Move McKain back.
and
Move Siggy forward to be the single defensive midfielder
and have Brown replace him with about 20 to go

Would have been worth a look in preseason?
Think we could maybe try this -

              Paston
MusCat Siggy McKain Lochhead
               Diego
Hearfield             Bertos / Daniel
             Daniel /  Bertos?
       Ifill   Greenacre

I know its not likely, but wonder how Diego would go there?

Im off to buy TEN tickets tommorrow morn!!! Can't wait

Yeah good point he gets the goals when we need them and also offered - last year - the passion we lacked so much.

I agree prof, thats not saying alot. Don't we need more than just a few"crucial minutes" out of a playerin aseason? The way we played last yearanygoal wasgoing to be crucial. They always are, even ifwe wereleading 6-0.

We always need goals wellynixfan, anytimes good and if he is just there for passion we might as well get some of the yellow fever playing, passion in spades. , and from what I've seen, of the Nix maybe some better players?

They need a leader, preferably on and off the pitch.

Maybe Siggy and Bertos should give the team talk.

Hoping for 12+ thousand but 8-9 would probably be worth applause all things considered.

Ideal time for a really big ROF turnout.

"A-League clubs and officials are keeping positive despite a series of disappointing attendances for the opening round of the newly-expanded competition.

Despite being the most anticipated season yet with the inclusion of new teams Gold Coast and North Queensland, crowd numbers were far from spectacular in the opening games of the season.

In fact, the average crowd for the weekend's matches was lower than in any other opening round in the league's five-year history."

Hmm, currently working on a cunning plan which means I'll get to the ROF on Sunday.

How cunning would you rate it:

1.  A plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel

2. As cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on, and is now working for the UN at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning?

Will Ricki drop brown? Can he? I'd like to see Tim fight for his spot or even a bench spot?

I'm a big fan of Brown, and he does score the odd scrappy goal for us (or is that for the AW's?), but I agree he needs to move to the bench for this match. McKain to stay as DM and Diego to move into AM spot behind Ifill and Greenacre. Keep Bertos and Hearfield on the wings and I guess maintain that same back four. Surely with a week of Ricki hammering the defensive message home our two CB's can sort things out this time.

Agree with the line up... upon pondering about this, my bench would be

Crowther
Daniel
Costa
Ferrante/Brown/Lia

I think it is still early days for Chen at the club, and he needs a bit more intergration time. I also see Daniel as an important midfield replacement, and so would have him on my bench with no concearns

The radio adverts are the worse ads I have ever heard on a radio.

If I wasn't a Phoenix fan, I would be laughing at these. Actually, I laugh at them anyway.

They couldn't be more boring if they tried, ok Daniel I can understand about not having the best English, but Tim Brown? Put some effort in, and not make it so obvious your reading from a sheet of paper. '

Good on them for putting the ads on, but these are sh*t.

Here's a formation I wouldn't be opposed too at all.

                       Paston
Lia                   Sigmund            Muscat
        Ferrante              McKain
Bertos               Diego              Hearfield
          Greenacre      Barbarouses

Bench:
Crowther
Durante
Ifill
Daniel

I know it's a risk playing three defenders but McKain and Ferrante can both provide cover as well as supplying the attack.  I don't know, could end disastrously, but I would be interested to see how it would go.

RH needs to send the lads a clear message. Perform or sit in the stands - we've got depth in the squad and he needs to use it... sooner rather than later.

I concur. I just can't see both him and AD being dropped - it's a toss of a coin.

I'd like to see:-

            Paston

Muscat Sigmund Durrante Lochead

           McKain
Bertos                 Daniel
           Diego

      Ifill Greenacre

Lia
Costa/Chen
Ferrante
Crowther

No room for Brown, Lia to provide cover for Muscat/Lochead/McKain.

Hard on Hearfield because he was far from worst last week but Daniel on left and Bertos on right for me is much better combination and no place on bench for Hearfield as need the spot for Costa/Chen

RH needs to give a lot more thought to the make up of his bench and using it more effectively. Against Newcastle we had no striker to bring on to chase the game or replace Ifill when he ran out of steam. The only reason for Brown not getting dragged must be because they couldn't find him to drag him.

I don't see how the back 4/5/6 can remain intact after Sundays performance. And I'll be disappointed if it is tbh.

Last year we had one of the better defensive records in the League - I think we need to be careful not to over react with wholesale changes in the back four because they had, collectively, one bad game. My initial thought was to keep the same back four however, on reflection, I would like to see one change - that would probably be Lochhead. Tony was given the run around by Song and, as good as Song is, Tony made it easy for him by giving him way too much space. Whilst I'm sure he knows that I also think his crossing hasn't been the best and someone else deserves a shot - we have the depth - let's use it. I'd leave the CB pairing alone as they are both better players than they showed on Sunday and are more than capable of getting it sorted.

My other change would be playing only one DM (McKain) with Diego starting with Leo and Troy

I'd also have Costa on the bench.

The best thing for me about Sunday was the potential Greenacre and Ifill showed - with time together and match fitness (Ifill) they are more than capable for scoring plenty - we just need more creativity (Diego, with Daniel coming off the bench) to give them the chances.

I'm optimistic about this Sunday as long as Ricki is prepared to chance his arm a little and move away from what is a pretty tired and unsuccessful 2AM and 2DM line-up.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

One bad performance from the back four doesn't mean you should change them for the hell of it...

I agree Whitby boy......I'm not angsting too much about the defense. I reckon its easily fixed without changing the lineup much. We have some very good defensive players. They have played together and know each others play. They will sort it out this week in training.

They just need to work on their positional play....the way they hold their shape, work out who marks who and communicate better.

The attack is a different story. Ifill and Greenacre will be a good striking duo, but it will take time. Meanwhile we need to work on the problem that dogged us all last year. The transfer of the ball through the midfield and the ability to create chances for the strikers. Did'nt see much against Noocastle to suggest its fixed.

TBH we could have van Nistlerooy and Morientes striking for us and it wouldn't matter make much difference. Unless you give  the front guys some some decent balls they won't make much impact. The problems are manyfold and have been widely covered. But it is frustrating to see the neglect of such basic things as player movement, accurate passing etc.

This game against perth is a good opportunity for us get some points on the board. We are entering a season make or break period. The next 5 or 6 games include Melb, Sydney Adelaide. Brisbane....its a tough run, with many away games. If we don't pull finger we risk being bottom two by round 6.

Ifill isn't fully fit and it'll take a few weeks for him to be fully fit based on what I read.

And please don't say 'end of' as if your opinion is final and not just opinion but fact.  It's very annoying having to read it.

But knowing Ricki it is more likely Barbarouses will be benched.  A mistake in my books but I'm not coach.

If you change the back four it is just as likely someone else will have a bad game who comes in. Stability is usually the best appoach with a back four unless someone is consistently out of form.

well if I'm perfectly honest, Costa is not "all that" as some of you make him out to be.

i don't see the big deal.

sure he's quick and has a bit of skill but, he has A LOT to learn.

imo he's too young to start ahead of Greenacre or Ifill.

bring him on at say round the 65 -70th mark to let him get game time and see how he does.

and that my friend is END OF (imo)

I think you will find that Costa had quite a bit of match time in preseason games...without setting the world on fire! if he had bagged some goals preseason then maybe he would be ranked higher...
Like lots of others in YF I have a soft spot for Costa and I hope he does well but in reality the fact that he didn't even travel to Noocastle suggests he's way down the pecking order.

They put a lot of effort into getting Ifill....him and Greenacre will start as the leading strikers. Im afraid even the young Chinese bloke might get a chance ahead of Costa, now...to see how he goes.

Surprisingly, I think Dodd was actually the more solid and consistent defender for us. Durante has never really lived up to his billing at the Phoenix. Based on how good he was when he was at the Jets he really should be playing a lot better than he has shown us so far.

I'd still start him alongside Sigmund in the match against Perth, but he really needs to prove himself. I don't think he has been a real standout performer (ie. top three on the pitch) in any Phoenix match I've watched.

I really hope costa makes the bench. He needs it. But if Ricki has the balls to drop Brown, then he will put him on the bench. So Brown / Daniel / Costa?
But will he want to waste the bench with Ferrante or Lia again or will he venture for another striker.

This home game we must play Diego in AM seeing as he has been pointed as our creativity and at home, we have to score.

Not suprising at all to be honest

Still think we should've tried much harder to keep Dodd. Durante is just not that good. Dodd isn't that good either but he makes up for it with hard work. Was one of NQ's best players on the weekend.
