TBH, I can't recall seeing any NZFC players this year that immediately strikes me as A League quality. Admittedly I've seen everyone only once except Waikato [who I haven't seen] and HB who I've seen a lot of.

I'm going to go ahead and say that the current form of NQF isn't indicative of what a A-league franchise should be like.

+1. I will tell you now, a Waitakere team filled with players below A-League standard, would not beat North Queensland Fury. If they were that good then why are these guys working in NZ and playing amateur football.

Guys - can anyone tell me who has done well for the reserves in their fixtures this season (rather than these stupid hypothetical debates about Waitak vs the Fury - go and play it on PS3 and see who wins there)

So a couple of weeks before Waitak played in the CWC, they took on the nix.  Yet none of their players were trying to impress the coach so they could make the trip?

james dean is right. Will it be better if these kids play in their age group leagues? For example, strengthen the local age group leagues so these kids can play throughout winter months. Pitting these kids against the nzfc teams is really not treating the nzfc teams with respect. Of course, those cellar dwellers in nzfc need to spruce up and show respect to the league for a start and not treat the nzfc league as a social kickaround league. This may be the real reason why spectator support at these games have been so poor! Lack of quality and excitement.

Aaah, no, that's not really what I am saying at all.

What I am saying if you're good supposedly enough to play for the phoenix in the future at 16/17 you should be able to play NZFC.  But if we're not going to stop players playing NZFC for their home clubs then are we in fact getting the best players at the phoenix youth?  I.e. if there are better 16 year olds at Auckland City then what is the point of all of this??  At 16 you should be training and playing with men in NZ - it's not ideal but it's the reality, if you're still playing with school boys then you're going to struggle to maker it to the pro leagues at 18 and you'll be too far behind the 8 ball.  That's my opinion anyway...

Actually Normo, most of the lads in the Phoenix reserves are NZFC starters.  They were playing midweek for the Phoenix and then connecting back with NZFC sides and generally playing in those sides at the weekends.

Zane Sole and Ashton Pett for example trained with the reserves all week, played for the reserves in Dunedin then turned out for Waitakere against Team Wellington or did I misinterpret what you were trying to say?

Don't worry about ted.  There is not one shred of evidence to backup his view yet plenty to back up the reality.  'tis the way of the knitting circle.  The first thing you learn to knit is this  (sorry about  the size):

Cab we dare hope see one of those great footballing sides representing NZ and Oceania in the CWC again?

Don't recall them doing so in the last edition of that tournament...maybe it's now too small for them so these great footballing sides don't want to bother with it anymore?

HN - thanks for answering my question, that's what I wanted to know yes.  Not sure it's the ideal model but time will tell.  I would prefer that than having second rate guys playing for the Phoenix.  I am very interested in this youth team because I think it has real possibility - we have the pick of 5 million people and a decent amount of athletic young kids.  I think if it's done right we could have a great production line of talent (and it could end up paying for the club in the future in transfer fees) - I just think it has to start younger and for there to be a real genuine pathway to the first team.  That also means the first team coaching staff have to be prepared to play these guys when they are ready no matter what age they are at, and keep bringing them through!

Interestingly enough Alex Solomons was with the Yoof from East Coast bays and Team Wellington needed Centre-Back cover and signed him so it's helping them find a place at the higher level if they don't already have one as well.

That's good too, I think it will certainly need co-operation from the NZFC sides for it to work well

It certainly has that from most of the coaches I've spoken to.  As I said Neil Emblen before they played here said to me that it wasn't great having Sole and Pett away but the oppostunity for them to be involved was great he'd never suggest they avoid it.

A youth team was one of the things mentioned by the new owners in their first press conference, despite not really being football people they are already aware of the potential of earnings from transfer fees as a revenue stream for the club?

Only a handful of SENIOR a-league players have been sold to other clubs.  Can't see a youth team players getting picked up overseas and receiving a transfer fee for it.

i think hes meaning potential youth players could mature into sellable senior players - assume in the way langarak, leckie, Kruse, Oar, and probably rojas were sold.
Not that they all came from reserves, but thats what i think

Any idea when we will hear about the Reserve team, I thought something might have come out last week.  Do reserve teams get paid or are the essentially still amateaurs?
