Having read that email sent yesterday I get the feeling that they are going to take the 4 years.

Excellent read.

I hope so. I think the FFA giving us a 10 year license right now is too big a back-track to expect from them. However, I think Welnix could now agree a 4 year extension on much more agreeable terms than just "and after 4 yrs we'll kick you out".

By "more agreeable terms" I think Welnix will want to take away as much uncertainty as possible. That means getting the FFA to be absolutely clear about what metrics they actually care about and where they expect those to get to. I would argue that crouds and memberships shouldn't actually be on the table, or at the very least they should only be given a low weighting. TV ratings should also be pegged to the overall league ratings somehow and need to recognise that the Nix will always be a bit less fashionable but their main job is to provide content that doesn't turn people off, even if it doesn't exactly turn them on. I also think Welnix should get agreement that as soon as certain really key metrics are met it triggers an automatic extension - no need to even go back to FFA.

I think the massive push-back on the South Sydney option is great for us - it makes the FFA's Plan B more questionable, which forces the discussion back to whether the Nix themselves are an asset or a liability. The argument that they are a liability is piss-weak. They may not be the biggest asset but that's OK, every league needs a few teams like that just to have a solid, sustainable league.

The only way you could possibly call the Nix a liability is if you very specifically frame the question in terms of maximising the potential amount of TV money that the broadcaster is willing to pay, and that is driven by ratings.

...

Their attack on the Nix is an ill-conceived, slightly desperate, knee-jerk reaction by them to an overall ratings plunge in the league, which the FFA themselves are accountable for and which they don't seem to know what to do about.

The good news is that quite a few people, including club owners and media, seem to have seen straight through this. The FFA won't back down completely but I'm hopeful that Welnix may now be able to take up a 4 year extension on much more agreeable terms if they are also willing to compromise.

I think, after the flurry of opinions, articles, blogs etc., that this is one part of the equation, with the other being the entry of the third Sydney team at the expense of the Nix  - which means that the FFA doesn't have to change it's cost structure until the new TV deal with Fox is renegotiated.

As everyone has noted - massively short-term in thinking and as you have pointed out, extremely tenuous logic to cover over incompetency/dishonesty.

But when you call out a bully for being a liar and a scumbag, but can't actually do anything to nullify the bully, it would take a complete change of thinking on the bully's part to back down.

4/5 more years seems likely but will be a pretty strained relationship from here on in.

Fine but would be better if she put her bum on seat at the stadium on a regular basis instead of waiting till things get desperate and or  its a finals game.

You know what it took to make me a Nix fan after a couple of years occasionally glancing to see if it had gone bust yet? 6-0 over Cold Ghost. What if the lads could do that against the Cakes next week. With 15,000+ in the stands.

The FFA are totally taking the piss with this "prove you're not a liability" line.

The Nix are not a liability to the FFA in just about any commonly understood sense of the term. The club operates at close to break even and any losses are covered by the owners. The money that the FFA pays the Nix is not a donation or subsidy to football in NZ - this a myth that needs to be dispelled. It is exactly the same amount they pay all the other clubs and it buys them exactly the same thing - a squad of 23 players who play at least 27 games a season on the telly. The Nix get a 10% share of the TV money (that the FFA allocate to A-League clubs) and they provide 10% of the content. They also provide that content at much lower risk to the FFA than many other clubs.

The only way you could possibly call the Nix a liability is if you very specifically frame the question in terms of maximising the potential amount of TV money that the broadcaster is willing to pay, and that is driven by ratings. It's true that the Nix ratings are not the highest but they are also no lower than a few other clubs. Also, if you replace the Nix with another club it has to rate higher than the Nix and that's not a given. The FFA seems to think that derbies rate higher so is looking at an extra Sydney team, but that would mean going from 3 Sydney derbies a season to 9. It could actually dilute the interest in derbies (there would be a derby every 3 weeks) leaving them back at square one, or worse. A more sensible strategy would be to go back to the content part of the equation and expand the league. More clubs = more games = more content.

100% this

Probably the best summary of what the real truth is regarding this issue. There is so much misinformation coming out of FFA. Morrison said in a recent interview with 442?? that he just wanted the Nix to be treated just like every club in the A-league. Well thats not happening. The FFA are so inconsistent in their attack on the Nix. If they applied the same criteria on the Mariners then they should probably be kicked out too.

The low SkyTV money is a red herring. No other club bring a single cent in extra TV money except for the Nix. If a Sydney club replaces the Nix then they will not bring in a extra cent of TV money. THe A-league will in fact lose TV money as Sky won't cover the A-League without the Nix in it.

The crouds numbers are more a concern for the club not the FFA as they don't get the money. In fact we are 9th average croud but only 900 seperates us and the next 3 clubs above us...its not really a big deal.

Personally I think the FFA just don't want us in the A-League and are putting up false arguements to justify their case.

This was the nix' cock up. If it did get the green light it would have also been another bargaining chip for the club earlier on for a license extension.

And if we were the South Sydney Phoenix, we would be treated the same as the other 9 clubs. That's it. They would prefer not to have a Kiwi team at all, but they're kind of stuck with us for 4 years. We will always have to be twice as good as any other club to be treated the same. It's as if we were the only woman in a 10-person office.

Except the Nix wouldn't go ahead with a stadium unless there was assurance from the FFA re a suitable time frame to justify the expense.

iirc a 10 year licence was actually a condition attached to the stadium being built.

This is what annoys me the most. I can fully understand if the FFA consider our crouds and viewer numbers not enough to justify a 10 year license, but they aren't significantly worse (and better in a couple of cases) of other teams in the league, yet they are enough to justify a 20 year license? Absolutely zero consistency

To me, FFA already made this decision about a year ago. All they are trying to do now is convince the rest of the league.

I don't see them changing their mind.

Has WelNix ever tried working directly with WCC over a new stadium solution (such as a boutique venue adjacent to the Cake Tin)? WelNix seemed to have a very antagonistic relationship with the Hutt Council over Petone Rec, but CWB seems far more sympathetic to the Phoenix cause.

As I just argued in the other thread about 'realistic options', perhaps one way out of this mess is to go back to FFA with a business case that includes a commitment to a new stadium at some point down the line.

iirc welnix approached the hutt city council about building a dedicated training facility and the hutt councils venue management division suggested the whole stadium thing, it ballooned from there. So it was the hutt that actually suggested the stadium.

It's been less than a week, some people haven't been paid yet, or may not have the money available on such short notice.

Give it a couple weeks before you judge people for not buying something.

Also why would they buy when there has been no statement from WelNix too. I think you'll see a big croud at next game and more membership sold. In four days I think 288 is good!

Any membership sales after season starts is good. Don't know why you expected people to buy during all the news and chaos. They would of had no idea what outcome for the Nix would have been and it wasn't until like Wednesday that the push to actually buy a membership to help the Nix happen. The first couple of days was actually about WelNix even possibly walking away.

There's literally nowhere to put it. The WCC can't even find place for a concert venue that's better than TSB Arena, let alone a full blown stadium.
