I was sitting next to the box where the reserve players sit, they were all there. Except Simon Elliott. Maybe he has gone home?

Steady game time? 3 minutes in 2 matches? I was impressed with Rojas tonight, hope he gets a start soon!

Paston - 7. Looked more steady than last few games. Less punching too.
Hearfield - 7. Didn't utilise space as well as he has done in the past but looked good going forward.
Durante - 8. Lead the defence well.
North - 7. Covered well when needed.
Musa - 6. Not bad for first game, lacking experience with some strange positioning.
Muscat - 8. Covered the pitch well, supported Musa too.
Lia - 5. Lost the ball to much and was lucky not to be booked for poor tackle.
Brown - 7. Good goal, shame about his first chance.
Bertos - 5. Not the best season for Leo, lacking that spark.
Daniel - 6. I would rather have seen Rojas/Ward start TBH. Looses the ball to much and his crosses/set pieces were average.
Ifil - 8. Great goal, looked busy.

Ward - 7. Impacted the game well, impressive.
Greenacre - 5. Did sh1t all really!
Rojas - 9. Great stuff. Changed the game. Great runs. Give him more match time!
Hearfield 4 - Melbourne content to give him all that space he got on the right and not a sniff of a chance generated.
Lia - 4 - Poor distrbution
Greenacre - 7.5 Did well after a poor early touch.
Ward - Mixed - I could see why he hasn't got too many starts, but he did settle and had a postiive imapct on attack.
Rojas - 8 - not on long enough and would have to score to get a 9.  But exciting.

Nexct game - Siggy returns and Musa takes Hearfield's place?

Feeling a lot happier about the team after the last two games - signs of life on offense and plenty of effort.

Happy with a draw coz halfway through the second half I thought we were in for a 1-3 defeat.

I watched the warmups...Musa was mega nervous. I think half the team spoke to him before kickoff. He did get caught out a couple of times but considering his age and the fact that he was playing out of position I thought he did OK.

He times his headers very well and was never beaten in the air. Some of his long passing was sublime....reminded me of Winston Ried. He dropped two 40metre passes right at Ifills feet. He will have a long career at the Nix.

Just loved Rojas. He looks like a schoolboy but he played with a lot of maturity. His close ball control was excellent. He needs to be a little more selfish and shoot. He was the perfect impact player....running at tired defenses. Hope he will have as much impact as Caceras.

What can you say about Paul Ifill.....he was everywhere today and you won't see a better individual goal in any level of football. Form is temporary.....class is permanent!!!

I only watched brief highights but boy was our defending shocking on the goals. On the second one our back 4 looked like traffic cones!

Hats off to Ricki - good use of subs early on in the second half - and they all played their part.
This. He injected players when we needed something. Not when it was too late and we're playing desperation football. He's given them a little more time to settle in and get going and it worked. We could have stolen it at the end there. Granted we played poorly in patches but I think the last 30-35 minutes was mostly good and a lot of that was credit to the subs.

Yeah same old sh*t again, that 2nd goal was especially bad. Alot of  people are jumping around like pussies, stoked that we didnt lose. To me a draw is as good as a loss, especially at home.

good call, he has in the past seemed to like to use effectively pre-planned subs but this season he has tried to make subs to chase games which is a good thing.

2nd goal was awful, noone was marking Kruse, left the gate wide open for him to waltz through and take a fee shot......most of us were dnacing wth relief that we escaped with the draw I think.

Considering the guy was probably so nervous last night he hardly got a wink of sleep I thought he did well. He will have learnt a lot from that game. Really good prospect.

Ya miserable sod!

Pleny of positives out of today even if we didn't get the 3 points, some of our attacking play in the first half was the best I have seen this season by a mile, Ifill back on form, two young kiwi's putting in good shifts, North playing the role we expected him to do, ref falling on his @rse...

I agree - possibly the most entertaining football I have seen the Nix play all season. The two goals were a bit loose and both came down the left, a position where Musa seemed a bit nervous in the entire first half (he is a natural CB after all). Musa did impress second half though - fantastic aerial ability in particular. BUT plenty of attacking options and chances, and the bench (depth?) was fantastic, Melbourne were truly lucky to only concede two - if we keep improving the way we have been over the last home games, we'll be alright.

Agreed. Just finished watching the replay and we completely controlled that 2nd half - and not because Melb were playing poorly either. At one point with about 25 to go the commentators were complaining that we lacked urgency, yet I was pretty happy with our play because in contrast with most previous games we were (a) keeping the ball with good build up and passing, and (b) closing them down quickly when we did lose possession.

For me the draw was a good result, and the Nix's performance has for the first time this season made me think we might be able to do something after all.

Sh*t loads of positives tonight;

Ifill back to his absolutely brilliant best - magic piece if individual skill for his goal.

Although we did drop off for about 20minutes overall our commitment was very good.

Bench players reallyhad a huge impact - Greeny, Ward and Marco were excellent.

I thought Musa showed he has a load of potential - he got skinned a couple of times but he'll learn and adjust to the pace of first team footballand remember the calibre of the player who skinned him. He is very good in the air and has a very accurate long pass. As his confidence grew he also started to push forward and added plenty. A talented left sided player is a rare thing.

I just love Marco's willingness to take on, and skill and speedto beat, players.

I also thought that was Browns best game of the season and Hearfield is also getting back to his best.

On the need improvement side I thought Leo's work rate was pretty average, Daniel's fluctuated too much and Lia's passing was, at times, terrible.

To finish; If we have scored a better team goal (ever !)than the first tonight I'm buggered if I can remember it.

Plentyof tough selections choices for next week !!

I am not worried by tough selections!!! Bring it on!

Agree with all of that StopOut. The last 20 minutes was all Phoenix. We were actually passing through the midfield and Ricki made good choices with the substitutions.

Musa looked very nervous in the first half but had a great 2nd half. Surprised no one else has mentioned this or maybe they have as I have only read the last 3 pages but what about his long throw ins!!!   Our own Rory Delap.

Big ups to the fever last night as well. Plenty of anti Melbourne chants and a few aimed at the Tard supporters at the other end. Great night. Shame no one took up HN's offer of $500 to kick Robbie Kruse

In the recent home loses you could see the Phoenix players slump as the opposition team scored and upped tempo for the win.
Not last night though.Despite once again being a goal down the Nix persisted.
Its been great to see Musa and Rojas in action. Musa is a positive player, needs to sort his defensive positioning in that LB role.(.that's where the Melbourne goals both came through), but some wonderfully accurate long passes, huge throw-ins and aerial strength and headers all plusses for someone playing his first ever pro game.
As for Rojas, incredible to see the young attacking Phoenix player running directly at the opposition like that! It sure got the crowd going. With more game time we will hopefully see him back himself to finish.
Drawing the yellow card for Muscat..Priceless! (No nutmeg, but told you so )
It bodes well for the Phoenix ...and potentially the All Whites as players of the future.
(Imagine Kosta and Marco unleashed up front for the AW's!!)
Standouts for me last night were the effectiveness of all of Ricki's subs and the workrate of Paul Ifill. Now he's scoring goals again he's a different player.Great to see him back in form.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Musa showed that he has potential, but got caught ball watching a couple of times, and probably isn't quite up to starting at this level yet.

Hearfield showed why his future is not as a winger/forward as some would like to think. He defended adequately, but going forward he has no ability to beat a player with anything except for pace. Also, if he does go round a player he is incapable of delivering the ball into a dangerous area in the box, runs down blind alleys far to often, and turns over ball.

Ifill's goal was an amazing piece of brilliance. By far the best in the league with the ball at his feet at the top of the box.

Thought that Hearfield had his best game for a long, long time. Probably helped by the fact Melbourne only attacked Musa's side basically all game but still.

Ifill was back to his best. Brilliant all game.

Thought that basically everyone else played well except Lia, Daniel and Leo who struggled all game.

Musa cost us 2 goals. Simple as that, really - can't be too hard on him though as it was always going to happen. To me, he looks more like a prospect at CB, not fullback. Good in the air - he didn't lose a header all game - and physically capable too.

Rojas looks an exciting prospect too - reminds me of Kosta when he first played. Beats players with ease but then isn't too sure what to do with it. Had a good opportunity to shoot.

I agree with the second bit, he should make a decent centre back.

Having watched the replays, Im not sure the goals were just his fault.
He had two-on-one for the first goal, and he tracked the man going inside, leaving Thompson free.

Heads well, strikes the ball well, and seemed to have hell of a throw on him.

A bit of an aside - it was great to see a decent contingent of Victory supporters last night - adds to the atmosphere if there is an opportunity for a bit of banter with traveling fans.

I hope they enjoyed their trip to Wellington and spread the word.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

During warm ups, Musa did look a little at sea not knowing what to do, he hasnt been involved in the game day squad before has he?

He kept drifting in leaving space on the outside and it cost us a couple goals, and did seem to hesitate putting in tackles during the first half. I thought at half time he might be subbed off. His second half was much better defensively.

On the plus side, he looked to distribute the ball well, good in the air, and has a handy throw in.

He showed enough to think he could be a good player for us in the future, Center Defender or Defensive Mid but not at Left back.

As for Rojas, whoever nominated him for the scholarship, can we have a couple more like that please?

We had four extras over from Nelson with us for the game.  Two footy playing young lads under ten and their less footy oriented parents who were nevertheless keen to see what the Nix and the fever were all about.

They've watched a lot of the Nix on TV but were a bit blown away (especially the parents) by the atmosphere in the stadium, the range of chants and enthusiasm of the YF and the spectators generally.  sh*t and I thought we were pretty flat for at least half of the game lol.

A few more disciples sent back out to spread he word.  In their spanking new Phoenix kit bought at the stadium.
