Perth giveth, and Perth taketh away…

Um, Perth had the worse goal difference last season. Was this guy responsible for some of Sails keeping.  Not sure if I'm excited by this.  Sorry to be a downer

I don't think he was a GK coach with the ALM side.
Looks the Glory Academy and ALW sides.

Left Perth Nov 2024 by the looks.

Cheap coaching pick up one assumes. More money for players maybe?!

His experiance as Academy operations manager could be helpful at the club. As for GK coach we will have to wait and see. Both Josh and KH are works in progress

Experience or inexperience is not directly related to competency. Of course it helps but he could be a very good coach and you wouldn't even know - maybe just hasn't been given a shot at senior coaching just yet.

Provided he has a good knowledge base and gets along well with players and staff he might be a perfect fit. Keep in mind our goal keeps are just learning the basics of what it takes to be a professional. Dylan may be perfectly good enough to continue their development.

Another words I don't think anyone should have an issue with the appointment provided the club has done their due diligence during the hiring process.

I hope he can cope with our shaky defense and goalkeeper...

Gill all but confirmed Chiefy's new assistant coach is a Brazilian who has some experience in Japan and some proficiency with the Japanese language

Would make a lot of sense. Big Japanese connection in Sao Paolo especially. Maybe open up the door for another Brazilian?

Bring on Zico, wishful thinking though.
But yes does make sense to have someone that can speak their language to get the most out of the players.

Welcome Kelly Guimarães. 👏

Did the odds of us picking up a Brazilian #10 just go up?

Brilliant player back in his day, remember watching him tear it up for fc Tokyo and Cruzerio.. typical old school Brazilian attacking player he was

Very cool. Looks like a great appointment.

Also, how good is it that we've gone outside the conventional and picked up someone fresh, rather than recycling through other A-League also rans?

Fresh ideas, and a fresh approach, and now we just need a few more links to be completed in the player recruitment department and my optimism will have somewhat recovered from the despair of last season.

Imagine the likes of the younger brigade - LBS, GSR, and Walker,  will be relishing the chance to work with a guy who seemingly encourages a bit of free licence going forward. Good stuff.

The thought of him working with our young attacking talent sure makes you hope that they take it all in. You would think it has to be good for their development particularly.

100%

Cynically I was thinking that unconventional channels also work in reverse. Our best chance of getting anyone in at all is if they don't know us.

Not my opinion, just being a dick

I do think that the Phoenix would be a very attractive place to come and work.

Great proactive signing.

He will hopefully be able to relate to the Japanese boys.

I don’t think the Chief has the ability to successfully implement an attacking change of style, so it will be all down to this chap.

Hopefully Chief focuses on the defence and allows this guy free reign

Also hoping with his background and contacts that he brings in a Brazilian number 10.

I'm sure GSR's Brazilian dad who is apparently a footballl coach in Hong Kong, will be particularly pleased with this appointment. Hopefully GSR can stay injury free this season, and showcase the talent that has impressed those in the know. We saw glimpses of it with the FA Cup game in Darwin.

This guy could be our next coach.

I just wonder, how much of this is Gilly (the club) and how much is Chiefy.

It will be very interesting to see how our defence performs this season without Griffiths.

No designated defence coach this season?

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/07/16/experienced-brazilian-joins-coaching-staff-of-phoenix-mens-a-league-squad/

Kelly Guimarães’ appointment means there’s just one role to be filled in the Wellington Phoenix men’s coaching staff, with a lead analyst/second assistant to be appointed in the near future.

Other new members of the backroom staff have already been appointed.

Former Perth Glory goalkeeper coach Dylan Cope has replaced Ruben Parker, who was the men’s goalkeeper coach for the past two and a half seasons.

Matthew Hastings, Grayson Harwood and Sebastian Bayliss have come on board as the men’s operations manager, head physiotherapist and kitman, respectively, while Weijie Lim has signed on for a fifth season as the team’s head physical performance scientist.

They will be joined by rehab physiotherapist Jamie Hassett and analyst Tyron Curtis, who will continue to work across both the men’s and women’s first teams.

Given the experience we have lost from defense you have to hope they sign someone experienced. Griffith was great initially but like the whole team our defense fell away dramatically towards the end of last season.

I often saw Griffith's defensive prowess referred to as a coaching strength or preference. I'm not sure that it was ever formal.

So I assume that the two coaches, plus the vacant 2nd assistant / analyst will take care of the entire gambit.

For reference, clubs in top leagues would normally run with 2-3 fitness coaches, 2-3 keeper coaches, 2-3 performance analysts, and 4-5 'actual' coaches including the head coach and assistant. I'm pretty sure A-League teams normally have 3 'actual' coaches with possibly another analyst.

I assume the analyst's main task is to slowly rub his thumb and forefinger on his chin and say "hmmmmm" a lot.

I'm wondering what the Phoenix is doing to develop qualified Kiwi coaches - it seems the Academy and Senior Teams have a lot of foreigners in coaching roles.

They are definitely bringing through some local young coaches with ALW & girls Academy teams.

Foreign Coaches and Assistants (Men's and Women's Team) for the last 20 years off the top of my head:

Merrick - Australian
Greenacre - English
Buckingham - English
Kalezic - Bosnian
Rudan - Australian
Talay - Australian
Italiano - Australian
Griffiths - Australian
Gould - English
Temple - English
Coleman - English
Lewis - English
Lawrence - English
Priestman - English
Guimaraes - Brazilian
Cope - South African
Shepherd - English
Schiltgen - USA

Kiwi Coaches and Assistants off the top of my head:

Herbert
Jacobs
Holmes
Parker

I've probably missed some, but it seems like Kiwi coaches have continued to be overlooked for many years...

So since when has it been the Phoenixs job to develop NZ coaches. Arnt there certain qualifications that A League coaches need.
Also are you absolutely certain  that Kiwis havnt been considered or are you assuming thats the case.
Dont think a Kiwi should be just given a job because they are a Kiwi they first need to be qualified and capable of doing the required job and then importantly be able to work with those already there.

Licenses often the issue. And lack of applicants too.

Lots of NZ teams are coached by foreigners. Most (well, over half) Central League clubs are coached by non-kiwis.

The academy has a few kiwis involved

I'd assume that:
Greenacre
Buckingham
Gould
Temple

Etc
Are all NZ citizens and happy to call NZ home. More so than "kiwi" coaches such as Fallon.

NZ has one of the largest immigrant population in the world.
