Woooohhhhooooo, first match thread of the year. Seems like the article in the paper today suggesting Diego wont start.

I would imagine we will play a 4-4-2
                       Pasty
 Muscat       Siggy     Dura      Lochy
  Bertos     Brown   McKain     Hearfield
                  Greenacre Costa

And we will win 2-0, cmon you NIX!!!

Ifil to come off the bench as Ricki continues his previous trend of being conservative with rushing guys into the team

A very solid looking line up and perhaps for away games just right.  Hopefully when we come home, there will be something more adventurous in the middle.  The great thing is, we could all slot other players into the midfield without weakening it at all.  That is a squad with strength in depth, 10th place my arse!

If todays training is anything to go by I think Ifill will be on for Costa

I dont think ifill will be starting, hes been here less than a week. he surely cant fit in straight away but can see him coming off the bench.
jiang chen wont play. almost garanteed. he hasnt even signed yet.
sounds like diego would hardly play.

as someone said above, we have so much depth this year. thats not abad midfield and we still have the likes of ferrante, diego and daniel.
I expect a big improvement from daniel this season.

Simply not possible.

For all he has going for him (umm, pace), his finishing is about the worst I have ever seen in a pro footballer.

That's my pick for the line-up and score - can't wait !!!!!!

I would expect to see daniel at least on the bench. It would be great to see the old magical Daniel back, and I have a sneaking suspicion that might happen this year (at least for a good part of the season).

We've got real options this year. Jets game though will probably be at the defensive end of the scale.

Excited.

I know, I know, its serious!

Greenacre and Ifill to start plse with Costa and Daniel off the bench...the strikers need game time to get patterns worked out and confidence building...... let the air miles begin.

The amazing thing about this thread is how close all the team selections are. With one or two exceptions everyone has the bulk of the side. This gives us a great advantage.....most of the guys know each others play. For the first time in the phoenix history we seem to have consistency in player selections.

I am really excited....our defence looks great. They will be hard to break down. Leo and Troy and Daniel all have shown good early season form. Greenacre looks like a real pro....he won,t let us down.

In Ifill,s radio interview he said he feels fit and hopes to start. He said he won,t know how match fit he is until well into the game. Expect him to start and be subbed after an hour.

In previous years we went into games hoping they would do well.....we now can expect them to do well.

GO THE PHOENIX

Well this season is gonna be all about form. And hopefully not about reputation. I can see Brown making it in so hopefully this is because he is on game. Otherwise we have the likes of Hearfield, McKain, Bertos, Diego, Daniel who can all push for starts. Not to mention Rojas somewhere in there. I'd like to see Greenacre and Ifill up front but if not, then play Costa. 442 is what Ricki wants to be playing unless we go for the defensive style then I could see Brown and McKain.
And I don't think Diego has proven to be a starter at all so far preseason..

2-1 to us. Come from behind at halftime with Greenacre to score in the 70th with a scrappy goal, then Ifill off the bench with a screamer inside corner of the box, with 5 to go..

Wait and see, this is going to be the year when Bertos steps up and starts scoring, he'll get 5 at least...

They have some pretty big issues as well.  Negotiations with the ex-Fascist seem like they may fall apart, they haven't signed any of the half-dozen trialists they have had in, Thompson buggered off to asia (I think), Wheelhouse is broken.

I read somewhere they only had 9 contracted players at training the other day.

Even so, Newcastle will be pumped because it's the first game of the season and they're in front of their own fans. We shouldn't expect a walkover.

Agreed too, Oska. I reckon Bertos could become a more consistent scorer this year. I recall last season him putting in some good shots on goal as well as the two he actually scored. I think this idea that he has got some kind of mental block in front of goal is a nonsense.

theres no way they would be settled...

There don't appear to be any obvious passengers in the squad this year, so selection should be pretty interesting.

Even Mulligan has reportedly been doing some good work im midfield.

I would imagine there could be a few pissed off players who dont even get on the trip.

I cant see RH starting a young Costa instead of an experienced Ifill, unless the latter is obviously unfit.

Lia, Ferrante , Mulligan, Daniel would all have grounds for complaint against the sides suggested so far.

But I think Im gonna go with

                   Paston
Muscat   Sigmund Durante Lochead
Bertos     Brown    McKain  Ferrante
         Ifill        Greenacre

Bench: Lia, Daniel, Hearfield

Leo missed a sitter v Guangzhou. Wouldn't rely on him to score goals - just hope his assist tally gets back to what it can be.

I'd be a worried about a Greenacre/Costa forward line...it's a bit midget. Hopefully Ifill is fit enough.

Leo couldn't finish a cheeseburger.

Hope he proves me wrong on Sunday though.

doesn't Chen have to sign before the season starts, or we get in trouble or something for not having 20 players?

He did have a few decent cracks though. Was unlucky to score against Perth if I remember correctly.. Would have been the winner and he would of been a hero

But then if I also remeber correctly, he also missed that sitter 1 on 1 against the roar..
think it might have even been 2 v 1. hmmm.
