I'm not condemning him and if we hadn't re-signed Smith and Sanchez and spoken in the press about not using all our import spots I'd be happy with the signing.  Based on statements to date that fills our expected import slots and we still don't have a Right Back or a striker who will score double figure goals.

With Brown gone our squad currently has taken a step back from last season and all we have left to fill it are local's and Aussies and we need two starting players.

If they do chop the finals to four sides in half an hour there is zero chance we'll be one of the four.

I thought the import slot comment was made before they considered this signing ie they didn't think we would use them up with players from Europe or South America or whatever, so this doesn't necessarily mean he's our last imported player.

And with Muscat apparently playing mid this year you could argue he's replaced Brown - at least in terms of an A League midfielder, albeit not the same sort of player.

As for the final four comment, we came 4th last year - no reason why we can't again! I'm optimistic (for now)

                               Sanchez

           Totori               Ifill             Brockie

IMHO those front four could create a lot of goalscoring chances if they are given the chance to play with the ball at their feet

...add Pantelis and we've got creative coming out our ears.  What we don't have is someone who plays as a striker other than Pavs so not one.

Disturbingly it makes me wish Dylan MacAllister would come back.

yeah im thinking positively and this is a solid side. However does lack a RB and genuine goal scorer or aerial threat. However if Dirty is in behind these 3 and the solid base of smith and muscat (or lia) then we may end up keeping the ball on the ground

2 goals in the NSWPL last weekend. The way things are turning out with signings, you might get your wish.

I would take Dylan MacAllister back if we had the chance, he is a donkey but he has a physical presence in the box, and could get on the end of crosses from our many, many wingers (Ifill, Brockie, Bertos, Totori, Pantelis).

If Totori counted as a local player, he would be a good signing. However, he takes up one of the import slots that could otherwise be used to strengthen the team though. Not quite what the owners promised us at the start of the off-season.

I don't believe there is any NZer likely to come back who is up to it and he did have a pretty good rate of goals/game for us.  Of the options I can think of (assuming no import, no Killen, no returning from overseas Aus) he's be the best option available.

However, i suspect our ill-informed owners think they have sorted our striker issue by signing a couple of wide players who fill in up front.

My biggest issue. Could someone with a bit of power (maybe you guys on the pod) ask Ricki or the owners straight up if we are going to get a striker?

Cause I suspect they would say theyve signed 2... whereas we havtn really got the type of guy we have always needed

You don`t think Totori is going to cross or pass the ball, do you ??

Yeh- we are still a decent goalscorer short. Totori is unproven in the A-league, could be a hit or a dud. What's his visa status? He's lived in NZ a while now...

Think we are going to miss Greenie a looooooooooooooooooot. In fact, it's almost worth a bet that he's going to start every game this season to. No one in that line up is known for their ability to hold up the ball or control possession.

This article quotes Domey saying that Greenacre probably won't be playing next season: http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/243332,wellington-phoenix-sign-solomons-striker.aspx?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=442+Twitter+Feed

Totori's signing all but confirms Chris Greenacre's permanent shift to the coaching staff.

The Englishman had a dual player-coaching role last season.

"We're negotiating with Greenie now in terms of his position at the club. We are looking at Greenie to maybe be in an assistant coach role," Dome said.

"He sees the potential in that and the ability to take his career to the next level."

From what I saw at the Nations Cup, he never looked to bring others into play, did all the work himself.

in a way, we have always lacked another player who will create for himself. Greeny never did this, ut fed it out to others. Having another guy who is going to run past players is gonna add that extra level of attack. Hope he can step up!

Yeah but that may have been partly his instructions from the coach or the level of his team-mates. I think he used to get a few assists in the NZFC. Calling him a targetman who can hold up the ball is a bit of a laugh though

Greenie for TeeDubs with the yoof he'll be working with?  It would be quite cool to watch him knocking them in there.

As for the statements on Totori you have to wonder if any of those making the decisions have seen him play.  He's more the Pacific Brockie than the Pacific Greenie which is what they are trying to make him out to be.

Ricki would have made the decision. Do you mean comments?

I'm quite happy. Haven't seen a lot of him, only against NZ in the pool play. Looks pretty good and shouldn't be expensive. It would be great for oceania football if he does well.

Is anyone a littl excited about having a wee bit of pace up front for the first time. Some sanchez magic through balls could help make this chap deadly!

I'm looking forward to the...erm...pacific "flair" that he might bring. After rewatching the Nations Cup highlights and watching him belt the shit out of it on numberous occasions, it'll be good to see him giving it a go in a Nix shirt.

Im with you. While a little unproven, i think it could work out well. It would be nice to see a little bit of a different attacking style.

From what i sw, while he can miss spectacularly, he can also just pull the trigger rather than fluffing around with the ball.

Who knows what he can become with a good coach and team around him. I'd rather have a team that plays together awesomely, than one player who has to try and carry a mediocre team.

Not pleased.  Two years on a player who was a good ASB Premiership player but not at the level Sigmund was.  This is a huge step down from what we were given to believe we were going to see up front.

Look for another season of Manny at the back, a couple of State league rejects, an ineffectual midfield and no one who can score the goals we need to make us better.

New dawn my fucking arse.

HN said it best and I concur. I hope that as Barry mentioned this means there is a lot of salary cap spare for a damn good foreign right back.

Why a two year deal? Didn't Sanchez and Smith only get one? How do you justify a two year deal on a foriegn player of unproven quality at A-league level?

I hope this works out but I would've taken a target man over pace at the moment...

woot, im very excited about this! we've had target men before and theyve failed. i think its great to sign a different type of player. I cant wait to see ifill/dani/smith/pantellis( unless hes moved on??) feeding brockie and totori up front.

Hard News needs to stop hanging around Danny Nay.  Kind of over Greenacre's tireless work/4 goals a season.  Surely, Totori would be cheap as peanuts?  As long as he "pulls the trigger" often.  I'll be fine.  Skillz.  Gordon Watson knows his shit.  Just need a marquee.  Sweet.

I wonder if we will spend half of the salary cap this year? Isnt there a minimum of like 85% has to spent?

Its gonna have to be Dani Alves we sign

Totori looked pretty sharp in the OFC, heck if he can run the ball and shoot liek he did on that crappy deck think of what he'll do on a quality pitch like the RoF! I'd hope he'd be a cheap prospect but he certqainly fills greenies spot as a front man, with him and Ifill upfron with maybe a younger striker as a sub we may see less of Greenie this season - like we were expecting last year. Next big signing a quality midfielder!

Totori will get figured out in the A-League faster than News can down a Steak and Cheese pie.

To me this seems like a massive overreaction based on two or three games playing for the Solomons. If we were so in love with him, wouldn't we have signed him a few years ago when he was knocking in the goals in the NZFC? Not saying he can't do a job for us, but just questioning the timing of it, and the depth of thought and scouting behind the decision

Except the owners have said we're not signing a marquee, rumours abound that there is no interest in paying a reasonable amount for goal-scorer, and they have stated we'll only use 4 of the 5 import slots.

Sure circumstances change, but on what they have publicly stated we can look forward to a midfield of Lia, Smith and Sanchez with Manny forced to play Right back and 3 attacking midfield players as an attacking line.  Pardon me if that rings alarm bells for me.

Concur with Hard News, nothing new to really excite me, and make me rush out and buy my season ticket.

Definately worried about our depth at the back. Current back ups, Lia, Downey and Manny if he will. No tall timber to cover CB if Dura and Siggy fall over

wouldnt surprise me if Manny played Mid and Lia at RB in the first game, then they will remember it doesnt work and revert back.

I think we will still sign another import and the 4 out of 5 thing was before Ricki saw Totori at the OFC

Indeed and I don't see where Centre Back cover will come from.  Branch?  Musa?  Raj?  Myers? No import, unlikely to find an Aussie better than Griffiths.  Unless Boyens or Boxall is coming home it's a bit bleak.
