Jets concede dream is over
Monday, 7 February 2011
by Mark Hughes, Sportal

Newcastle Jets coach Branko Culina has conceded his club's finals dream is over despite still being mathematically in the race for a top-six spot after the 1-1 draw with Sydney FC at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The draw leaves the Jets six points shy of sixth-placed Wellington Phoenix with both teams having two matches remaining before the finals - this means the Newcastle club needs two wins and for the New Zealand club to get nothing.

"I am a realist and I am an optimist. The optimist in me tells me we are still in it but the realistic tells me that it is unlikely," Culina said after the 1-1 draw with Sydney.

"I asked them today (the Jets players) to keep the dream alive and they gave everything."

"It was very frustrating but can I just say how very proud I am of the players. To create so many opportunities and play ever so well and not to get a result is very frustrating but I am very pleased."

"What people don't understand is that what we have gone through and the words just fail me it has been an enormous effort considering everything that has been going on but I am pleased with the effort today."

The Jets created a host of chances in the match and went close to scoring, particularly in the first half.

Jeremy Brockie spurned an open goal and Labinot Haliti hit the crossbar before Sasho Petrovski was denied by a reflex save and Nikolai Topor-Stanley sent a shot just over the crossbar from point-blank range.

"I think we did everything we possibly could but the ball just wouldn't go in for us and that has been the story on a number of occasions for us this season," Culina said.

"Luck of lack of it. I think we make your own luck. But once again can I just say how proud I am of the players they gave everything and that is all I ask for. They had real mental toughness and character."

Culina said Newcastle's crippling injury toll was the main reason for the side's slide from fifth place two months ago to eighth and virtually out of the finals race.

"People don't understand I looked at the opposition team sheet and it was the same team for the last six weeks in a row we had 12 players missing and unfortunately for us it has been the whole year like that - not as many as 12 but anywhere between half a dozen and a dozen."

"I would like to see any other team put up with that. Sure we have lost seven out of the last 10 or whatever but we have gone close in all but two of those games so I am not happy that our dream probably won't eventuate but very proud of what the group of players have done under difficult circumstances."

Don't call you the Prof for nothing then!

if we lose today and sunday, but the jets win both their remaining games by 5+ goals, they will sneak through.

Not quite.. If we lose both our games our GD at best would be -4.
So Jets would have to win both games with a total GD of 4 to bring their overall GD to -3. eg two 2-0 wins would be enough.

The Jets don't need to win either of their remaining games by 5+ goals. If we lose both games 2-0, the Jets only need to win both their games 1-0.

I'm really looking forward to tonight's match.

I know we're away to the defending champions, and we've been weakened by suspensions and injuries, but how have we traditionally fared against tonight's opposition?

Actually had a couple of wins in Sydney (at least).
But they were in season 1 & 2 if my memory serves me correctly. Both 2-1.
Had the pleasure of being at the 2nd one.

Since then not that flash.

I know, I know, its serious!

Save your nails for the playoffs; the Jets aren't going to beat the Mariners and we aren't going to lose to the Fury at home. Tonight is just a chance to clinch early.

I'd happily take a draw right now. That would be a brilliant result given the suspensions.

the season 1 win was our 1st of those collectors' items "an away win"

a brilliant goal from felipe was a highlight and iirc a re-taken daniel pen also featured

I've said it before and I'll say it now, if we can't at least Draw with NQF at home, we don't deserve to be in the playoffs/can have no complaints if the planes pip us.

Absolutely. If we lose to NQF, lets call it a season and do better next year.

Maybe sign:
- a full back
- some midfielders
- some attackers

if the Jets drop a point in the next two games and we were to lose v NQF, we would then "deserve" to be in the play-offs because we will have finished 6th

I will be disappointed if that's how it happens but not a disappointed as i would be if we finish 7th and don't make the play-offs

it's not about how we get there at this stage of the season, it is about getting there

our win at adelaide has set us up nicely but there are still 3 matches can determine the outcome

edit - just seen that CCM won 3-1 last night

so CCM now have second place sorted - a less incentive v Jets in wknd

not so happy now

Yep. To be precise, teams are sorted by:
- Points
- Goal Difference
- Goals For
- Head-to-Head Points Gained
- Head-to-Head Goal Difference
- Fewest Red Cards
- Fewest Yellow Cards
- Coin Toss

Curious how they don't bother with h-t-h goals for, but that's quite common.

36 v 25 (Jets). Neither Sydney nor the Hearts can make it anymore, so the 30 and 33 are irrelevant.

This uncertainty of a playoffs spot, keeps a level of excitement going for all of us. If Jets do beat Perth tonight then it will come down to our Nix game Sunday...with the Jets v CCM following straight after.
Should Jets win tonight, the Nix will have destiny firmly in their hands Sunday...and we'll be raising the roof on the RoF in support!! GYGT!!

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Not remotely interested in what the Jests do, or don't do. Once we've thrashed the Fury to within an inch of their miserable lives, the Jests' results are meaningless. It's up to us. Jag2011-02-10 13:08:34
