Wasn't Warner pretty rubbish at Celtic?
But yes, this produces about as much excitement as when we signed the fitness coach...

STRIKER. CREATIVE MIDFIELDER. CENTRE HALF.

Thanks.

I'd say we are marginally better off than last year (assuming we sign Mehmet) as we have more depth at fullback, which has been a problem position.  But we're definitely lacking something without Marco - and last year we had very obvious flaws in the middle of the park that are still unsolved.

I wasn't really paying attention to Sanchez at Weka park, mainly focused on Billy.. Is he ANY good at all? Would he be a good replacement for Rojas or Ward? Ricki seems to feel good about him..

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Forgot about Ward, he was decent.  Surprised he hasn't been picked up anywhere else yet.  Quotes from Ricky on Sanchez - sound like he needs a decent game on Sunday:

As for the other two, it appears Sanchez, an attacking midfielder, is the closest to being offered a contract in spite of being hampered by a thigh injury early in his trial period.

"Dani is over that injury and he had a bit of time (in a friendly) at the weekend. It's a chance for him to really make a mark," said Herbert.

"I kind of like what I see. I think he's done a good job for us in the small time that he's had. You're looking at potential more than anything. Now he is fully recovered he can show us.

"It's probably his last chance. Not being negative but it will probably be his last chance to give us what we need."

I will be waiting with eagerness to hear how Sanchez shapes on saturday, I like how Ricki describes the situation with him, "potential more than anything". Show us some silky Spanish skills there Sanchez.Azevo2011-08-17 20:56:08

This time last year very few of us had any idea that Marco would become the phenom he has. Who knows but that we won't be pleasantly shocked by some other youth signing.

That glass is always half full with you isn't it Doloras??  Will just have to wait and see who we sign I guess.

The issue is that the aussie youth market is well picked over by their clubs, and we've watched the U17s and U20s and Marco and Payne were the clear standouts.

We may have more depth at fullback but we are lacking depth in every other position on the park! 2 centre backs at the club? One out and out striker? 2 goalkeepers in their mid-late 30's. We are struggling big time IMO and need at least 3 quality signings, not just players to make up the numbers.

As for Ward, I don't know why we let him go.

The team is basically back to the one of 2 years ago, and while they did well, everyone else has probably improved since then, while our lot are 2 years older and the likes of Greenacre is getting on a bit.

All fair points Steve-O.  Word is that we wanted to keep Ward but he wanted to go back to Melb

The league overall is stronger though HN.  Our team last year was about the same as the season before but we finished 3 places lower...the teams at the top have jumped up a level, the identity of those teams has changed.

Maybe not EVERY team but with our current squad I don't think 4th place is close to achievable unfortunately.

As I say though, 3-4 new signings and I would maybe have a different view, depending who the signings are of course.

Another cr+p reserve keeper at the nix,
Not called Randolph the Rubbishman without some reason or Tony Bonus for the number of win bonuses [at Liverpool] without getting on the park.

Blackburn looked at him for this year and gave him the big thumb down.

Look below for his value! to any of his clubs, it's NIX to use another term.
Unless you are Millwall who went into administration at that time, so playing 200 odd games for a club going downhill. OOPs maybe a bad move by the nix a bad omen there.
Theo of Dragons Den fame bailed them out.

Warner was playing Masters football last year, not sure of this year may have been sacked?

Unless the youth spots get filled with some Aussie/Kiwi class and the remaining foreign spots are taken by some decent late 20 somethings this is going to be a painful season as the others have moved on quite a bit as has been stated by others.

People seem to lose sight of the fact that keepers (unlke outfield players) can hold their career at a higher level for later in to their 30s and generally tend to peak in their early 30s. Young keepers traditionally do not perform as well, if you contrast that to young outfield players.

I think the issue is that he's played about 50 games in the last 6 or so seasons.  If post 30 is his "peak" he seems to have missed it.  He has rarely been first choice in his entire career.  I'm sure he'll do a job but it's a pretty so so signing.

Vadar he's 37 not say 32 which would make your argument a bit more valid...

schwarzer is older than him and hes still class. even being a reserve keeper in the places hes been is still far higher than a-league. common sense really.

Agreed.  Which is why he is a starting keeper in the premiership

Disagree.  Reserve keeper is the one place many clubs can afford to skimp - even at premiership level there are some very average backup keepers.

It is definitely a good thing that he has recent football under his belt, agree with you guys there.

Like I said before I'm sure he'll do a fine job for us.  Just not overly excited by the signing

mmmm yeah i spose to an extent but you cant tell me just anyone gets that role if sh*t hits the fan you want someone semi decent there.

I think a good, solid signing. Great pedigree, old (meh), but definitely competition for the number one.

How many goals has he scored?

Im not sure that a reserve goalkeeper is the best use of an import slot but I guess time will tell. I found myself getting quite excited about the nix signing a new player but am distinctly underwhelmed by this. I know that people will say that goalkeepers last longer than outfield players and that some dont hit their peak until mid thirties but 37 as a new signing?  to be hopes that he has more luck than Paston in the injury stakes or we'll have 2 dodgy goalkeepers

I remember when we got a few games at Fulham in the EPL, and he was quite impressive.

I think this is a good signing, with Paston's injury worries it's nice to have a decent number two.

Don't give a flying f**k if he's an import player or not, clearly Ricki knows what he's doing with his foreign players and there is clearly a spot in the squad for Warner.

Looking forward to seeing him on the park with all his experience and seeing what he can add to the training off the park. 3rd goal keeper choice will be interesting

Welcome from me also

i think a young keeper could do well training with the nix now, two very experienced keepers here at the nix with us, time to start passing some of that onto the next gen.

Happy with Warner's signature!

Comes with a wealth of experience IMHO.

Yeah but PWF said it well in the other thread when he listed the squad and what needs to happen. We have two import spots left (had three before Warndogg signed), and we need a striker and an attacking midfielder, and two youth players. So who gives a sh*t if this guy is an import as well?!

We can still sign two overseas players, then two young Aussies or Kiwis (plus another keeper if Ricki wants) and go from there.
