How's this helping NZ football?

Bluemagic, the Team Wellington vs Auckalnd City match on 14 Nov didn't attract heaps of spectators was because it was deemed to be a low quality and boring game.

You won't get much better in terms of quality in NZ football outside of the Phoenix. Perhaps we should just abandon the National League and have nothing if no one is going to turn up.

Three for me, and two for them.

I'm giving you ideas and trying to get you to think about them. I'm not saying I'm right, I'm trying to make you think from a different point of view about something big and important. And it is not all bullsh*t, bollocks and all the other crap you've thrown at me!

I think that's a bit unfair actually, as well as being a bit condescending. If you have been copping abuse you've only got yourself to blame.

Yes, this was a topic worth discussing and yes, you have made some good points, but you haven't helped yourself by being so damned dogmatic.

In amongst the "bullsh*t, bollocks and all the other crap" there have been plenty of other excellent points made but you have largely chosen to ignore or side-step them. Instead you seem to prefer butting heads where you think you can score some cheap points and stick to your rather narrowly defined agenda. And when you're really struggling you throw out some emotional, heart on the sleeve stuff about sticking up for the underdog blah blah. Perhaps as a journalist you picked up some tips from Winston Peters who has a similar M.O.?

Anyway, I've enjoyed this debate but like you I'm over it now. All the best to everyone at ACFC and if things pan out like I hope we'll see you in the A-League in a few years time - both chasing those ACL spots with 6 or 7 Kiwis on each side!

Nobody said that playing New Zealand players would turn people off. Don't be rediculous. But if we started picking most of the starting 11 based on nationality instead of form and quality, then I don't think we'd be all that successful. We wouldn't meet the expectations of the owner (who has helped NZ football enormously), let alone the expectations of New Zealand football fans / general public.

I say lock the thread, as term said he made some reasonable points, but just never takes on board anything, believes he is completely right, continues to make the same points time and time again without actually really answering anyone else, which let's face is is considered spamming and bannable on a lot of forums. Also he states he is going and never does.

I'm out of this thread as I'm just not that bothered and have quite frankly not come across such an unpleasant, insightless poster in a long time. I am happy he has his opinions, but his endless broken record replies are just plain annoying. Don't even get me started on his "oh aren't  I amazing as I talked to all these people" stuff he throws in, these people are hardly Nelson Mandela or Obama and lets face it only a select few even in this country would have heard of them, but to Blue it's like he was at the signing of the Treaty of Versaille.

Although a relative newcomer to this country I think the problem with football here, is small-minded, entrenched and bitter people like Bluemagic. If you are an ok guy I'm sorry but you certainly don't come across as one.

Where has anyone said that having Kiwi players is a turn off?

We'd all love to see a Phoenix team filled with Kiwis, but we're happy to let Ricki and the Phoenix make the call as to whether those players are good enough or not.

[quote=bluemagic]
At the Kingz all the loyal supporters who wanted to could go upstairs to the bar at the stadium afterwards and have a drink with the team bosses and players (Rufer didn't come but his brother Shane often did). It was great, you could talk to Harry Ngata (great lad) and Chris Turner (who set up the Kingz) over a beer. It was great, especially in those first two seasons before the death rattle set in. It wasn't elitist or a rich-man's-toy. To me that is what footy is about. The same thing happens each City home game at Kiwitea Street. Sometimes the clubhouse is heaving. I even like turning up at some clubnights on Thursday when they put on dinner and players come back after training and meet the fans. I've had long chats with players and club bosses about the game.

Just out of curiosity, does that happen at the Phoenix?

Yes, it does. The players and staff are very available to the fans. Generally they make themselves available after their post-match meal at the Four Kings

[quote=bluemagic]
And why was it when there was a great double-header (All whites vs Bahrain and TW vs Auckland City) on offer only a few of you bothered to go to Newtown Park. All the city boys who went down made both games fine, in fact the City fans made all the noise at Newtown Park.

Very good question.

A number of locals did go and watch that game (including me).

But the reality is that there isn't a great deal of interest in Team Wellington matches.

You can't blame the Phoenix for that. Team Wellington crowds have been consistently low since day one, which pre-dates the existence of the Phoenix.

I think it's tremendous the support that Auckland City gets, but no other team in the NZFC has been able to generate that sort of following. This however, has nothing to do with the Phoenix or the A League. It has to do with a combination of factors including the quality of the league and the amount of marketing done by NZF to promote it.Smithy2010-01-16 19:25:36

So we should have Coombes, Haynes and more ACFC players and come last but be supporting the locals, or have the players we have, 5 regular Kiwi's starting (if counting Paston and Siggy) and be top 4?

This is our Wellington team and the Kiwis we have are good enough to be in it - and look where we are at the moment. I want quality players that will come close to, or win us the league.

Congrats to Auckland on the CWC. Well played - now go do it again, it sounds like you don't even need to qualify and that playing every year is a certainty.

Im sorry but how was i having a go? Thats exactly what i was saying. Bit confused there, because was actually trying to defend you by pointing out that you're not just being an idiot, you're just deliberately trolling to bring about discussion, with points that wouldnt normally come up. My dislike is that you seem to be too centred on wanting ACFC to succeed, but hey we're quite centred on wanting the nix to succeed (and for TW players to have a go too,we're in the same boat there too)

Thats all i was saying, and i was giving you the benefit of the doubt. But now im not too sure i want to continue with that stance.

TW suffers from one of the worst names in world football.  They'd be better off renaming themselves "Deportivo Wanka NZ".  (Becoming an affiliate of the Huancayo club in the process, I suppose.)

It would at least generate some shirt sales.

Terminator_X made some good points back on page 18, that appear not to have been picked up on.

I think the original question about what is good for NZ football is a valid one.

I think Wgtn Phoenix have been a huge part of a current renaissance in NZ football (All Whites success and Auck City CWC succes also are part of this ressurgence).

But would the best for NZ football be NZ (or Oceania) moving into the Asia confederation?

Would that mean the issues Asia has with Wgtn Phoenix' involvement in A-league go away?  Or not?

What would NZ's inclusion in Asia mean for the limits on foeign players in A-league teams?

If NZ was in Asia, same as Australia, would that mean NZ citizens would be "home country players" same as Aussie citizens, for the purposes of the A-League?

Cheers,
football tragic for too long

But we're NOT a baying mob!?

I think ACFC and what they did is a massive achievement.

I just think it's sad that you guys can't be pro-Nix despite having done so well because you're too pre-occupied with being the biggest swinging dicks in town. You're letting your desire to be the most important show in NZ get in the way of what's best for the game as a whole, and that's a real shame, because what you guys are achieving is tremendous and you sully that with your small-mindedness.
