"Piney : Is the Phoenix licence for sale

Morrison : errrrrrrrrr.........................no is the easy answer

Newspaper headlines a couple of days later : FFA reject $15m Phoenix licence sale"

I pointed out until I'm blue in the face, but I'll do it again:

- that newspaper headline was an unsourced rumour. It didn't even say where the journo's facts were coming from. If it had said "sources close to FFA/the Nix/the Campbelltown FC told us" I would give it some credibility. If it had said "we approached the Nix for comment but got none", again it would have some credibility. But it did not, and it cited no sources, so I give it none.

Why do you believe it? Just because it was in an Aussie paper? It may still be true but it's certainly not evidence that Rob was lying to Piney's face.

They may not have lied, but there's clearly things going on behind the scenes.  They tweeted they hadn't received a call or email from South Sydney but then met them face to face.  The fact there are meetings going on says something is happening

Think some here should reverse the roles to apply some common sense

Let's say nz football invited a team from Vanuatu into our local premiership football league.

Gave them some coin each year as part of the deal

Then they were key players in trying to stop NZ football being involved in their own league

Then with a couple of years going on their license they tried to make some coin and flick it to the Levin Tigers for 15 million quid

You would be kind of pissed wouldn't you?

well to be accurate, nzf would not  want the Vanuatu team and say they are squatting on the licence and create conditions for its eventual death where they can take back the licence and on sell it for millions while the Vanuatu owners are millions out of pocket. Nzf would not be pissed at all, rather thankful that they were able to have a league of 8, then 10, then 12 teams with the owners of the Vanuatu team propping up their club so that nzf can profit on the tv deal to spend on their salaries, consultants and the nz game.

Ok, if you put it like that

Squatters trying to then sell the house for 15 million

useless bit of info that's completely off topic, but NZF did consider reasonably seriously a proposal in the 90s that would have seen a Fiji team playing in the National League!

These owners took over from Terry in 2011, 7 years ago

In an interview with one of the owners he stated that in the year they took over from Terry, they had a 2 million dollar loss

Thereafter $1 million and this was expected to reduce

The sale price the other day was  NZ$16.3 million

The maths demonstrates a nice profit if it had gone through

also I thought the whole point behind the Auckland games was to ensure enough income to break even for the season as the sponsor would give them more when they played those games

sorry guys what ever ways you crunch the numbers if the corporate raiders after asset stripping had got 15 million, they would have made money on their investment

Never mind all the business deals made inviting clients to the games

What asset stripping? Haven’t they added a big asset to the club by setting up the Academy at a heavy cost.

Did they have to pay Terry S or FFA anything when acquiring the licence?

See my last post above Coochie, that is from the owners mouth and those numbers don't lie

conservatiavely 6 x 1 = 6 + 2 = 8

16.3 - 8 = $8.3 million

That's decent coin if the deal had been approved

Have you seen the sale document and you can confirm the $15 million AuD was in it.

Really is tiresome some of the BS that is being posted. People having a crack at the media but some of the garbage some are posting can't be doing any thing for the confidence of the casual visitor. Hope the Welnix guys don't visit the forums. Because if they do they must be asking why they bother if the so called fan base speculate so widely on things.

The owners are big enough and old enough to know what this forum is and what to expect - glad to see the Sydney tweet... suggests some of the reporting may be inaccurate.

I do feel a little for the owners - heaps of conjecture flying around, very little of it apparently on point and clearly they have struggled to hire someone that they feel confident in to solve the problems of the last few years.

Sadly, everytime Dome speaks, something in the news comes out two days later questioning his integrity - whilst I think he is apt at wordsmithing, these stories probably have created an image that is not fair.

That been said - name the manager and sign someone!!

Look at it this way: the word going around last week was "the Nix are doing deals with South Melbourne / the Brisbane Strikers"

People yelled WHY AREN'T THE NIX DENYING THIS, IT MUST BE TRUE

The Nix came out and denied in on Saturday

Then the "$15 million SW Sydney" story started circulating

People yelled WHY AREN'T THE NIX DENYING THIS, IT MUST BE TRUE

At this point, I honestly reckon Welnix said "fudge it, every time we stamp down on a story another one pops up, let's leave it"

...

That said, the people here wouldn't be so keen to believe these stories if Welnix had given us more confidence with their other decision-making :-/

Huge assumption that they lost a consistent amount every year. Almost certainly a massively incorrect assumption as well given the nature of a football club - predictions about financial results in the media absolutely do lie, especially when they are only predictions.

HOW THE CURRENT PHOENIX SAGA HAS UNFOLDED

March 28: Football Federation Australia calls for expressions of interest from parties wishing to join the A-League, with two teams set to be added ahead of the 2019-20 season.

April 3: A-League boss Greg O'Rourke tells AAP the Phoenix are short of the metrics they need to hit in order to trigger a three-year licence extension in 2020:

April 14: The Phoenix finish the 2017-18 A-League season with a 2-1 win over Melbourne City in Auckland.

April 22: The Sunday Herald Sun reports the Phoenix are "exploring the option of selling at least a partial stake to one of the expansion hopefuls," claiming they've had talks with two expansion bids in recent days, one of which was believed to be South West Sydney.

April 24: The Phoenix issue a statement with the key line: "We will not be making any decision on the future of this club until the future of the A-League is clearer which may not be for some time".

April 24: Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison grants an interview toRadio Sport. He confirms the Phoenix have talked to parties interested in joining the A-League. He is asked: "Are you interested in selling the A-League licence you hold?" and says: "No, is the simple answer. There's not a lot of sense in us selling the licence". The possibility of a merger of some description is left on the table.

April 25: A report in the Sydney Morning Herald offers one bit of new information: South Melbourne officials have reached out to the Phoenix again that week.

April 25: The Herald Sun follows up its original report, saying the Phoenix "have failed to dispel speculation that their A-League licence is up for sale". The fresh report focuses on ongoing negotiations between the Phoenix and the South West Sydney bid.

April 27: The World Game reports that the Brisbane Strikers, an existing club bidding to join the A-League, are interested in buying the Phoenix's licence. Chairman Bruce Atterton-Evans claims "talks are ongoing," between the Strikers and the Phoenix. The report also includes fresh quotes from South Melbourne bid chairman Bill Papastergiadis, who claims Morrison and Dome met them in Melbourne in 2017 offering to sell 25 per cent of the club for $1.6 million.

April 27: The Phoenix issue a statement, dismissing the Strikers' claim as "pure fairytale stuff". They also responds to the South Melbourne claims: "The only meeting the Phoenix had in Melbourne, with South Melbourne, took place in June 2016 and that was in response to an approach from South Melbourne to the Wellington Phoenix. There has been no contact since August 2016 , apart from an email from South Melbourne three days ago which the Phoenix have not replied to".

May 7: Dome tells Stuff the reports out of Australia were part of an FFA strategy to deflect attention from their own issues.

May 9: Midfielder Matt Ridenton leaves the Phoenix after five years, signing with the Newcastle Jets. The next day he tells Stuff the uncertainty surrounding the club was a factor in his departure.

May 11: The Herald Sun reports that a memorandum of understanding has been agreed between the Phoenix and South West Sydney, with a 50 per cent stake in the club to be sold immediately. "A large portion" of home games would be played in Sydney, and the existing contracts of 10 Phoenix players would be honoured.

May 11: FFA chief executive David Gallop confirms he met with Morrison and Marra that day, and issues a statement to AAP.

May 11:The Phoenix tweet that they "once again will refuse to speculate on speculation".

May 12: The Phoenix issue a statement. It contains no mention of South West Sydney, but says "there are currently potential options that are worth exploring," while repeating Morrison's claim that "the club is not looking to sell its licence".

May 15: The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the FFA is set to reject a $16.3m sale of the Phoenix to the South-West Sydney bid, in order to "[maintain] the integrity of its current expansion process".

A horses mouth told me today that there was no offer to sell, no offer accepted and the FFA announced they rejected an offer that didn't exist in the first place because it makes them look  strong and Wellington look like the bad boys.

Me thinks that because the Nix have stood up to these bullies by announcing where they stand and want he clubs to run the competition and NO FFA involvement, that the FFA are really going full on to discredit the Nix.

I just hope the club gets a good lawyer and sues the arse off the FFA and it's leaders and Fox Sport too for promoting the BS rumours. Is there no level that these cretins will stoop to?

Who has the most to gain by putting a $15 million price tag on a 2 year licence for the A-League. With 2 new entrants to be picked from 12 is it now

No, it would not be *******

Would be great if the pod team could also have a media release ready to go when you put the next podcast up. Basically a summary of what Rob told you, and your thoughts as die-hard fans and YF stalwarts. That makes it easier for the media to get the facts right, rather than rely on them to actually listen to the podcast.

I think it'd be very strange for a podcast to release a media release on someone else's behalf.

But yes we will chat about what was discussed with Rob in some detail. Ideally we'd be able to record sooner but life sometimes gets in the way. I might try and jot some of just my perspective of the chat into a blog post tonight instead to tide people over.

If this is true then surely the A-League Club ownership group would be livid?

I would imagine that some persons involved in Australia would be very close to bordering on criminal slander by endorsing or encouraging such behaviours. That nothing was ever on the table and for a certain person to speak out and say that they would block said deal suggests to me that they are involved in "fake news" creation and for what reasons. The sooner someone does to one, what the NRL did , the better.... If the FFA want to regain any credibility.
