That could work. Good to have a chant sorted for a player not yet confirmed as signed.

He's finished his Sophomore year at Fairfield I think which means he's well over 20.  I just assume he's back for Summer hols unless he's packed it in or run out of time on study visa.

Herbert said Mark Paston, another who missed a large chunk of last season through injury, is on his way back and is set to play both games although for New Zealand under-17 custodian Michael O'Keefe will travel as goalkeeping cover.

Perhaps the Herald was just confused. Anyway, I think he'd make a good replacement for Crowther.Doloras2011-07-19 16:41:02

MEDIA RELEASE

For immediate release

PHOENIX SIGN TSATTALIOS

Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert is delighted to have secured the signature of former Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets fullback Niko Tsattalios.

Confirming the signing today, Herbert said he had been impressed with the 21-Year-old since he arrived on trial a fortnight ago.

He has done everything right and fitted into the squad well, Herbert said.

With such a long time till the season starts we have been taking our time and making sure we sign the right sort of player.

Niko fits the bill well. He is a natural fullback who has had A-League experience and it is a bonus that he falls into our under-21 bracket.

I thought he was the best player on the park in our 2-1 win over the Junior All Whites on Sunday.

The challenges will keep coming for him but I am sure he is capable of meeting them.

If I needed to play him in the A-League tomorrow I wouldnt hesitate.

Tsattalios had a huge smile on his face today when the squad was told he had been given a contract.

It will be an honour to play for the Phoenix and Im delighted that Ricki has given me the opportunity.

Ive been out of professional football for one and a half years and cant wait to get back into it.

Tsattalios made his debut for Sydney FC as a 16-year-old and was with the club for almost three years but didnt get as many opportunities as he would have liked.

A six months spell with Newcastle for their Asian Champions League campaign under Branko Culina who had also been his coach at Sydney followed, but with no professional offers on the table after his stint with Newcastle Tsattalios stepped down into the New South Wales Premier League with Sydney Olympic and, this season, with Sutherland Sharks.

It was Sharks coach Robbie Stanton who gave me the confidence to believe I could get back into professional football and I am grateful to him for that, Tsattalios said.

When my agent told me there was a bit of interest from Wellington I couldnt wait to get there and give it my best shot.

I feel like Im starting from scratch with a clean slate and am really excited.

The Phoenix boys are an amazing bunch. I couldnt believe the reception I got right from the time I stepped off the plane.

They were immediately offering me lifts to training and just made things easy for me.

Going on trial can be a really intimidating experience and here I was going into a dressing room full of internationals.

They made me welcome at training and it was the same when I played my first game. Dura (captain Andrew Durante) must have given me the ball at least 12 times in the first half and that gave me confidence.

Now I just want to get stuck in and show Ricki he has made the right decision.

Makes up for loss of Hingert!
Permalink Permalink

Tsattalios has a longer, more foreign-sounding name than Hingert so he is obviously the better player.

Was sh*te at Sydney - pretty boy, didn't play well - but never really got a real shot so will wait until he has a few games under his belt. Not a huge risk because he's U21.valeo2011-07-19 19:52:10

Hurry up Ricki! Its only 82 days before kick off and we still have at least 5 more players to get.

If you all can't see the writing on the wall then you need to take off your rose tinted glasses.

Exactly!

I don't think anyway can say our signings so far have been bad.

Not spectacular, but I quite like the approach of the signings so far. Would be better than signing loads of unproven guys. All our new signings have been shining in the games so far.

The fact that Tsats is a yoof and can play either side(apparently) gets me excited, and we now have 5 signings to look forward to rather than be sad about.

We still have three senior players on the way. All who could be imports (I think?? ) Plus two young kiwis(or auz) who will be very keen to prove themselves.

I'd go 1 of chettleburgh or Lovemore (depending on how we fill up the senior spots) plus 1 of Bran, Musa or Rowe.
I'm excited

Yeah he's said that a few times.  Also said he's looking for first choice attackers and keeper or at least players who will compete for starting spots in those roles.

we pretty much have a striker and a number ten on the way. Both imports we would assume, unless Rory gets sent a message to come down here.

Think those two positions are the make and break of our side this year. If both are good enough to push out others from the starting 11, then that will give us a strong squad all over, and currently we are looking to have quite a good amount of depth... bring on end of August!
