You guys are just making total random assumptions about contract negation based solely on your personal opinion of the club. It is possible that our negotiations were poor. It is equally possible that a 1 year deal was very important to Eze and that is the reason he signed with us.

I will say thought that 1 or 2 year deals are extremely common in the League. Im just guessing here but I'm going to say 1 year deals are even more common among visa players.

I'm going to throw in, the club seems to have planned a potential big reset at the end of this season.

Bill Tuiloma I think was our only signing for longer than this season that wasn't a youth player and that was mid-season. I don't remember anybody getting an extension.

Armiento, Mileusnic, James, Najjarine, Eze, Edwards; all signed for a year. Kartum replaced Ishige as a half-season loan.

My vague takeover from that movie was the coaches discussing how you can tell about alot about the level of player's self confidence, by how hot his partner/wife is or not!

And yeah we have no idea what terms Eze and his agent laid on the table for the Nix. It might have been 1 year take it or leave it. But he would have had his suitors. There would other lower budget leagues, that would scout off obscure places like Iraq. Those leagues being in the Euro shop window. Sth Africa's PSL I'm guessing one example.

That's basically the essence of a Moneyball type recruiting plan. The A League ain't that unique.

Plus when Eze was signed the reaction on here was very mixed. I mean when Eze was signed the reaction on here was very mixed. He clearly overachieved on people's expectations. It's classic 20/20 hindsight to say Nix should have pushed him for a longer deal.

I'd also say that they planned well in advance that Greeny would come in, to replace Chiefy mid season. They needed Chris G to complete his NZ U20 commitments (finished October), and then review how Italiano was going. If the Nix had lost at Redcliffe against the Roar in January, Greeny would have come in then. They were coming off that awful 5-1 thumping from the VUC at AAMI Park, and the drums were beating. But that 3-0 win over Brisbane gave Chiefy a stay of execution for awhile.

They also partly weren't keen on introducing a new coach prior this season, as it was majorly disrupted with a large cohort missing a chunk of pre season away at the U20 WC. The last U20s game in Chile was days before the ALM kicked off in Perth.

Overall you could agrue Italiano should have been dumped sooner (or not given a 1 year extension full stop), but there were a few moving parts at play. Age group WC scheduling affects the Nix more than any other ALM club.

This appointment is just an easy ,cheap ,predicable ( did they even look at another coach ?} options with no real ambitions to move forward in another direction and challenge AFC and/or the top 6. Completely agree -just mediocre and it's start at the top for years now. Why making a call so early? This is similar to the AW's- all long time there with no real changes- cliché same old same old - jobs for the boys. They need an independent management with no bias.

Gee some miserable people here. Good thing this is sorted early so he can get on to the phone to potential players he wants now rather than later. We may still have a decent pre-season.

I am sorry but this is just nonsense. It is a reasonable appointment of a no-nonsense local coach with proven loyalty to the club who knows the players and the club financial situation. He is neither worse nor better than other people we may find for the job (David Zdrilic anyone? Jean de Marigny? Alen Stajcic?).
To succeed, we will need good players directed by a good coach. I want stability and direction from Greenacre, and good basics; not winning the toilet seat in the first season is not going to turn me off. I expect decent performances; and what we put up against Macarthur was not it.

As a matter of interest have you ever spoken to anyone that works for the club in management or any of the players. Would be interested to hear which of them this " culture of mediocrity" that you and others talk about comes from because its cerainly hasnt been something i have heard from anyone involved in the Phoenix.
Its something you and others constantly throw around with little actual basis.

Ummm! Maybe what he means is what many fans would put in the mediocre list..... which include poor communication, poor socials, poor league results, poor playoff results, poor game promotion, poor recruitment, poor ambition etc etc.
I love this club and I want it to succeed but i dont have a blind eye to its faults.
This is a supporters forum and people have every right to constructively point out what they think needs to be done better.
Just because you are matey with people in the club doesnt give you the right to not allow others to express their opinions.
I am 100% behind Greenie as coach and I hope the club give him 100% support because hes going to need it

Greeny has been around the A League a long time. He will have contacts and knowledge that put him in a good place for building a team that can play his style of football. Looking forward to it.

Rather ironic yet you dont want me to not express an opinion on a statement about the club or the people working for it that is just wrong and made on a wrong assumption.
Not sure what me talking to people at the club has to do with it or in any way suggests i have a "blind eye to its faults, i have often posted things about the club which i feel arnt being done right or tell them directly unlike others hiding behind nom de plumes.
If i misunderstood what was posted im sorry but saying a " culture of mediocrity" to me suggests they seem to think that it is something planned and deliberately being driven by the club.

I make no apologies for unashamedly standing up for my club there are few of us who do it most just seem happy to continually bash them and complain about everything then be happy to jump to the front when things are going well.

I could see Ifill being approached by Greenie for an assistant gig. Could be a good combo, theyve both got history with the club and have been in NZ and around the Aleague for a while.

Having him and Greenie seems like they would work well together, and having 2 club legends there will make sure the squad know what it means to play for the club.

I might be remembering incorrectly but I feel like some of the training sessions Ifill helped out with was right before our win at AAMI Park.

I did not want to post it earlier but I distinctly remember our local TV commentators state (might have been the WSW game) that Greenie allegedly asked Ifill to get involved. No mention of any specifics, just that Greenacre reached out to Ifill directly and it must have been more than a 1:1 conversation for it to leak out. There was nothing further to it that I know of.

Cautiously optimistic about Greenacre.

But the press conference had no questions on his coaching approach is beyond 'hard work' and 'pride in the badge'.

He comes across better than he used to, but is still pretty bland.

I'd like to know which coaches and tactical approaches he admires.
Which past Nix players did he most admire?

For that matter, does anyone with an eye on the academy or NZ under 20s have an impression on what we're likely to get?

Ifill is currently in the UK scouting recuits for Greenie.
Ha! I just made that up. But he is there on holiday so maybe he is casting an eye on possible imports. A Greenie Ifill coaching duo would be fun. Two guys with vast footballing experiance and Nix veterans

There are qualification requirements for A-League head coaches (a Pro license). I dont know if there are requirements for assistants to be qualified or what level would be the minimum.

He might sound bland, but the body language and the way he addressed the questions I thought was very good.

He'll have his setups that he wants to employ as well. The 4-4-2 he brought in for the interim period was always more about steadying the ship over developing his own style and furthering his imprint on the team.

Looking ahead to next season I'm hoping to see more of the 4-2-3-1 setup which he employed for the U20's at the World Cup. The caveat to this for me though would be if we can re-sign Rufer. If he leaves we'd end up having to sign two quality #6's and I just don't know if we're able to pull two rabbits out of the hat in that instance to cover his loss.

As for further filling out of the squad, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a few lads he's worked with at the NZ U20 level come through, at least on a trial basis anyway.

Give me bland and sensible instead of a word salad every day of the week. 442 is his go to and relies on his 10's to provide the width and will also allow one of the 9's to go wide at times. The 4231 is more of a NZ Football system and I will be really surprised if he moves away from the 442....never did it in all the time he was the Reserves coach in the Nix setup notwithstanding the many and varied systems that Chief tried to implement. Imo just what the Club needs at this stage....hugely organised, places huge value on training, very good man manager, fair and highly respected by players and staff. If one was to be critical, maybe a little too rigid and would be good to see him change things up a little from time to time. Great appointment!
