I did say this.

I was saying exactly the same thing to the people I was with in aisle 20 - why did they have to chant whats the score, what did you think was going to happen?!

It changed the formation, and the mentality of the team, and Porter got behind him alot more than he did Manny. I never said he was at fault for both goals, but the effects of the substituion had is what cost us.On a positive note, I thought the Greenacre / Macallister partnership up front looked very promising.

To be fair we were sitting back and defending even before that sub

Ok i think tactically, taking off mac for Hearfield and switching muscat up the pitch was a terrible decision. we have heard how much greeny wants to not play sole striker, so what do we do? I would have preferred to take off greenacre in that situation.

True thought Mac A was great- good vision, not greedy -he could have had a go on the second goal, but showed intelligence to knock it on. Hard to blame a player brought on to change formation - hearfield. there were plenty of other chances to win or lose this game, and I am convince and hopeful that we will view this as a point won rather than two lost at the end of the season.

hearfield coming on for mac not a problem but dont change formation and shape as hearfield could have supported greenie and with the the ball in the wet could have taken on there slow defence as it turned out we went defensive and greenie was isolated

Disappointing game. More disappointing were the w**kers behind us in the heart of the Fever Zone who did their best to ruin the game for us for daring to ask their friend to move from the seats we've occupied for the last 3 years.

Well, I have to say, the way we played, a draw was a fair result.

We were 3-1 up, and finish up 3 all. That should never happen at home.

We did well playing games on the 13th last season. The date has nothing to do with the result tonight.

We didn't play that bad. Remembering its the first game, slight lack of fitness, bad conditions.

Gutted but not concerned...

I got drenched walking back to the train.

Strangely gutted about the result, despite the conditions being sh*t arse and we at least matched all but the marinators and the love hearts on the points table. I guess it is because I am...well wet.

With the conditions it makes you wonder at what stage the ref calls the game off.
It is not good for the players
It is surely not good for the spectators.
It is not good for promoting the game.
To pay good money to watch what was really a lottery would have pissed me right off. As a spectacle it was a shocker.

After being 3-1 up that felt like a loss. Hard to understand tactical change, Greenie and Macalister were doing a good job if anything Bertos and Ifill had drifted out of the game.

Tactical genius from GCU taking off Van De Brink and Rees they were good for us.

I was.. quite disappointed tonight. But such is life. I thought the defence was just letting those small breaks through. something just didn't click in there, i dunno. soaked. sad. and want to get high.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

That I agree with. Ifill made Van den Brink look like  a clown all night.

Unfortunately, I also have to agree that our substutions did not help our cause at all.

Smeltz and Culina were class for GC.

I don't know what game you were watching then I saw a great game. I love what I'm seeing in the A League, quite happy to watch that above the EPL or any other league [and I like NZFC too - does that make me a bad person?????]

i didn't think it was a lottery.  "not good" isn't a reason to call off a game.  it wasn't unplayable.  i hope te whaea is unplayable at 9.45am on sunday though.  somehow i think i'll be there though, watching the same girl who was chanting 'same old aussies, always cheating' with quite some gusto, skip around the park doing not much, in the rain.

Should they call games off if it's too hot? or too cold?, too windy? too humid? it's the same for both teams, as for the spectators, everyone seemed to have a good night, & I have in the past, travelled for many hours to see a game that got called off after 62mins because of water on the pitch & people were a damn sight more p**sed of that the game was called off rather than played in bad conditions. I dont care what the weather is like, if the Phoenix are playing I'll be there, along with thousands of others

Biggest worry for me was that the phoenix still struggled to create chances through keeping possession. On the break we look great but when GCU got numbers behind the ball, we got the ball out wide, crossed it in and gave the centre-backs heading practice. Toto to create some spark in midfield? Not sure the 4-2-3-1 worked defensively. Lia and Brown were getting drawn out really wide quite often and this left us exposed in the middle. Then changing formation when Troy came on didn't seem to tighten up the midfieldBlack n Yellow2010-08-14 00:06:11

Sorry guys but bringing hearfield on was f**king stupid. Why is he even on the bench or in the squad for that matter. He can't even pass the ball 10 metres he is so crap.Anyway enough of that, why change your backline when they are doing fine.Definately poor decision from Ricky. One more point, if your knocking long balls all day because of the conditions why take of the best player today as he held up everything aka Big D.
f**king disappointing, 2 points lost for sure!!!!

Maybe I was watching a different game (Hearfield was still sh*t in mine) but I don't think that I would ever have described our defence today as 'doing fine'.

True. It might've helped that I was warm and dry but I really enjoyed that game. Surprisingly too, given the conditions, there was some good movement and passing, mainly from GCU, but we also had an excellent period of play in the first 15-20 of the 2nd half.

Are you serious? robbed? gold coast should have had 6 or 7. nix were outplayed and were extremely dissapointing at the back.
Fix 1 - North for Siggy will help, not that siggy was too bad, but Lochhead and Hearfield are going to get run at all season
Fix 2 - forget about hearfield at wide back
Fix 3 - oh well, never mind

Enjoyed the game, just as well GCU didn't walk in those two open goals

Don't really think that the conditions make it fair to judge that. Wasn't really a day for knocking the ball around on the deck.

Agree with you that Lia and Brown often left them wide open in the middle, especially early on in the match.

too early for dunedin footbal decisions. (our team last (over 35's)  week lost 3-1, despite only having  9  players, including a 19 year woman who is the daughter of one of our players. need a sleep in, but maybe 1115 kick off, and then a 2:45 kickoff (despite chatham cup semi at 2pm.(

go cavy!!!

I think GCU showed that it could be done in the wet. I thought their passing and movement in the final third was a big step up from their last match. If not necessarily scoring, they were at least creating chances. But fair point not the best weather to judge. I'm just quietly praying it's not going to be a season where I can count on one hand the number of balls sent through at the top of the box to Greenie or Maca's feet. Please prove me wrong phoenix!!

I think both teams really showed that thi could be a really interesting season. Opprotunities were created and missed, but  I am still impresed with some of  the football. still picking both teams at least in the final 4.

I agree, Ifill looked very good to start with, great touch, body position is superb, not afraid to hit it, did he pick up a knock or just drift out of the game a bit? Maca is playing up top well, shows composure, makes good decisions, feeds greenie well. leo has remembered that when he runs at people with the ball, he'll often be able to get past them and so it's worth a crac!  greenacre worked hard and deserves his goals. Lots to be excited about!! And that shot from vinnie lia, please sir, can I have some more!!

A bit off topic, but it's nights like tonight that make me realise what a good idea a stadium like Dunedins new Forsyth Barr Stadium is. Means weather (the wind & the rain. all you're left with is the phoenix) isn't going to have an effect on the pitch. I know i'm just pissing into the wind, but i think a stadium like that would've worked in place of the RoF. It's supposed to hold 31,000. (probably could've upscaled in the case of wellington, and it's a sqare stadium, so the seating is right up next to the pitch. Indoor stadium makes for bigger noise, bigger atmosphere. Give the basin reserve a bit of a makeover to get it up to ODI standards and it'd all be go. I fear that dunedin-sized crowds just won't do it justice. Will be sweet for a phoenix game though!

On the topic of the game, well, it was bloody hilarious to watch. I'll give it that.

Off topic: can someone please start a campaign to build a roof over the stadium concourse? There must be some spare funding available from the rugby world cup kitty?

basically they screwed up when they built westpac.  they thought that cricket was going to be more of an equal partner but noone wanted to play tests there and so we have ended up with a piece of crap 34,500 seat oval instead of a 40,000 rectangle, even though cricket gets 2 games a year there (and those could be played on a rectangle, given they're 50/50 or 20/20s).  it is the wrong shape, too small for all blacks' games, too small for us to make a claim on a group stage of an aussie football world cup, basically rubbish.  angles are all wrong. right location though.
