Hilarious listening to all the angst pre-Hernandez announcement.

I'd be interested to know if any of the poddy line up would now change their view on Herbert going (or at least move back into the 'don't know' camp) based on the massive rabbit he pulled out of the hat today.

There's still got a long way to go but Hernandez is clearly Ricki's recruitment - is it enough to get him at least a stay of execution?

Interested to know why you give Ricki so much credit for this signing?  It's not as if he's identified a player out of nowhere - it's obviously great that he's been able to convince him to come, and all credit for that but isn't this one all about Welnix splashing the cash?  Like if Gameiro is good, then that to me is a massive tick for Ricki, not Welnix

Interested to know why you don't want to give him credit. "Poor recruitment" has been one of the biggest sticks we've all used to bash Ricki with so it seems a little hypocritical to not give him the credit for this.

Hernandez' salary will be within the salary cap so, no, this is not all about Welnix splashing the cash.

Oddly, I will probably give Ricki less credit if Gamiero works out because that one is clearly just an agent hawking him around the A-League on behalf of Fulham. Ricki probably didn't do much more than pick up the phone.

Currently he fits in next seasons salary cap because we have a lot of people coming off contract, I would assume that those wanting to re-sign with the 'Nix might not be happy with what's being offered.

Oh yeah, that's totally where the pressure will come from - assembling a squad within the cap. But Welnix have not 'opened their wallets' as such, at least no more than they have already.

Thats the point I was kinda making. His pedigree is similar to Fentons and look how that young lad turn out (remember his debut?) I'm not having a crack at your boy at all Smithy so calm down (yet again over Fenton). Its more 'why are we rubbishing a player who has yet to do anything'. He could well be the business or the a pile of shit. We do not know. Let the kid play then either build him up or tear him down FFS

Yeah, let's wait until at least half-time against Brisbane before we start doing that.

Beside the fact that in his senior career he's shown nothing to suggest he could be a successful player in the A-league (unlike Fenton, who was a star at ASB Premiership level, and impressed enough at VPL level to be on Melbourne Heart's radar), what's the point of bringing a loanee of that calibre on a 3-month deal, when we are committed to 5 other players playing in or around that same position, for at least one more season?

Just makes absolutely no sense to me.

Gameiro is on the radar of an EPL side and is an AU u20 rep. Much the same in comparison... Fenton was a very good player in the ASB league but would not have called him a star. Henry and Cheriton did more for your lads last year than Fenton (thats not to say Fenton is crap but he was not a 'star')

That's very harsh on Fenton. I'll hazard to say I saw much more of Team Wellington last season than you did, and Fenton was easily the best attacking player on the team - Henry wasn't even close to him. Fenton was literally running circles around the best defenders the ASB Premiership had to offer, and it was clear to see that he was going places.
As for being on the radar of an EPL side - that's a bit of a stretch. He got given an opportunity in the youth team of a Premier League side, just like 1000s of other kids, and he failed there, just like 1000s of other kids. Nothing new there.

In NZ we get waaaaaaay to excited whenever we hear the words "premier league".  Look at the numbers going through premier league academies - I read a stat a while back - 2 years after signing pro forms (which you do at 18) only 20% of footballers are still in the football league.

Oh I agree. I was using it to prove a point to be honest. It was more that the kid gets sandbagged before he kicks a ball and his background isn't dissimilar from Fenton.

In The Zone V47 is live at www.yellowfever.podomatic.com & Itunes bit.ly/YFZone. It's rating better than Seven Sharp!

On a bumper In The Zone episode, the pod reviews yet another away loss for the Wellington Phoenix FC, looks ahead to the double header against Adelaide United FC and Newcastle Jets , and questions whether Hernandez will fix our midfield woes next year. Elsewhere, the All Whites head to Dunedin on their way to Brazil, Waitakere United clinch top spot in the ASB Premiership, Exodus Team Wellington youth lose again, and there is the usual round up of kiwis abroad.

I think the Paston/Moss angle and the Hogg/Lochhead are an area where it is a weakness having RH coaching both teams.  Both Lochhead and Paston are All White stallwarts and will be in any squad even if they are second choice right up until the World Cup (if we qualify).  But probably one of Lochhead or Paston should probably be let go to free up some cap space - but won't on the basis they're probably not going to get an equivalent gig in the A-League and the AWs need them to be playing regularly.  Fine for me as I want the AWs to do well but could be a problem

I'm not too worried about having Moss and Paston both on contract at the Nix. I'd rather have one of them warming the bench than a young up and comer who needs playing experience.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

yeah, it's just not very effective us of the salary cap if we're paying full price for two international keepers when only one can start.  We're supposedly at the cap with a pretty av squad, this is the kind of decision you can take to save some money

Yeah agree. I'm certain they'll offer Paston reduced terms. Assuming he takes them, that will work out nicely for us.

In The Zone V48 is live at www.yellowfever.podomatic.com & Itunes bit.ly/YFZone.

On In The Zone 48, the pod reacts at Ricki Herbert’s resignation as coach of Wellington Phoenix FC and reflects back on his tenure. On the field, the Phoenix keep their slim playoff chances alive after drawing with Adelaide United FC and will anyone turn up on Wednesday night against Newcastle Jets? And in ASB Premiership land, Waitakere United blow their unbeaten season, YoungHeart Manawatu claim the wooden spoon, and Exodus Team Wellington finish on a high.

With such a low crowd - 4080 - even the players could hear us. At half time I yelled out "change the goalkeeper" cause pero cameron wasn't trying. And he looked up into the stand trying to see who it was.

As the Wellington Phoenix FC crash to another loss at home, the pod dissects our woes and looks ahead to Sunday's game in Dunedin. Meanwhile, the All Whites U20s squad is named for qualifiers in Fiji, and there's the usual wrap of Kiwis abroad.

I think Boxie has nailed it on Boxhall.  In a small squad you can't carry pure backups - you still need to have confidence in your reserves to step up and put pressure on starting players.  If someone is only good enough to be a sub are they really justifying their place in the squad? Someone who is "ok as a backup" could end up in the starting lineup v quickly due to injury. Same as Totori really

I think his one real 'mare was the Mariners and based on that you'd have chopped Manny and Ifill as well as everyone else who stunk up the pitch that day.

He was also very ropey in the 3-2 against Melbourne where we got badly pumped in the first half - probably one of our worst ever defensive performances.

The main argument for keeping him seems to be he is he's a kiwi and he's an ok backup.  I just think we have to aim a bit higher - if SIggy go injured in pre-season would you be happy with a Boxhall/Durante partnership for the season or would you want us to sign someone else?  If it's the second I think it's fair enough to ask whether he's the right player for  us

It's tough with defenders though eh. Combinations have to be worked on, I'm not sure if many centre backs can just slot right into a team seamlessly. Generally the better back fours in football have played a stack of games together and that has been true with us aswell in previous seasons.

Yep agreed, it's a tough gig all right.  I jut think you need to believe in Boxhall as a starter not just as a guy filling a place on the bench to justify keeping him on

Thanks!  This is one thing that frustrates me SO much.  I hate it when people spell my name incorrectly.  It's common courtesy.

Corey Gamiero hates it when people spell his name Cory too, which lead to us singing "C-O-R-E-Y, C-O-R-E-Y, C-O-R-E-Y, Gamiero was his name-o" at the match on Sunday.
