Phoenix Ownership - Rob says FTFFA (Part 1)

During the press conference they mentioned about broadening the base, and making the Phoenix the pinnacle for development of players. Did they expand more on their plans on Campbell Live?

Not sure if it was covered elsewhere.  But, the owners aren't football people, so I doubt they recognise what that entails.

I don't know why you are so cynical, it's hardly unachievable to have the Phoenix as the pinnacle of the game in NZ.

They were talking about reserve/youth/feeder teams JD.  Which is a big step up from what the nix are now.

I don't really know if Terry was "a football person" when he started the Phoenix

We had a youth/reserve team last season

You're making out like this is some impossible dream.  Kevin Fallon basically runs a full time academy at MAGS, how difficult would it be to do the same thing at Wellington College but with the backing of a profesisonal football club?  It's not THAT difficult, it just needs some though and yes, some money.  Just because a strategy hasn't been figured out so far doesn't mean it can't be done.  And I've thought about this for 60 seconds so it's not foolproof, just an example.

And you know what, "football people" aren't always the solution.  Sometimes they're part of the problem because everything is "too difficult".  Maybe it needs someone from outside the game to get involved and think laterally.

we also had more staff.

I just think that people should take every statement on day 1 as gospel. I'm sure they will be spending plenty of time getting the fountains right first before they want to decide whether to splash cash on extras.

Wouldn't be Coll.

Phoenix have higher standards.

The concept was around a couple of years ago with Scots College as the school.

Could be wrong but pretty sure colls been looking at having a professional football academy, and James Dean has a point when he says would coll want the nix, I heard they were in talks with Barca.

Like I say, people shouldn't expect everything to happen overnight.

I'd imagine it will take a while to get their heads around running the nix, work out the management structure, work out how much money it's gonna cost etc.

Ok that's fine, no-one is expecting miracles.

But 2 months ago when it was suggested that new owners would be end up coming people were told that we were dreaming and that no-one would be interested in owning the club.

Now we have those new owners we're told that they won't be able to do what they say they will.  Well I'm going to wait to see what they come up with and give them the benefit of the doubt rather than writing things off on day 1, just like was done with the prospect of the new owners.

From the press conference I got a very good impression that they were going to be very "eyes open" about the whole business and would be realistic about what can and can't be done. The feeder clubs for development was more long-term, and maybe as they become more familiar with the club and its constraints they might have to scale back their initial aims.

They also acknowledged they knew nothing about running a club.

The whole tone of both Rob Morrison's and Gareth Morgan's prepared speeches and the Q&A was extremely encouraging.

I'm really looking forward to this season now - just hope the team can concentrate on the football thingy and the fans turn up.

Except Rob Morrison mentioned in the press conference he coached some highschool second eleven this year.
Anyone know any more about that? Which school etc? Were they successful?

Does this provide a legitimate reason to sack Ricki then?

I mean, Rob Morrison has a recent record of putting trophies in the cabinet - does Ricki?

Theses guys havent done a thing wrong. They kept in the background, gave Terry every chance, saved the team, saved it in Wellington, are solidly financed, have a 5 yr plan,  and you are mocking them, saying they dont know how to do it.

Edit. Cant see any point in being negative about them in any way at this stage

Hey they didn't decide to put money into the club just yesterday. They've known this was a prospect many moons ago and businessmen of their standing would have put a lot of work into what they needed/wanted to do long before they finally took over. If they are committed to 5 years [as they say] they are going to want to make this thing work and we are probably going to have to get used to decisions at the club being made on prudent financial grounds rather than from the heart.

I haven't seen anyone complaining actually - 2B has made the observation that some of the statements made by WellNix are very "aspirational" (to employ a journo technique).

I feel like Burgess is have a big spurt session - all his Christmasses have come at once. Good op piece from Woodie and even Worthington is improving his writing.

If you want complaints I still think the DP is a sorry excuse for the capital's newspaper and that the Granny Herald despite calling poofball soccer is unfortunately better (and that by the way isn't a compliment to the Herald).

Anyway, post-ownership transfer, the ongoing question is whether Terry can stave off bankruptcy. Did that creditors' meeting go ahead, or did Terry just go off to get sh1tfaced after the presser?

Woah! Gareth Morgan is talking about selling shares to the fans?

The new Phoenix owners expect the team to bleed money for at least three years but want to offer fans a financial stake in the club.

Wellington-based consortium Welnix assumed ownership of the cash-strapped club yesterday after Terry Serepisos was forced to relinquish control.

Consortium member Gareth Morgan told The Dominion Post he hoped to give Yellow Fever fans the chance to buy into the club.

"We would like to think that, if it is successful, we can involve more capital participation from the supporters. We'd like to see the Yellow Fever and beyond those guys actually having a stake in the team in terms of shareholders."

I'm not posting any Burgess's story on the front page.  After significantly misquoting Smith and talking his statements out of context yesterday, and then having the audacity to ask for an opinion piece, he can go get f**ked.

This!

Some sections of the media finally got the result they desired so they should now all just f*ck off and let us get on with supporting our football team!!!

Why would I have sour grapes?

Combined with an earlier post about not being football people, I figured you must have. Maybe I got it wrong. Time will tell how good they are for the club, but I am really looking forward to the season now under their management.

In my opinion this is an absolutely stunning result for the Nix.

I know Rob Morrison personally and you can  rest assured he has a very high degree of integrity, is a huge supporter of all things Wellington, has a very restrained ego and certainly enjoys a bevvie ! The team he's assembled  has more business acumen than just about all other A league teams.

Additionally I know he has done this for all the right reasons and we could not have asked for a better outcome. He will be very success focused. Failure will not be an option. He is  a hardout rugby fan but I think he will contract yellow fever before too long !

I am predicting a golden era for the Nix starting next season after we get this challenging one over with

Remember the old "Morrison Golden Rotary lawnmower  ad ?"
How about a new chant on the terraces, lads ?

Fantastic result for the Phoenix. Im glad we can move on before the season kicks off. Better than going through this during the season (although im sure there will be other carry on with the change of ownership), but im sure that this positivity will have a follow through on the field, hopefully starting with tonight!

Made a fantastic day for me yesterday, some fantastic news and then my gig went well last night! haha

Excellent interview -the club does look to be in good hands!

and in light of other topic of *football* cf *soccer*

Welnix appear to be using "football" at a ratio of about 10:1 and only seem to use "soccer" if that is how the question is asked to them
