Happy with finally getting the license but this line bugs me. Along with not having home FFA Cup games, we continue being 2nd class citizens in the competition. Sure I'm happy we are still in it but if should be fair for all.

"There would be various strings attached, which dictate that the club have to continue meeting various agreed marks. Failure to do so would result in a swift review of their A-League status."

I think that was always going to be the case. Problem with the current situation is that the FFA seemed to spring all these #metrics at us out of nowhere. I'd assume this time that we'll have everything nailed down and know exactly where we stand. We are a unique case, I suppose, whether we like it or not. I'll take the 10 years, the rest can be worked through

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Is that 10 years ontop of the current 4 extention? Or 6 years ontop of the current 4 year agreement?.

You are right, but even Kiwi who live in Australia, let alone Wellington, are 2nd class Aussies.

However, the soap opera continues - would we have it any other way?

Now, a short term contract for my boy Aaron Clapham and all will be right with the world.

He probably took the ITK post that Patrick made the other day and turned it into his own story.

All the media including Simon Hampton and Piney are saying its a done deal so it must be really close.

Permalink Permalink

Piney has said that Hamish was the one that broke the story. So it seems like it was a little premature. But a bit like a premature announcement of a WeeMac signing I'm sure this story will come true.

More than a little premature, I'd say. There's a difference between "close to reaching a deal" and "set to get the licence extension". In my view, anyway.

Well the article went as far as saying that Gallop was supposed to fly out and announce it but put it off for two weeks for scheduling. So they must be confident that things can be worked through with a final face to face. That was pretty specific information.

I suspect/fear that the 'rigorous' Fairfax form of 'journalism' has used speculation on YF Forums as their source!

if they are, at least they are picking the positive posts rather than the negative posts previously.

I wouldn't be so sure, he's not going to make up dates about when Gallop is going to fly in for the signing. That information came from somewhere. And we've all given a fairfax journalist shark for writing an article about the nix - should be rewarding that sort of behaviour.

If true, I am sure that Gallop will have plenty of metrics and get our of jail cards up his sleeve for the journey.

I just hope that shortly after the license is announced, that the fine print is also disclosed.

Absolutely, since they said licencing would be an ongoing process.

I think the individual  "fine print" for Welnix as to the "having to keep our game up at all times" condition is nonsense. As we've seen in the past years a licence can be withdrawn from a club anytime FFA deems it necessary, rather than waiting for it to lapse and then just not renew it. It happened with NQ Fury and (unless I am wrong) Gold Coast Utd.  So I do not think our fine print will be any different to what it has been so far for us or others - but if it is, then it will have to do with money.

A new article on stuff with an interview with Dome, quite positive the deal could be done tomorrow or in the next two weeks, broadcast partners and nz football involved. Rob is going to do a media briefing tomorrow.

Two things have happened here in my opinion to actually help our cause:

1 - The proposing of the Cronulla Riots franchise as a possible replacement for the Phoenix has highlighted massive inadequacies in the way the FFA actually think. And the fact that the only clubs who didn't publicly support our plight were the ones who are currently being propped up by FFA cash just further proves that they are only concerned with winning battles and not the war.

2 - The timing of the Banned Supporters saga close after the announcement of the Wellington Phoenix Metrics in a way actually helped our cause somewhat as, I believe, it also showed that our crowds may not be the largest or loudest in the League but we are probably the most family friendly place to watch football!

A 10 Year License extension is now a realistic possibility but thinking back prior to these two events I didn't hold much hope I have to say.

Good on the paper I say for at least getting some news out of the club, we have been poorly served in that department

I get the feeling that all that talk about metrics/ongoing eligibility is just face saving talk for the FFA/Gallop, so they can say to opposers "well we did give them 10, but we made it clear that blah blah blah". I don't really believe that Morrison would sign up to a hand grenade that could just be pulled at any point without very good cause.

I agree - Welnix owners always had the option of walking away, since no amount of sentiment for the club is worth losing money short term expecting a decent financial outcome long term (10 years or more), if the regulatory regime is unpredictable. You need to be able to plan ahead with an amount of certainty that the goalposts are not going to be suddenly shifted, if you excuse the pun.

Interesting article up on Fox Sports from Simon Hill suggesting that one of our primary targets that must be met may be signing a reputable marquee.

WelNix have always said that the goal is for the team to be self sufficient, I don't think they are expecting a huge payout in ten years. I have ocassional business dealings with one of the less visible owners and when suggested that the Phoenix are philanthropic he agreed. Rob Morrison said in an interview that the goal of the Phoenix is to keep assets in Wellington and try and stop the Auckland drift.
