Can someone tell me which game is fred's last game
Founder
From what I have been reading in an article in the Herald in Australia, there is a way we could have Fred for the rest of the season
If he was signed as our Marquee he would be able to play in all games the games we have left, including the finals series if we got that far.
This is something that Newcastle are looking at, either getting a marquee, or maybe changing Milligan who is a guest player, over to marquee status to allow him to stay on with them for the season including their champions League campaign.
A Marquee player can be signed on at any time apparently. As far as I am aware we dont have an official Marquee.
McKain.
Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet
Hadnt realised that, thanks for the info.
So this means that if Kewell or Viduka or Kennedy or Schwarzer return to play out their days in Aust, that they will only be able to do so as marquees, and that at any time there can only be a maximum of 8 well capped returning Aussies in the A League? Seems a bit wierd
Those players would fit a marquee spot and the requirements of a marquee but they could also be under the cap. Just like McKain for us. There are certain requirements a Marquee should meet (although these seem to be pretty relaxed) to be tagged as one and McKain just happens to fit them most tidily out of those in our squad.
That clearer ?

I'm getting there, and I like looking at things from different angles, so what is the answer to this?
At present we have 21 players and a guest in our permitted squad of 23. (hope I have that right)
I understand the salary cap is for 23 players, some will be paid more, some less but the total they are paid needs to be within the cap
At the end of Freds guest stint we will have only 21 players. If Mckains salary isnt so large and combined with the others it fits under the cap for 23 players, can he then be officially demarqued?
And would that then leave us with the option of picking up a marquee - Fred - for the rest of the season?
Pretty much. Guest players don't count towards either the salary cap or the squad.
I'm guessing it depends on the contract they have with McKain. If there's no de-marquee clause, it could be difficult to get him off marquee status (just because it would require a new contract and stuff. I think...

Yup. Iff McKain can get de-marqued though.
Fred, who was on a six-game contract with the Phoenix, flew back to Brazil following the sudden death of his father last week.
The midfield playmaker missed Saturday's 1-1 draw with Perth and will also miss tomorrow night's home clash with Central Coast and the December 28 trip to Queensland the last game of his six-game contract.
Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said fellow Brazilian Daniel had spoken with Fred, while the club was dealing with the player's agent.
"At this stage Fred's first and foremost thoughts are with his family, his mum and his brothers," Pignata said.
"I'm not expecting him back ... his contract ends at the Queensland game on the 28th and at this stage we're not expecting Fred back and we're okay with that decision."
Pignata said the "game by game" nature of Fred's contract meant the club was not paying for nothing and he didn't expect Fred to demand money for the games he missed.
"It wasn't as if we had to outlay a lot of money," he said.
"We haven't even sat down and spoken money and I'm pretty sure that he's not going to come back to us and say `well hang on, I should be getting this and that'."
Pignata said Fred had "loved" his time in Wellington and was hopeful of a return next season. "I'm not sure in what capacity, whether it's fulltime or another guest appearance, but I'm pretty sure he'd love to come back," he said.
The Phoenix are also in contract negotiations with goalkeeper Mark Paston this week and continue to search for strikers in preparation for Shane Smeltz's move to the Gold Coast next season.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

hopefully he might feel slightly obliged to come back after leaving us. Bit of guilt if we just miss out on playoffs haha

Just like he felt obliged to go back to Victree on his return to the A-league.
