My guess is that this is the sticking point. The length of each term and the criteria behind the extensions. The FFA are just trying to pressure WelNix the only way they know how, through poorly thought out and inflammatory leaks.

I'd say Welnix would feel satisfied with a 4 + guaranteed extension that kicks in as soon as reasonable criteria is met, what we don't want is to be in the situation that we are in right now in 4 years. 3 year extensions are too short imo.

I'm in post-Carney depression and I almost just want WelNix to say 'f*ck off' and leave now.

Performance based 4 year license? No. Way.

I honestly can't see the A League lasting 10 years anyway unless there's major reform in the way it's governed. Time to start talking to the other owners about challenging the FFA's dictatorship. An independent governance structure with all stakeholders represented is needed to ensure that the interests of the competition are separated from the interests of the FFA. Obviously the interests aren't mutually exclusive but they aren't synonymous either.

Welnix should take the best they can get from the FFA regardless of how bad it is, then plot revolution. The FFA want to fudge us over, so we should fudge them over

I wouldn't be surprised if FFA was holding off the Cronulla Riots until a replacement for another floundering club is needed.

They hope to right their ship in 4 years from now and possibly see if they need us then.

With that lot in charge of HAL, i would say we have a long future ahead of us as we will be indispensable to HAL as the  only non-derby club apart from Perth and Adelaide left.

They should be aiming for 2 more clubs, not cutting off one of the few independent money sources in the game so they can have all Sydney derbies all the time.

Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, Kapiti Coast.

Let's leverage some derbies off our pre-existing metrics and engage with all those fans in the greater Wellington region we haven't been able to connect with.

Bossi has another go.

Sydney FC's chairman praised the FFA's decision to retain Wellington Phoenix in the A-League and withdraw their immediate interest in establishing a team in Sydney's southern suburbs.

As revealed by Fairfax Media on Monday, Wellington and the FFA are set to announce a minimum four-year licence extension in the A-League, which could be formally concluded as early as next week.

The two parties negotiated a deal that could amount to a total of 10 years, pending the club's commercial performance in a heavily incentivised structure.

While yet to be finalised, Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow welcomed the deal that's set to keep the Phoenix in the competition for the medium to long term as well as delay the introduction of a team in their core supporter base.

The St George, Sutherland and Wollongong regions account for approximately 25 per cent of the Sky Blues membership in what is the largest area of season ticket holders.

"My understanding is that a deal is yet to be reached between the FFA and Wellington but I'd certainly welcome a deal that saw Wellington remain in the competition long term," Barlow said.

"They're a very well run club financially, they're secure and they add a lot to the A-League and I know the other club chairmen share that view.

"From a South Sydney perspective, the region continues to be a vital and important one for Sydney FC and we'll do everything we can to ensure that remains the case long into the future."

The FFA are understood to be eager to introduce an A-League club in Sydney's south which boasts the largest number of registered football players in the country.

That won't likely occur for up to four years and pending the next broadcast deal. Stakeholders in the St George, Sutherland and Wollongong region may have been disappointed not to have been granted an A-League licence for next season but remain on-call for a future bid.

The local councils and football associations united to form a grassroots support base for an A-League club and said they will continue to support a team even if it won't likely enter the competition for up to four more seasons.

"We will continue to work with them to be part of the whole of football plan. I think it's a viable opportunity for the FFA to consider but that's the FFA's decision, they know their competition and what's affordable. We would be happy to help build a club from the grass roots level and up," Sutherland Shire FA general manager Jeff Stewart said.

The Phoenix came under criticism from many fans demanding to know the status of their licence application. Through a post on their Facebook page, Wellington Phoenix said a deal was yet to be finalised and ruled out publicly discussing licence talks.

"The negotiations for a license extension are continuing but the Wellington Phoenix have not and will not conduct these negotiations via the media," the post read.

Really have you seen some of the FB posts of people clearly getting frustrated with an issue that really has dragged out far to long.Does seem at times on here that you just cat offer any criticism of the Phoenix without someone becoming defensive.

For sure the FFA have been complete bastards but im not naive enough to think that our Welnix guys cant come in for some criticism over an issue that has just dragged on for far to long. For me despite the assurances from Ernie this has to be getting in to the players heads even if they wont admit it.

What are they supposed to say?

They can only say it hasn't been signed and are negotiating in good faith etc. - which they have done.

They could be like 'we are going to sign XYZ amazing player' but it doesn't eventuate to the frustration of fans, or just be 'we are interested in some players' and announce the signing when its completed - same situation.

The welnix group have shown seriously impressive levels of integrity in the way they've dealt with this whole thing.
To now get tripe like this, "nix coming under criticism" and whatnot, I mean jaysus, I don't know how welnix continue to keep a lid on things, they must be losing their sh*rk internally.

It really is a long constant kicking of testicles whilst lying on the floor, and they continue to take it with the most ridiculous amount of grace.

Absolute legends.

FYI - my exasperation was that "the Phoenix" have come under criticism (which they have, but no, bugger Facebook) with absolutely zero mention of any criticism (heaven forbid) of the golden goose that is the FFA.

I'm all for criticising of the Phoenix, I have done myself - but it would be nice if one these "repeaters not reporters" (to quote myself lol) such as Bossi and his mates provided some semblance of balance in their articles.

I know, I know...

So what should the Welnix do?

Do you want them to negotiate through bitching in the media?  Like the PFS vs FFA negotiations which was a shark storm?

Or would you rather they told us something like they are on the verge of the 10 year agreement, they just need to dot the i's and cross the t's and then have to eat their words when the FFA changes their minds?

Both of those options sound like bad ideas, and were bad ideas when they happened.  Personally Id rather they complete the deal or get it very close before they tell us.

The reality is right now the reason a deal hasn't been completed is the FFA.  If the FFA just treated us like any other club, the deal would have been completed 12 months ago, no issues.

The reality is the Welnix are having to try to figure out if the FFA's demands are feasible, and if not try and make the FFA budge,

So in what way are the Welnix open to criticism?  because the FFA havent given them enough power?  because the FFA is being unrealistic? Or for not making optimistic comments to the press knowing the FFA could screw them over?

Let's not forget that there is some history with Welnix either speaking with forked tongue or being economical with the truth, so let's not be too quick to judge people's unease with the situation. I also have no problem with how the media have been reporting this imminent license extension; that Bossi report threw in enough quotes and stuff to make it a legitimate 'story'. People are being far too precious.

So you have no problem that a Wellington reporter published a story saying we had a licence, then had to back track and edit the story once he bothered to check with the Phoenix?

Not particularly, its not exactly life or death is it?
