Big deal? Only 288 people came out and brought memberships = pathetic. Petition wont save us nor will 3900 memberships.

It's nice to know people care for some of us.
What are you saying will save us?

I think amongst the chaos and now with dust settling only having 290 people sign up for membership out of pity really reflects on where we are and who we are in the A-League.

Royz - Have you got a membership?

Yes have you? Or are you squatting?.

Its not as there are that many other teams they are likely to move.

Im with you actually DM there are places where something could be done.Whats lacking is the willingness to do something. Someone get hold of Fran and see if she wants to head the campaign for a boutique  stadium.

Oh damn, with boutique in the name Surely Mirimar or Island Bay would make space.

I'd still like to dream of a Petone option - reclaim some land from the harbour right by the motorway there and build a modern, fully enclosed 15,000 seat stadium with all the function centre-crap they attach to these things. Make it a hippy stadium with the latest green tech and use it as an example of how progressive the Hutt is...  blah blah flagship project... blah blah. Maybe you could even build apartments into the complex to sell off or lease out to recoup some costs.

No houses down that end of Petone so no NIMBYs.

I'll concede that it would cost a shark ton of money but it could bring all sorts of revenue streams - if it was fully enclosed it would be a great concert venue for the region too.

Petone is not her town. You want her to have supported the Nix moving from her town to a neighbour?

Fair enough - wasn't aware. Forgot how the councils are structured in the Welly region.

Has WelNix ever tried working directly with WCC over a new stadium solution (such as a boutique venue adjacent to the Cake Tin)? WelNix seemed to have a very antagonistic relationship with the Hutt Council over Petone Rec, but CWB seems far more sympathetic to the Phoenix cause.

As I just argued in the other thread about 'realistic options', perhaps one way out of this mess is to go back to FFA with a business case that includes a commitment to a new stadium at some point down the line.

There's literally nowhere to put it. The WCC can't even find place for a concert venue that's better than TSB Arena, let alone a full blown stadium.

What about immediately north of the Cake Tin for the rectangular stadium?

As for the concert venue, maybe it's time to resurrect this design for the indoor sports centre (which ended up going to Kilbirnie):

If you put all the pieces together it could be a whole sports and entertainment precinct.

I agree with Ballane that political will is the real issue here. But I certainly wouldn't write off CWB getting involved if WelNix make an approach.

I think we need to show our fellow supporters groups and teams a bit of respect. I know we like to call them the tards and RBB criminals etc but they seem to have our backs right now. It just does not feel right calling Kosta a Tard of Smeltzy Blimg when they are rooting for us.

I read somewhere else that NIB stadium should be renamed the Glory hole. Sage came out mid week and said our shark don't stink so no, I won't call it the Glory hole. I choose to show others some respect that they are giving to us.

Honestly, I think the Bling/Tards/Criminals/Glory hole stuff is all just banter and that fans of those clubs know there's no real antagonism between us and them. They can keep calling us sheep shaggers or whatever too. That's part of supporting different clubs - you give the other supporters shark.

It has been great how much other supporters in the A League have been behind us, and I think we should make it clear how appreciative we are of that - but we can do that while still keeping that friendly rivalry and childish name-calling going.

At least, that's how I see it.

We have, prior to this weekends game, issued a statement to all a-league clubs, fan groups and media thanking them for their support.

It's on the YF page somewhere and also our Twitter and FB.

This weekend has really shown us just how much the fans do love us though and we need to make sure they know we appreciate it.

To be fair I've only ever been to one Nix game but that might be due to having lived off-shore since halfway through A-League season two.

The FFA are totally taking the piss with this "prove you're not a liability" line.

The Nix are not a liability to the FFA in just about any commonly understood sense of the term. The club operates at close to break even and any losses are covered by the owners. The money that the FFA pays the Nix is not a donation or subsidy to football in NZ - this a myth that needs to be dispelled. It is exactly the same amount they pay all the other clubs and it buys them exactly the same thing - a squad of 23 players who play at least 27 games a season on the telly. The Nix get a 10% share of the TV money (that the FFA allocate to A-League clubs) and they provide 10% of the content. They also provide that content at much lower risk to the FFA than many other clubs.

The only way you could possibly call the Nix a liability is if you very specifically frame the question in terms of maximising the potential amount of TV money that the broadcaster is willing to pay, and that is driven by ratings. It's true that the Nix ratings are not the highest but they are also no lower than a few other clubs. Also, if you replace the Nix with another club it has to rate higher than the Nix and that's not a given. The FFA seems to think that derbies rate higher so is looking at an extra Sydney team, but that would mean going from 3 Sydney derbies a season to 9. It could actually dilute the interest in derbies (there would be a derby every 3 weeks) leaving them back at square one, or worse. A more sensible strategy would be to go back to the content part of the equation and expand the league. More clubs = more games = more content.

Their attack on the Nix is an ill-conceived, slightly desperate, knee-jerk reaction by them to an overall ratings plunge in the league, which the FFA themselves are accountable for and which they don't seem to know what to do about.

The good news is that quite a few people, including club owners and media, seem to have seen straight through this. The FFA won't back down completely but I'm hopeful that Welnix may now be able to take up a 4 year extension on much more agreeable terms if they are also willing to compromise.

100% this

Probably the best summary of what the real truth is regarding this issue. There is so much misinformation coming out of FFA. Morrison said in a recent interview with 442?? that he just wanted the Nix to be treated just like every club in the A-league. Well thats not happening. The FFA are so inconsistent in their attack on the Nix. If they applied the same criteria on the Mariners then they should probably be kicked out too.

The low SkyTV money is a red herring. No other club bring a single cent in extra TV money except for the Nix. If a Sydney club replaces the Nix then they will not bring in a extra cent of TV money. THe A-league will in fact lose TV money as Sky won't cover the A-League without the Nix in it.

The crouds numbers are more a concern for the club not the FFA as they don't get the money. In fact we are 9th average croud but only 900 seperates us and the next 3 clubs above us...its not really a big deal.

Personally I think the FFA just don't want us in the A-League and are putting up false arguements to justify their case.

One cost that would drop significantly for the comp sans us would be airfares. Be a lot cheaper for the comp and could see a saving in excess of what pittance Sky contributes.

Ive been meaning to share my personal story for a little while but probably now is a better time than any..

I grew up in the city of Sheffield to a house full of Sheffield Wednesday supporters. In the mid 90's Wednesday were the pride of the city playing in the Premiership at the historic Hillsborough with the lines of Benito Carbone and Paolo Di Canio on their books.

However as some of you would know their are two pro clubs in Sheffield, the other being Sheffield United who at that point of time were struggling to make a blip on the radar or compete with the fanfare of Wednesday. Anyways around 1997 Sheffield united started sending a couple of players to 1 school a week before home games. Not just to talk about football and promote Sheffield United but to give away 500 double passes (1 adult ticket and 1 child ticket) for free to the school - so 1000 tickets in total. I was fortunate to be able to get 1 of the double passes and went to watch Sheffield United play and was instantly hooked.

From then on any pocket money, birthday cash, xmas cas etc went on buying tickets to watch Sheffield United. During that season it was interesting to watch the croud grow slowly each week as about 5-10% of the kids who got free tickets from each previous school continued to attend games while 1000 new attendees came along. From then on in the football started to improve with a lively croud behind them and Sheffield United made it into the premiership.

Now almost 20 years on Sheffield United still get over 20,000 supporters to their home games as those kids have grown up and still continued to support the team depsite being in League 1 (2 leagues down from the Premiership) - including myself!

I wonder if the Phoenix could do something like this, obviously its not going to bring in any money but I dont think thats the aim right now. Any supporters who have already paid for season tickets my see it as being unfair on them but as they say the cause is greater than the effect and hopefully should be pretty understanding all things considered

so if I'm understanding Gallops main issue with us correctly - we are "squatting" ie freeloading and costing the FFA nd giving nothing back. My response is two fold - if the nix go, what TV coverage in NZ does he expect, the pittance from Sky becomes zero! Secondly what is NZF doing to actually help in this scenario? are they offering to pay for the nix ie the players wage and taking the cost awy from the FFA, are they pushing hard to make NZ part of Asia, thereby removing the pressure on the FFA from AFC - no they are not, they are weakly "supporting the nix" by pissy little tweets and FB posts.

I would totally oppose NZF doing that. It is not their responsibility. I know there are benefits to NZ football in general through playing in the A League but FFA benefit just as much if not more - even if they don't realise it.
