The 6 team playoff system really does work in this sense. If it was top 4, then 6 teams would have been effectively eliminated two months ago, and would have nothing to play for. With six teams, there will be at least 8 teams looking to improve their spot in the playoffs heading into the final round.

true true .But would it work better with more teams? say 15 teams?

Should it work though, that's the point? Being rewarded for a very mediocre season doesn't seem fair really.

We have a cracking final round of games on the cards for next week:

  • Winner of Brisbane vs Sydney makes the playoffs, and the loser is potentially out of the playoffs.
  • WSW need a point against the Jets to win the premiership, whereas the Jets could sneak into the six with a win.
  • CCM would need a win against Heart if WSW lose in order to claim the premiership, and Heart will be looking to pick up at least a point to try to get above the Nix.
  • Perth will be looking to win against Adelaide to confirm a playoffs spot, and Adelaide will be looking to jump ahead of the Victory and claim 3rd spot, but they would need to win to do it.
  • Victory might need a win to get back into 3rd place if Adelaide also win, and the Phoenix will be looking to better Hearts result to .

If WSW get a point against the Jets, they seal the title. If that happens CCM will probably rest their players against Heart, looking towards the ACL game midweek. So gotta cheer on the Jets Friday night. #AvoidTheSpoon

Also, cheer for Perth. If Victory have third place wrapped up before they face us then they may rest Archie and Milligan, who would have played for the Socceroo's midweek.

Any advantage to the Tards if they finish 3rd instead of 4th?  Just thinking/hoping that they will be a bit meh for the last game if it means they can rest players/avoid injuries and our sticky grass.

Playing 6th in their final instead of 5th. (So the loser of SYDvROAR or Glory/Jets rather than the winner SYDvROAR)

Also, if they win their playoff, they will play 2nd place rather than first, which is likely to be CCM at this stage.

Has the finals system changed this year?

Permalink Permalink

Yep. 3rdv6th and 4thv5th, with the higher ranked winner then facing 2nd and the lower ranked winner facing 1st. The winners of those two games then play the Grand Final at the highest ranked teams stadium.

Interesting to note that the team who came 5th in the league is now able to host the Grand Final.

Wow, that's quite different. Not nearly as much advantage to finishing 1 & 2 as there was previously.

Most years under the old system, you ended up with 1st v 2nd playing 3 times in 4 weeks.

Yeah, for us the timing of these games and how teams react to other results is crucial if we want to #avoidthespoon

We don't really care what happens in Brisbane v Sydney because regardless of the result both the Jets and Perth will still have a chance to make the play-offs by winning, which is important for us.

In the next game we definitely want Newcastle to beat WSW.  The Jets should be motivated to win because they are very unlikely to make the play-offs with just a draw.

If WSW lose then in the next game CCM will be really motivated to beat Heart so they can snatch the championship on goal difference. We need Heart to lose, or at least draw, so that we still have a shot to #avoidthespoon. Hopefully CCM are just so much better than the Heart that even if they don't need to they will still batter them.

In the next game we also want Perth to beat Adelaide, which would mean Victory then have 3rd place sewn up. Regardless of other results Perth will still have a shot at the top 6 at this stage so should still be motivated.

Ideally, by the time we get to Sunday Victory will know they have 3rd place locked down and will not be too bothered about us. They may even consider it quite a laugh to roll over for us and condemn Heart to being bottom.

That's not irony. That's a metaphor.

It was well discussed at NCEA level a few years ago. One of the curriculum teachings was 'explain why the song Ironic doesn't actually contain any irony' and the students used it in the English test as the essay component.

It's the one thing Ed Byrne is known for  - there are other versions of this.  Just as funny are the outraged Youtube comments from fans.

And the discussion about similes and metaphors.

Best defence first, best attack second. Who says defence doesn't win titles?

If Heart hadn't scored tonight, CCM would have had equal best defence.

Only Perth Glory have scored less goals than us.

Victory will drop below Adelaide tomorrow if we beat them by two or more goals. We just need a point to avoid the spoon. Time for us to play out a 0-0 bore draw?

Sydney FC miss out on goal difference.  Oh well. :-)

Still plenty for both sides to play for. Ange will want his side to play to their max as their form has been a bit indifferent lately. Plus they have Rojas, Thompson and Archie back. Should be a cracking game. Unbelievable that if we win this we would finish the season on 30 points...and teams made the top six with 32 points....despite our crappy season it would have been close
