniel/Bertos
                          Greenacre

Yep, McKain better get fit and playing pretty quick cause he's rapidly dropping out of everyone's thinking (though maybe not Ricki's?)

not sure id be getting rid of lia too quickly...seems to me since he has been back in the side the midfield has hardened up big time..was impressed with a lot of his distribution on wednesday night specially considering the conditions and you gotta love his take no sh*t attitude...the  game on wednesday itself was well worth the trip from the naki and the consequent disappointment of missing a day or two off work...

thats my thinking too, but think without emotion. Sure theyve played good, and no they dont warrant beding dropped, but if Fred is better, then drop out whoever's position he takes on. Harsh, but thats the way football works.  And what depth we would have.

otherwise start him on the bench and get him to prove himself

The way we're playing I would start Fred on the bench ... But anthing could happen between now and when/if he puts pen to paper. Ifill could break a leg (please no), Lia could have a terrible drop in form. At the moment he would be on the bench and I'd be giving him half an hour to prove himself.

does replacing lia with fred give us a like for like swap...since vinnie has been there doing the donkey work the likes of ferrante didnt provide things have been moving ahead well....would fred not be a more likely replacement for the likes of leo daniel or brown and even then only after proving himself

If i was ricky i wouldn't drop anyone until we lose/someone dips out of form. We have 12/13 players who don't deserve to be dropped from that 15.

I don't understand why  we need fred when we are playing oh so well. Just seems to be one more attacking midfielder and we aren't short of them.. are we.

Our playing well (ie, winning games) is only recent, and the pursuit of Fred has probably been going on in some form for quite a while now. As others have pointed out an injury to Ifill will see us lose a lot of fire power.

Fred is a fantastic player. We should move mountains to get him here.

No one who's of a really simlar mould or quality though.

3 weeks ago everyone would've jumped at the chance to sign. I feel that while our players are delivering quality, from what I've seen and heard Fred can do even better than that. Why settle for good when you could have great? If the nix really want to push those playoff spots then this is an exciting signing opportunity. Well done Tony + Ricki

Why would you sign someone as a marquee and then put them straight on the bench? If they can't walk straight into the starting line up, they are not worth marquee dollars.

Fred would never replace Lia or Brown.....different positions different jobs.

It would be on one the front guys who would drop down...prob Daniel. which is real tough. Who would have thought that you would have leo and Daniel both on the bench.

One question I haven't seen addressed is: how good is his current form?

Ideally, a marquee player should be:
* A standout. (Hence the big bucks.)
* A crowd-puller.
* A genuine match winner.
How many of those boxes does Fred tick?

Just hope we're not viewing him with rose coloured glasses.

Though I do remember that Fred had a very good engine and was a pretty good tackler as well

I'd say 2 out 3. Crowd-puller is debatable but really the only marquee that pulls crowds is Fowler.

Old big nose hasn't done too much for GCU.  Not at all worried that we didn't get him (raged at the time, mind).  So logically if Fred shows up for another team he'll be very average so we needn't worry (don't ask me to justify my prediction).

Turning down a marquee spot can't be an easy decision unless he is going to one of the big three football leagues (EPL, La Liga or Series A) or otherwise its not worth . . .Unless some big time dough is thrown at him from the Japanese.

Yeah, I really hope this isn't another Porter situation. Not that the Porter situation ended up costing us much.

If we'd had Porter last season we would have made the play-offs at the least.

The Gulf leagues have some dough as well!
