However browns gonna start and Sanchez will be bench, we may not want that, but deep down I can't see ricki dropping his beloved Timmy.

I'd probably like to see this starting line up as although only one out and out striker included im sure that pantelis and ifill will contribute goals between them.......im sure though that Ricki will probably want to start with Tim brown and leo bertos

Agree with all of this. Especially the tim brown and bertos bit.

Think id prefer to see ifill up top and bertos on if we dont find another striker. But wouldnt mind this lineup.

Lia and manny in the mids for mine is too defensive....at least with brown you get some go forward from the middle of the park.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Permalink Permalink

but you would have sanchez who would be more go forward than brown.

in the formation above Sanchez appears to be playing just behind greenie in an AMC role, that's a little too high to be picking the ball up from the defence, he needs a supporting playing to bring the ball up with him, brown would do that, as would manny lia not so much.

Lia used to play a bit higher up the field if memory serves me correct...as for tim brown...too little, not enough, waste of a slot on the playing roster

Lia improved towards the end of the season though, I thought.

Going by last season's form Lia provides more to the team than Brown, I also really want Dani to get a decent number of games so there is only room for one of Lia/Brown.
Come on Ricki drop Brown until Lia/Manny lose form or are suspended......

The headline says: "They won me over with a paella" and continues: "The Malagan, first Spanish player in the A-League, says that he's living very well in New Zealand and is expecting much from the new season which is arriving."

Google Translate for the rest, or wait until I get back in the afternoon. Interestingly there is a lot of talk about the Spanish contingent at ACFC.

On September 5 was made official the signing of Dani Sanchez for the Wellington Phoenix, becoming the first Spanish man to play in the Australian A-League (not in New Zealand, where Auckland is home to Manel Expsito, Albert Riera
and Angel Via, plus the coach, Ramon Tribulietx). The player, 26 years old, convinced during the trial month and has already become part of the club's history ... And in Spanish football.

- You've been bit in Wellington, Spanish club What could compare? (By size, fans, quality, etc.)

It is difficult to compare with a Spanish team, I would say that the stadium is like in the First Division, the followers do not know yet, but the sport here is rugby and I do not believe that so many as in Spain. For quality equivalent to second division team in Spain.

- How do you reach the opportunity to make a test with Wellington?

Long story, but you sum up, through my representatives (Mark Holmes and Paco Flores) invited me to do a test at the Gold Coast (Australia). They could not sign me because they had all the seats occupied by foreigners and that the possibility of coming out to try to Wellington Phoenix.

- What has surprised you most so far from the city, the team ...?

I was surprised by the union on the computer are like a family, most have been playing together 4 or 5 years and very good atmosphere.

- How do you see there that a New Zealand team competing in the Australian league? Is it a pride for its supporters or as a kind of 'betrayal'?

Actually I have not heard any comment because we play in the Australian league, I think both are pretty good 'Aussies' (Australian) and the Kiwis (New Zealanders).

Kind of betrayal I do not think, being the only professional team in New Zealand, I guess I will be proud to compete in the A-league and full support.

Manel Expsito-, Spanish playing enAuckland says he was surprised by the quality of life of the people there. Can we confirm?

If the quality of life here is very good, and that we are now in "winter".

-You played your first match in Wellington bajartedelavin 2 hours after. Do not you gone crazy?

Actually yes, I got up at 5.30 am on the Gold Coast (Australia) and came to Wellington (New Zealand) at 5 pm and then going to the field and played the second half. I did not leave the party very happy because I found myself physically ill and I knew that normally could do better but hey, at the end everything went well and I have signed.

- Who has been your biggest support these first weeks on the team? What player would you highlight?

All partners have treated me very well from the first day but especially Niko arrives Tsattalios (physiotherapist). It should be mentioned that we had a week off and I was crazy to return to Spain to see my family but could not go because they just go and return are 4 days, so I invited her to come to his home in Sydney. He and his family treated me great, I also won it a bit I made a paella loved it.

I could not highlight any particularly, we have several international players in New Zealand, Malta, Barbados ... but highlight the group in general.

- In the Scottish Premier Third, and hence aAustralia. Do you feel you've stepped back in your career?

I think I've been taking steps forward year by year, and not at all think this is a step backwards, upside down, the level of the A-league is pretty good but not have much impact and I do well and continue taking steps below, is my goal.

- You left the quarry of Malaga, in Spain fashion team. How do you get the news coming from Lacoste del Sol? What should aim this year for Malaga after your investment?

I am very happy and excited with all that is living today Malaga, in the economic situation that is Spanish football, Malaga are privileged and I'm excited to see players like Baptista, Cazorla, etc, playing with ex-partners Jess Gmez and mine as Apoo.

Personally I think they will get the European places. Besides I think they are doing very well, not everything is money and signings, things like create 'academies' around town, agreements with other clubs in Andalusia, a sports town, etc ... They are making it big in Malaga all respects. I want to thank from here to the Sheikh is doing everything the Malaga and Malaga.

Griffiths now confirmed.

Not the most exciting signing, but a signing none-the-less.
I am going to assume he fits inside the u21 spot

Not sure why this guy was chosen ahead of giving James Musa another stint?

For me, basically Griffiths has A-League experience, whereas Musa does not. Musa showed his inexperience in the few games he played last season.

Distribution wise I thought Musa was appalling in the U20s - at least 50% of his passes, and I use that term loosely, seemed to end up as GKs or throw ins.

But defending on the ground he looked very good.  Problem is that as a 19/20/21 year old wanting a gig in pro football you do almost need to be the finished article or close to it.  And he really needed a lot of work

So we have signed Griffiths.....9 games in the A-League.

Well.....that is exciting.
If Dura or Siggy get injured or suspended then this kid is half of our central defense.......I will give him the benefit of doubt until I have seem him play but IMO we should NEVER, EVER sign central defenders who have little or no experiance. FFS there must be heaps of older CD's who have had lots of experiance around the globe....nearing the end of their careers, moving down from higher Leagues who would jump at the chance for a short season playing in the sun in the A-League.

At least he can take a good long throw. Griffiths might be good at giving out drink bottles at the end of a long training session but I don't think he'll help much during a game.

Saying we signed him because of 'A-League Experience' is kind of silly considering he's barely had any and when he did he was pretty horrid

Ah well, benefit of the doubt until he pulls on a nix shirt..valeo2011-10-01 02:53:57

Hey guys.  I finally decided to make a user name and post on this forum as I've been checking for the latest Phoenix news every day on this forum as I support wellington as my a league club as I am an old South melbourne supporter and hate both victory and heart.

Griffiths isnt to bad of a signing.  I used to watch perth glory quite abit as i liked their squad.  I found that griffiths wasnt that bad of a player he just got caught in the wrong places at the wrong time.  Thats why he copped to red cards last season.  I think shows a lot of promise and with a bit of experience and knowledge he could be an alright defender.  Not an outstanding one but a servicable player.  He was at blackburn rovers youth so hes got some eurpean experience there.  Lets hope that Ricki stays ture to his word and we have more news on signings by tuesday.

Go Phoenix!
