Welnix should hook up some of those Syrian refugees moving to Wellington with free Nix tickets. They like their football and have big families. Get them involved early and you will create a whole generation of life long fans.

This is already happening.

Great idea. Well done to those who thought of it and are putting it in place.

Would be cool to hear some more about whether they are going to come, how many tickets were given out etc. Wonder if there will be any media attention.

Either way there are 600 + Syrians coming to Wellington over the next few years, they like football and come from a country where they aren't biased towards EPL or other Euro leagues (A lot of British migrants). Good chance to convert them now before they isolate themselves. The knock on affects of there participation could be huge for the community. From English language immersion, to employment opportunities and their children playing club football.

One family had 10 children, if just the dad went in the family with half those kids to a game it would pump up the metrics. Not to mention many of the refugees will bring their parents, brothers, sisters etc over. A lot of our population growth in NZ is migration, if the Phoenix want to hit their ten year targets it may involve grabbing every opportunity they can get.

May also pay to keep in mind they probably won't discover the Phoenix themselves, they won't have pay TV, language skills or the financial resources/awareness to make games.

And if Dad does not have to work two jobs, he may even have time to help with coaching at his kids local school, which helps with a sense of community and belonging. Speaking from experience.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Now that the Welnix have an extended A league contract is it time for someone else to buy the club? The "who" would always be the big question. The point is that the Welnix would be happy to break even for the next ten years with steady as she goes management. Whereas the franchise needs to be grown. Are the Welnix the organisation to do this? Do they have a win the league mentality?

I have acquaintances with one of the less visible members of Welnix professionally and he considers it a philanthropic endeavor. If you also listen to the interviews that Rob Morrison has done over the last six months they aren't doing this to make a profit or even to break even necessarily - although that is the goal, they see the Nix as an important asset for Wellington. I'm sure that they will sell if the right offer is made, accompanied by some guaranties. But don't underestimate their desire to invest in the club if they think its worthwhile. Their goals are to win the competition regularly, and to use the clubs success to build other assets for Wellington.

They seem to be a helluva lot better than a one man model such as we have seen struggle in the past.

They seem to be a helluva lot better than a one man model such as we have seen struggle in the past.

With Welnix or a similar consortium model there is always the need to achieve a sensible consensus.

With a one-man-band, you always run a risk of ending up with a Tinkler (Jets) or Palmer (GCU) style decision-making.

Beggars can't be choosers.

But if I could choose, I'd choose Welnix.

The Qataris who own Paris St Germain are reportedly buying a minority stake in Beckham's new Miami MLS franchise. Maybe they want to pump some money into the Nix and join the WelNix consortium too. Then we can do a Melbourne City and get PSG to buy players off other A League clubs then loan them back to us.

I'd take Zlatan as a marquee too ;)

The old Phoenix entity is being wound up still owing 1.9 million.

Hopefully he can give them something back if he gets back on his feet.

That's not how it works.

Hey. I just wanted you to know that you can't just say the word "bankruptcy" and expect anything to happen.

Speaking on World of Football earlier tonight, Gallop said a promotion/relegation structure was not viable.

“At the moment with the investment our owners make to the competition, it’s not realistic to move to a promotion and relegation system. We want those investors to know that they’ve got some longevity with their licence,” Gallop said.

What winning/success does for a community -

According to the Sky commentator on this a.m.'s Chelsea v PSG game Paris now has more registered footballers than any other city in the world bar Sao Paulo.

I wonder what it did to basketball player numbers on North Shore after the Breakers won the ANBL title a couple of times.

Why the Shore? I'm not a big b-ball follower but I thought the Breakers also played in Kohimarama.

Don't they play most of their games over on the shore and the finals at vector?

I hope you are right Ryan - but I guess they need to buy and retain quality players to be successful, and that will cost.

So many contradictory statements in this. Made me laugh, thanks
