I want to look forward to this game to forget about last night. Jets had a good win last night over Adelaide so should be an interesting tussle. Brockie still injured so he ain't playing.

My suggestions - Vuko in for Pasty, Brown is out with suspension so should bring Ward in and lastly give Pavlovich another go too.

Wouldn't expect Ward in there anytime soon. Think Daniel will start. Ward maybe on the bench.

Play players in their best / natural positions (i.e. North @ CB).

Get some pace and creativity on the park (i.e. Ward and Hearfield).

Have a formation that recognises the strengths and weaknesses of our players (i.e play a second striker up front with Greeny (i.e. Pav).

Play as a unit and play like your next contract depends on it - because, for a number of you, it does.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Hearfield is useless, with a capital U.

Just a word on North - he only arrives in Newcastle on Saturday morning after being in Cairo with the Socceroos for their game on Wednesday night, so there's a question-mark over his involvement.

I presume that North will play as a CB if he gets on the field for the Socceroos. How likely is it that he will play??

and how the hell can they take North over Dura??

anyway...

My thoughts exactly. Better for us though

A week ago I was thinking how the Jets would probably be our easiest away game, but after they bet Adelaide like that I can't see it being quite as simple. However they do have the midweek game against Brisbane so hopefully that'll tire them out a little.

I guarantee they wont play him at right back though. They might actually play him in position. Ricki, take notes.

             Vuko

Hearfield Dura   Siggy      Lia

             Muscat

Leo                      Daniel

            Ward

      Pav       Greenie

Bench: Big Mac, Ifill, Elliot,Paston

* Ifill to start on bench tactically. Sub early second half, when their defenders starting to tire. He may just find his touch a bit better. If we're still attacking, maybe swap for Hearfield, and drop back Manny. If we're defending, maybe Daniel.

* Big mac for Pav after he's run his arse into the ground. Still allows us to have someone tall for Greenie to work behind.

* Elliot in for Daniel or Leo, whoever most tired. Elliot to drop into Muscat's position, and either get Hearfield forward, or let Manny go for a run. He's got a bloody nice cross on him, we should use it more. I guess if not already subbed, you could swap for Lia or Hearfield, depending on if we're on defence more, in which case Manny drops into defence.

Actually Hearfield was good to very good last year at RB - he got forward with pace and beat players often - he added to our attack and, as a result, I'd suggest other teams thought twice about pushing too many of their left sided players forward.

He is also the only full back we have, including Lochhead, who can foot it with quicker wingers.

No question he was off form at the start of the season but in his appearance before last he was starting to show some of his old form again only to be dropped.

I can't be arsed checking the stats but my recollection is he was a regular in the back four that was so miserly with goals conceded last year. The current back four has one of the worst defensive records in the league.

So no Hearfield is not useless - our management of him is however highly questionable.

He will be another Kosta - he will move on and really perform in another team.

North over Dura? Because he has been playing well for Australia. Pretty simple really. Think they would be looking at his form for Australia over his form for a disjointed and poorly organised Phoenix.

My team....assuming Ward has dropped his attitude and North has enough time in Newcastle to warrant a start.

               Paston
Hearfield   North   Dura   Muscat

   Ifill    Elliott Ward   Leo

          Greenacre   Pav

Subs: Lia, Daniel, BigMac, Vuko

Time to sort sh*t out. Paston didn't do enough wrong to warrant getting the boot so he keeps his spot. North and Dura have to play together, it's ridiculous that they haven't been given 2 or 3 matches to gel. We seem to have short memories that Hearfield was actually decent at RB when Manny played DM last year. Manny seems ok at LB until TL comes back.

Elliott is playing ok at DM, but needs someone to pass to, Ward is that man and he takes over the attacking force in the centre of the midfield that Brown and Lia can't find AT ALL.

Pav and Greenie up front has to happen, seriously Greenie up front on his lonesome is just painful to watch, the guy is so good at sniffing out the loose ball, give him Pav to run off and provide another body up front.

Having two up front will allow Ifill and Bertos to play deeper on the wings and actually be in a position to receive the ball from Elliott and Ward and then have options in 2 strikers to deliver the ball to.

If there is a sniff of off-field tension in the squad then i can understand (sort of), Ricki's selections, but it's time to boss up and drop the egos for the good of the team. I think this team has the right balance and most importantly, nobody is playing out of position in it.

totally agree, with Brown out on a forced holiday, Ward has to come in and hopefully show he's worth it....I'm sick of seeing us play a small striker as the lone targetman......Greenie is not a target guy..although as small as he is he does amazingly well. He needs Pav or Bifg Mac to play along side.

All this talk about needing a tall man up front for Greenie to play off, yet people don't even seem to be considering playing the tallest man on the field. Paston!

All he'd need to do is collect the long balls, and Greenacre can pick up the scraps.

With a more than adequate replacement in Vuko I think this is the only logical option tbh

I'd go with this, but i'd still suggest Ifill off the bench, and Daniel to start.

I seriously think that would tactically be huge. And with only three subs, tactical subbing is pretty slim.

If it was to happen, just watch the opposition scramble to get a fresh set of legs on the pitch to mark him when he comes on.

I nearly went over for this game. Am starting to think it was a good decision to not have blown all my money on an away trip at this stage...

Yip Im pretty happy with thats lineup, except I would easily have Sigmund over Hearfield. Agreed that Sigmund isnt really a right back but he cant play anywhere nearly as bad as what Hearfield has been, especially after Hearfields performance off the bench on Saturday. But this does highlight the lack of depth in left back and right back positions. Which is why with the squad that we have available, I think a 3-5-2 formation would suit us better.

Unless we are effectively playing a 5-3-2, I think a 3-5-2 will leave us way to vulnerable down the flanks - especially with our relative lack of pace.

we could start to go a long way to fixing our problems by doing this - sign clapham. someone who has vision and can pass to feet and move into space.
Permalink Permalink

Agree Clapham is absolute class and could be a very effective player in the A-League. Though if he was playing for the Phoenix their style of play (thumping it long) could really stifle the way he plays and possibly not bring the best out of him.

As much as I dislike North - especially at full-back - there is no way that Hearfield is a better option

Ricki should read these forums, every week we're talking about change, but nothing seems to change with the Nix, but change is probably the best thing for the Phoenix and the same old same old isn't working!

Not a fan of a back three, but seem to have sod all options and I would rate North as Doubtful given travel.  Leo gets nod only because his fitness is OK and I think he is better with ball in front of him. Hearfield in because the cupboard is bloody bare. Ifill on the Bench as he has been crap.
